Trakai Castle is one of the most magical places I've ever visited! I can't wait to come back again and see how beautiful it looks in winter!

Other great ideas for a day trips from Vilnius could be Aukstaitija National Park (Paluse, Ginuciai, Ladakalnis and Labanoras) and Dzukija National Park (Druskininkai, Merkine, Grutas, Marcinkonys). However, you would need a rental car for both of these places

Lithuania is not siberia 😂 It doesn't get that cold. Max - 32 Celsius (-25 Fahrenheit) And yet still. I grew up in Lithuania, lived there for 19 years and I would say in England when there is -7 is way colder than Lithuania -20 .

The standard pronunciation is Trãkai ['tra:kʌɩ], but in colloquial speech is said Trakaĩ [trʌ'kʌɩ].

Once again, I commend you on your interest in history, which I love. I think that is one of the big defects of so many of the KZbin channels on Mexico, which show different cities and towns but teach us little about what has happened there in the past. That has been one of my big frustrations with a lot of the KZbin material. I think that a presenter that doesn't do research before filming and has no idea what he or she is seeing is intellectually lazy. You have a very pleasant speaking voice, coupled with an innocent laugh, and are perfect for the job. Congratulations.

6:10 I remember times (in soviet times) when Trakai was pronounced with accent on end. Then it was changed to be in middle with prolonged but not too long "a" - [Traakai] - Trãkai.

You should visit Trakai during weekdays because it is so much less crowded. The correct pronunciation is Trãkai but even Lithuanians say it wrong most of the time.

Make sure to visit Kernave. It's 30minutes by bus from Vilnius and it's a hilly location that used to be the capital of Lithuania. It's hilly, you can spend all day walking there, there's an outside medieval village museum as well as an indoor museum in the town. The outdoor museum of Kernave is free entrance as well. Definitely worth the visit.

There is another castle in trakai, the "peninsula castle" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trakai_Peninsula_Castle I haven't been there for a while, but it used to host a lot of the medieval fairs and festivals. Although It's definitely in a worse condition than the island castle.

Twelve euros is quite expensive for a castle. I saw on their price list though that students and pensioners pay half price, so the visit became more appealing. Your practical information is excellent. Good job.

It was SO tasty. Similar flavor to lamb but it was ground meat so a little bit coarser than say having a piece of tender lamb. It was really delicious :)

Vowel in lithuanian is easy, just read everything rough as in Latin (not Trakey but TrakAi, not Kibiney but KibinAi [A=ah]). During times of Trakai Castle lithuanians were like Vikings of land, more about fighting then beauty and aesthetics. Dutchy was expanded towards Moscow and Black see.

trAkai. trAAAAkai. It's plural from "trAkas" which is "clearing" (or maybe "glade", judging by dictionary). There was a large forest with many clearings in the past. Stress on the end appers when the speaker unconsciously associates this word with other similar short words in which the accent is usually at the end. Words like, say, "gerai", "blogai", "gražiai", "pilnai", also some names of some towns. Also russians tend to stress the last syllable. So you can hear such pronunciation here and there...

Thanks so much for the information on pronunciation, it is tricky to differentiate the syllable stressing when comparing to gerai (which I hear ALLLL the time haha). Thanks for you help!

TRAH-kayh ('i' in "Trakai" at the end is not as prolonged as you pronounce it. It shouldn't sound as prolonged as english word "I"). Some Lithuanians (including me) not stress even TRAH as much. But almost no one says it tra-KAI.

The vowels in Lithuanian are always* pronounced the same way. So a is always "ah". In English, "a" is pronounced differently all the time, for example, in "car", "bag", "same". Once you learn what sound each vowel is, you should be able to read Lithuanian words no problem.
