In this lecture, Dr Madeleine Davies (University of Reading) explores the genre of literary modernism, focusing in particular on: (i) its development from the literature of the Victorian period; (ii) the importance of the ordinary or the everyday (“the ordinary mind on an ordinary day”); (iii) the difference in plot and character compared to the Victorian novel; (iv) the use of symbolism; and (v) the emphasis on sexuality.
This lecture is part of a larger course on Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. The full course can be found here: www.massolit.io/courses/woolf...
MASSOLIT works with university academics to produce short video lectures in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It is available to schools and colleges on an institutional license as well as via private subscription: www.massolit.io/?source=yt

Or the proto-modernist Poe (THE TELL-TALE HEART, for example)., though not in the form of a novel, and/or the Surrealists/Dada-iss's experiments. W.H. Hodgson's HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND---not so sure about that one.
