No it wasn't. Not even that close. The 1st set was 6-1! Nothing 'wonderful' about such a one-sided set. Gauff fell apart in the 2nd after they closed the roof. Fairly middling match over all.

If you think giving Saba 20 free points on DF and still drawing even in the third set is not impressive, you're just a Coco hater. Notice how when anybody else gets an easy draw no one makes a big deal. BTW Saba won AO without playing any top ten players until she met Coco in the Semifinals. Such a big improvement on the first serve and return! The depth on her shots has definitely improved in particular from the return of service. Overall great performance. Ultimately nerves were the deciding factor. Maybe a wildcard in Japan before the Finals and she’s got a great chance at taking it home. Keep up the good work @cocogauff!

Because her game was very one dimensional when she first came on tour-just trying to blast winner off both wings like Madi Keys does, and her serve was SUPER inconsistent-double faulting as much as Coco is now. She learned variety like slicing and even volleying(doubles helped with this), fine tuned that serve and worked on her mental game and now she’s soon to be World #1

I think this more tennis evolved version of Gauff will garner not only attention...but worry from the others that felt they were superior to her. Napisałem o tym w komentarzu, mającym dziesiątki aplauzów). I po meczu Coco - Sabalenka, to samo widzę. W 1 secie tenisowa wzajemna kultura, a w drugim, nasilają się wrzaski Białorusinki, i mimo prowadzenia w tym secie, ulega. A w trzecim, to już wrzaski Sabalenki, które i słonicę mogą zwalić z nóg. Funny how when Iga or Sabalenka loses, no one makes excuses for them.... probably because they don't lose as often. I like Coco but her game needs improvement, not excuses. Coco needs a service coach. She keeps dropping her left arm before impact; hence the net welcomes the ball. Gauff gave that match to Sabalenka. Coco had some truly amazing shots though. It was riveting tennis when they were both slamming it.

Coco's serve betrayed her. It got in her head and just kept going. It was fitting in a way that the match ended on a double fault. Every other aspect of her game was amazing. She's so much more improved in her groundstrokes. Even her forehand is now a real weapon. Usually her serves are too. It's a shame she couldn't put it all together. But that's what it takes to defeat Sabalenka, whose ball stiking is second to none on the women's tour. Congrats to both players for an amazing effort and match!

Gauff was incredible. Only an extremely willed player with very strong physique like Sabalenka could have beaten her. Gauff has produced some of the best movements on court carving out winners. Simple out of this world. How Sabalenka stayed strong speaks about her mental strength more than anything. Any other player would have buckled up against such stroke play.

The majority commenting don't have a clue as to what it takes to perform at the professional level..Being critical of any pro athlete when you can't even make a soft ball team is offensive! Losing matches and games whatever the sport is part of competition! The most prolific athletes lose matches and games! Gauff is 20yrs old and still learning her craft! She's definitely not the most skilled athlete on the Tour and will lose more matches in the future! To reach the semifinals of a world class tournament is no easy feat for any athlete! The seeded players one through ten will face aggressive competition as everyone's clamoring for points to move up in the standings..Nobody's going to give any quarter to their opponents..They've to take it! There's no vast difference in talent with the players seeded one through five! The difference comes in the mentality and who flinch first loses! Double faults is on the stat sheet and a part of the game..Same as scoring against yourself which the opposition gets! Another thing Gauff have to work on! She's not where she needs to be to keep her composure mentally in close matches! Losing matches against the top players is her learning curve to get there!

Double faults are not a matter of serving technique but rather of pressure & the temprament to handle it. Even Sabelenka had trouble holding her service game & was broken multiple times. However champions know how to win even when they aren't playing their best. With maturity Coco will get there as well. Her court coverage is her biggest asset so far.

You must be out of your mind or you have never watched a good match. She hit 22 double faults. That's just terrible for a top player. She is a very talented player but she will not win any matches or any grand slam against Aryna or Iga or even Pegula by hitting 22 double faults. Just to give you context, for the whole match Aryna hit just 1 double fault. Coco should have won this match in straight sets. Her double faults cost her this match and the loss at the US Open. She needs to figure this out in the off season and I know she is working at it but as a result of this I cannot watch her matches live. Every time she serves and misses a first serve, I'll expecting her to double fault.

All it took for Gauff to lose her focus and then the match was about a 5-6 min. span while they closed the roof. Sabalenka sat down in the player's area and no doubt kept her mind on the match, not worrying about any distraction. Gauff stood by the tournament advisor person asking question after question, seeming overly concerned about the time between the stoppage and the next game. When she went to serve, up a break 4-3 and a set, she fell apart. Two DFs, 2 OEs, Sabalenka broke & ran off 6 straight games. It was basically over at that point.

A super competitive match, and obviously each player gave it her all. From that standpoint a very worthy final. Yet, Sabalenka hit so many ugly unforced errors. She looked sloppy in her preparation. The odds worked out for her all -or- nothing game ultimately and she gets the credit for sheer guts and perseverance. Whereas Gauff was playing lights out tennis apart from her Achilles Heel serve, finding glaring openings that her opponent left to exploit. Overall, I found it to be a sputtering performance. Excellent highlight reel.

This was a very interesting match. Sabalenka is a very good player and deserves to be number 1. Gauff is a better player as she is very young compared to the top 2. The WTA finals will be very interesting. I think there will be a big surprise for some people.

Sabalenka should really work on varying her first serve speed and spin in the off season. When the courts are slow she doesn’t get enough free points and she’s more prone to get frustrated. Both played great though especially considering its the end of a long season
