I had the pleasure of inviting Jocko Willink @JockoPodcastOfficial onto my podcast for the first time.
I've been on Jocko’s podcast several times in the past and now get the opportunity to reverse the interviewing role to learn more about his life and endeavors. We discuss his experience in the military and war; exploring time in the Navy Seals, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Jocko recounts what it looks like to be on the ground in combat scenarios and the requirement of strong leadership in the Seal teams. I ask him about his formative years growing up with a warrior personality. We cover other engaging points of interest in his kid books, time as an English major, restarting a clothing line in a dying factory town, and much more.
Jocko Willink is an American author, podcaster, and retired naval officer who served in the Navy SEALs. His books include New York Times bestseller Extreme Ownership, Discipline Equals Freedom a field manual, and his children’s book The Way of the Warrior Kid. Jocko also has one of the most successful podcasts out there so check out the Jocko Podcast.
Find more of Jocko Willink on his podcast website, check out his clothing line www.originmaine.com

I emphatically disagree. Experience is the ultimate educator. The wisdom that Jordan Peterson has gained is priceless. His understanding of the human mind has broadened and given him the ability to reach more people. I do not necessarily enjoy this term, but he has truly been “enlightened” in so many ways. It takes such diligent time and effort to know the REAL truth and I see this understanding deepening in the mind of Jordan Peterson as time goes on. Maturity and simplicity go hand-in-hand.

This is the happiest and calmest I’ve seen Jordan in recent memory and I honestly think it’s because Jocko is so great at creating a simple dynamic of how he thinks and lives his life. The joy Jordan has reliving his younger years of play and experiences is probably a welcome break he needed from the past few years of torment and scrutiny. Jocko never disappoints and this episode made me appreciate him that much more that he could make Jordan smile and laugh... two great men... a warrior and a intellectual sharing the same wavelength for 2 hours!

I just wanted you both to know how much appreciate your contribution to humanity and this world as a whole. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Meeting “famous people“ is so far down on my priority list that it barely ranks, but it would be an honor to meet either of these individuals and I hope someday God grants me the opportunity to cross their paths.

I was a Chief in the Navy, because of that I understand why Jocko became an English major. In the military and in life as a whole, your own mastery of language can take you and those around you to places you couldn’t imagine. You increase your chances of becoming truly powerful. Writing and communication can not only dictate your path but potentially the path of a nation.
@thewiseowl5819
@thewiseowl5819 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamA-pm3yn Apparently you don’t understand the language properly because I did corroborate with what Jocko said and how he said it. I also added some of my own thoughts because they added value to what Jocko said about writing and communication. Writing and communication are particular degrees of the life experience. Or I could just say “what he said “.
@thewiseowl5819
@thewiseowl5819 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamA-pm3yn look brother. You, me or anyone with half a brain can dissect what everyone says and find a fault in what someone has said. Especially when talking about any complex issue facing society or an individual. Meaning.... You cannot truly understand where someone is coming from or the degree at which their understanding of a subject is without hearing more than just a couple sentences. Meaning... instead of trying to correct someone’s wording because it doesn’t mesh with your view of how it should be written but you can agree with the intended meaning then just simply say cool. There’s more important things to disagree on. And yes. I do believe that my perspective of being in the military and especially the fact of me being a Chief carries a different weight to the discussion based off of my experience not only in life but the amount of individuals that I’ve interacted with over the years. That’s one of the benefits of being in the military that most individuals will not experience. Meaning.... I’ve dealt with a wider spectrum of people than most people. Served with and led tens of thousands of people from most walks of life. Met and talked to probably around a million people in my lifetime. Visited 67 countries and 42 of the 50 states. My opinion is my opinion and you have to take what anyone says with a grain of thought. It’s why a few cultures revere their older population because of respect and wisdom based on experience. Now to your point, just because someone is transsexual that doesn’t mean that I hold their opinion to a high regard when it comes to them saying it’s ok for everyone to do it. Or that a child should be able to decide what they want to be. I base my opinion on that experience as a Chief who dealt with thousands of young adults that were willing to put their lives on the line but didn’t know who they were themselves. A few of the things you speak of are major contributors to why not only America but the rest of the world is still jacked up. Just like anything in life. You get what you put into it. Meaning... We as a species need to re evaluate what we put into children. Human beings aren’t made to thrive in this type of world. This type of world leads to destruction instead of balance. The haves against the have nots.

