What an impressive video, very educational for those of us that are not overly excited about electrical systems and batteries as such. Thank you for doing the torture test in such a way that explains exactly what the test is about and what the likely result will be, followed up with the evidence to support the test. One thing that I hope you'll cover in the future is whether a lithium battery can withstand the vigour of under bonnet life as a start battery, and whether the battery can still perform as it should 12 months or so later.

I don't think these batteries are designed to be used as a starter battery, more like for "house" loads, which is why they have so much capacity.

That Renogy 3000W inverter. I have rattled the S-*t out of it. Over the last 2 years. Still going strong. I had the Renogy 2000W in my pervious camper. Never had any issues with it either. I am looking forward to the new smart inverters getting to Aus. Especially if released in the 3000W. I have in my hand a Renogy One Core and Smart Shunt for a future install. Also integrating some Renogy Zigbee switches. So I can remote turn on/off items in the camper. They are now longstanding, reliable and trusted brand.

Hey Dan, great video, I was tossing up to get the Non Smart 200a, or the Smart 200a, currently 20% off so the 200a smart $1039 AU, after watching this I decided to go with the Smart version, I would have liked the 300A version but only available in non-smart version currently thanks for the Video.

I've got their 30 amp DC-DC charger in my vehicle, and I rate it. I just wish they had made their battery monitor/shunt able to connect to the DC Home app so that I can monitor my non-smart battery from the app.

@@KarlEller your’re right for the DCDC. On my vehicle setup, I run for the last 3/4 years a 50 ah Renogy battery. They are not the smart one. I was was ok the the monitor plugged in the charger I wanted the full info as well so last spring, I installed a shunt. I now have all the info, what goes in and what goes out. It’s worth the trouble of swapping the wiring.

@@cotepierre68 Oh cool, I can see they have a smart shunt now, that wasn't available when I purchased my charger and battery monitor. I might upgrade to that when I re-do my 12V wiring.

Two things. The battery can be discharged at a lower temperature than it can be charged. Case may be fire-proof, but I would say fire ‘resistant’ as these batteries will combust at 600 degrees.

Great information as usual Dan. I wish someone would develop a self heating starting battery. I really like the anti-gravity brand of starting batteries but I don’t want to risk it in cold weather situations.

Awesome video! I’ve been looking for a self heating water proof battery to mount on the tongue of my Aliner camper. This might be a silly question but do I need to worry about having this connected as a house battery, mounted outside on the tongue of the trailer, while there are wires attached to the battery if it rains or gets wet? So if I’m inside the camper and I’m using 12v power off of this battery and it rains outside will it short anything out due to the water hitting the live terminals? Apologies I’m just not sure how the IP67 is rated. Can you submerge it and still discharge 12v on it at the same time?
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 3 ай бұрын
That is a good question. I'm sure officially it says don't do that, but in reality I think rain would be fine. Underwater I have no idea, that is no something I tested. If it was me I'd put it in a battery box or something to keep it out of the elements, otherwise it's going to get caked in mud, peppered with rocks from the tow vehicle, etc.

Dan, can you clarify if Renogy has built in any additional capacity to ensure that accidentally draining the battery to 0 percent SoC does not ruin it? Some manufacturers set a usable limit at about 10-20 percent less than the actual capacity of the battery. I know Renogy recommends not discharging below 20pc SoC, but would be useful to know if they have that built in reserve to prevent the battery from accidental discharges to 0 percent. Thanks

Hi Dan! interesting! Do they have package for my off grid mini project. I have plans for large solar, wind and gasifier project when my home is done, but during construction I need something to turn common construction tools, cement mixer, table saw etc. Also able to power my induction cooker, water heater and few small things. I can buy packages here in Poland, but I find them expensive per A hour. I do plan to have generator on site to use during cloudy days and heavy use. Do they even sell in Europe? On the link I just got USD quotation?

I was wondering how the battery heated itself without draining the entire charge. Makes sense that it waits until it has a charging source to then start that process to save the charge. It would make sense then to have a solar panel attached to it to then feed it enough power to be ready to discharge rather than just a DC-DC charger in a camp type situation where the vehicle is just sitting. I do wonder if Renogy has likewise figured what it might do if it is nearing freezing while under discharge. For example, if I'm running a diesel heater to my RTT at night with battery in the cold. It detects that while its getting close to not being able to discharge, it may need to activate its heating? Could it then alert the app that it either is about to stop discharging, or alert them that it is going to have to kick on its heating to discharge further? I realize that the discharge temp goes much lower than charging temp, but it would be an interesting question to ask Renogy.
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 5 ай бұрын
It does alert in the app when the temp is getting low, and it is approaching the temp at which it can not discharge any more.

@oliver90owner
@oliver90owner Ай бұрын
You are referring to historical fires. They no longer ignite anywhere near as often as historically. Further, many (lower powered) Teslas are fitted with Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries now. EV Lithium battery technology has been around for only a few years. Improvements are taking place at a remarkable rate. Batteries with twice the power density of 2023 batteries are now available (2024). There is one vehicle on the road which can be charged from 20% to 80% in just over 4 minutes. They will soon completely overcome all the ICE luddite claims (most are already - or always were - irrelevant anyway).