@@AdamA-pm3yn You don’t know me dude. Secondly, just because you can arm yourself with a vocabulary that doesn’t mean you can think. Your last comment shows me that you don’t know what your talking about if your summarization is that I’m a post modernist. No where in anything that I’ve said could lead you to that conclusion. Meaning.... You don’t know shit if that’s what you believe. Meaning.... if that’s what you got from what I said then it brings into question your other opinions, thoughts and ideas because your way off brother. Carry on shipmate.
@thewiseowl5819

@@AdamA-pm3yn here I’ll help you understand. I’m a Chief. Yes I believe my understanding of certain things is at a higher degree than many people regarding certain things that I’ve experienced more than other people. You call me a post modernist because I said that I have a higher level of understanding about something or my group has a higher understanding about that something. Correct? You have an understanding of what a post modernist is based in part on what you’ve learned about what a post modernist is. Basically your taking someone else’s idea of what a post modernist is slapping it on people and then patting yourself on the back thinking that you understand when you don’t. Correct? What I’m saying is that you don’t “really understand “ what a post modernist is. This is why you don’t understand what your talking about.... I’m a Chief and yes there is 10s of thousands of Chiefs that don’t understand to the degree of what I understand about knowledge and communication. Try looking at it from this perspective. Take the NFL, there’s thousands of Athletes that played in the NFL. There’s different levels of understanding in the NFL community when it comes to what it takes to be the best mentally and physically in the NFL. Doesn’t take away from the others. It also doesn’t mean that people that played in the NFL are the only ones that know. There’s just certain people that know and understand more. I don’t know where I fall in the spectrum of understanding when it comes to military members. That doesn’t take away from the fact that I have or that my group has which is not a group that’s controversial in today’s world. If anything, my group is comprised with people from every spectrum that the United States has to offer. Many of us haven’t drank the cool aid and understand that it’s what’s inside the individual instead of their gender, skin color or any other label that people use in order to put one group above the other. Meaning.... I’m just a dude that understands too much but at the same time I understand that I don’t know shit myself. There’s too much to know and there’s even more that I don’t know that I should understand it because I haven’t came into contact with it. Meaning.... You don’t know what you don’t know. Do I know what I’m talking about? Yes and no is the answer but no I’m not a post modernist.

I can say with 100% conviction that I’ve impacted thousands in a way that you wouldn’t understand unless you were there. So yes. I have to agree. The people who are supposed to be male role models in my life rather very much failed in that regard. It's hard to extend trust in the advice and example of others because of that too. But if I have to choose? Yeah, I'm going to pick men like this, who are real men.

That’s cause he’s Albertan. Hardest workers in Canada and the most conservative province, hard work with conservative values breeds success. He grew up in a fairly tough town, if no one here understands how tough the rig workers are and how brutal they are working Canadian winters, they oughta meet some of those men. Anyway, his town would’ve been entirely oil rig workers and young men would’ve flocked there for the high paying job of rigs. I’m so proud of this man and I must say he’s saved my life or at the bare minimum he’s put the vector in the right direction even if the angle isn’t perfect.

I always end up tearing up from just raw appreciation to live in a time to be able to find people like this that live hundreds if not thousands miles away and yet can make a huge impact on me. and hopefully I can pass along a little of them throughout my life. Much much love Jordan thank you for everything, I thank God every day you made it out of the of the hell you occupied, and honestly hate to imagine the suffering that came to you. but for you to come back, motivated as ever... You don't have to be this good, this strong, this hard working, this consistent but you are. For me, and for everyone else out there starving for these encouraging words of wisdom and these tools for operating in the world. I honestly think that Jordan Peterson being able to do these podcasts is giving him life week by week. Going by all that he has said and all that happened in prior podcasts and with the akathisia, the inability to work was draining Jordan horribly. But now he can do something, and further clean up his own room after the mess the side effects of getting off of prescription benzodiazepines (and life) caused.

Jocko is insanely humble. His answers to these questions make it seem like he’s answering from a mentality of somehow who doesn’t know what he’s doing, or why he ever started doing it. It’s like he doesn’t have anything to offer. When in reality, he has so much to offer, and he knows it. He focuses on the current moment regardless of what he is when looking at the whole picture. He focuses on his bottom line and doesn’t try to live at his top line. It’s incredibly inspiring for someone like me who is looking to improve my leadership skills. Looking at moments like these makes you wonder how they get to where they are or accomplish what they accomplish. Because you can’t See it, they don’t Sell it. It shows that the way to success is to pay attention to the current moment and it’s bottom line. In this world where were so distracted, we’re aiming for a million things in a million directions, trying to hustle with every moment of the day, overanalyzing ourselves and lives as a whole, and some of us having issues even getting out of bed(probably because of the chaos of it all), the way to succeed is to block all of that out, focus on your bottom lines, focus on the now, focus on yourself. You get far by focusing on what’s right in front of you.
