The Holland Lop we had at the school-age day care where I worked, made a mess in a corner of the staff restroom. I put a box in that spot and he used it when we let him roam. One day I saw him sitting next to the closed restroom door, so I watched, because I couldn't believe he was doing what I suspected. He could have hopped across the room and used his cage, which was open, but he waited for the teacher to open the door and leave, then hopped in to use his litter box. I told the teacher he had to go so bad, that he had crossed his ears.

I work mostly with agouti and wideband colors (chinchilla, chestnut, orange, cream, frosty) and a bit of sable. I probably won't have chocolates in the near future. :) I actually don't leash train my bunnies as I have heard some scary stories about bunnies getting too stressed and hurting themselves while in the harness. I prefer exercise pens and allowing them to roam in a big room for play time. Just my preference. :)

I have two unnuetered rabbits together. They are great friends. When I first got them (I got them young) they di dnt use their litter box, the would go everywhere! I have now had them now for a bit over 5 months and they have 3 litter boxes in a large enclosure. They use them but I will come in the morning and see some poop scattered. But the important part is they always lee in the boxes and most poop. They took longer to learn but they finally did it. Because they are unneutered it took them about 2 and a half months.

I just had my bunny neutered a couple of days ago. Since he's been back he hasn't used to litter box to pee even once. He is peeing on the spot while eating his pellets suddenly, which he has never done before. All the poop is everywhere too but I can handle that, it's the never ending clean up of pee. I have wiped it up and put the paper in the litter box to remind him thats' where he needs to go but nothing has changed. This mustn't be very common, as the vet seemed dumbfounded

Great video! I have a 3 year old male lion head bunny who has one litter box inside his cage and one in his play area. He always urinates in his litter boxes, but he still poops outside his litter boxes. He is not neutered either. A vacuum would make things sooo much easier!

Yep, a vacuum helps a lot, but I have heard that neutering does as well since pooping in their environment is often a territorial behavior.

When they do have accidents, what do you spot clean with after you soak up the urine with the paper towel?

Great question. I have a spray bottle filled with white vinegar and water in about a 3:1 ratio (it's mostly vinegar). I also have used cheap vodka/water/essential oils in a spray bottle but never got any cleaning done because I kept consuming it, LOL (just kidding). Vinegar is just cheaper. :)

Hi there, can I ask while I'm potty training my bunny I understand keeping hay over the potty is #1. During the potty training time frame, is it important to not keep hay else where? Also, once the bunny is potty trained is it still ideal to only have the hay by the potty or will putting hay else encourage them to potty elsewhere. ?

today is just day two of our bunny adventure, we brought home two netherland dwarf 9 week old babies yesterday. They have peed once in the kitchen and once in their pen, but they are pooping constantly all over their pen including on their bed, in their tunnel and anywhere they can. In fact, I'm not sure they are using their litter box to poo at all. Their hay bag hangs right above the box, but so much for eating and pooping at the same time. In your video I dont see any litter box with hay hanging above it or even any hay in it, so where is their hay? Also, you put the music on when you were hoovering their cages, but I wanted to see how loud your hoover is. Dont your bunnies get scared? Mine were terrified, so I had to put them in the laundry room and close the door before I could hoover up their cage. It was an exercise in futility, since they pooped everywhere as soon as they went in anyway. I keep telling myself its only day two, and things will get better, but maybe I need two litterboxes, and maybe I need to wait till they are neutered. But I'm reluctant to get two boxes because I want them to have space to run around in their pen, and not crowd it.
@HooksHollands4 жыл бұрын
Keep your chin up! Not only are baby bunnies notorious for leaving poops around, but yours also may be completely new to the litter box experience as well as the sound of the vacuum. I place the hay in, above, or near the litter boxes. Spaying/neutering will help with their desire to mark their territory. As far as the vacuum, mine tolerate it well but have been exposed to it daily for quite some time. I have a blog article that may help you: www.ohiohollandlops.com/bunny-blog/category/litter-training

Poop happens unfortunately, and unless your bunny is spayed/neutered, I think you're just going to have to deal with the poop balls here and there. The urine is the big issue in my opinion since most of the poop is dry and easy to clean/vacuum. Good luck! :)

We just got our first pet rabbit- mini rex! She's 3 months old and will be spaying her shortly I think. We are attempting to litter train her. She's in a cage that's W 30.50", D 17.50", H 16.00 atm, she's an indoor bunny that I hope someday to let roam our house. ATM, we are letting her out a couple times a day to run around my son's carpeted room, which she loves, but she pees and poops everywhere! She is beginning to use her corner box in the cage, mostly only for pee, but I'm finding she also seems to hold her pee until we let her run free in my son's room... When potty training, do you keep them stuck in their small cage until they learn, or do they still get free roam time even though they make messes everywhere? Should I stop letting her out of the cage till she's trained? I feel bad not letting her run since the cage seems small to me (even though she's small atm). I've never had a caged animal before (we have 2 indoor cats- so much easier to train!). Advice? Should I get her a bigger cage? Keep it small? Let her out/keep her in? Her current cage has wire bottom but I want to upgrade her to solid bottom. She seems to like pooping in the center of her cage. Any advice appreciated! Thanks! "Diamond" also thanks you.
@HooksHollands7 жыл бұрын
It usually helps to keep the room very small until you see the bunny returning to the litter pan in the room for potty breaks. Then, you can expand the free-roaming zone. Additional litter boxes are helpful. As for the cage, bigger is almost always better. My bunnies have 42" wide cages that are 24" deep and some two stories. It depends on how much time they spend in their cages.

@HooksHollands7 жыл бұрын
A couple of them hide, but they usually don't seem to mind. I bought a diffuser/muffler for my Rigid vacuum at Home Depot (like $11), and not only does it stop the exhaust from blowing hay all over, but it also quiets the vacuum a bit. They just get used to it, and some use the opportunity to escape out the door for exercise, so they see it as a positive I think. :)

Why do all of your rabbits poop on the cage floor instead of the litter box?

They do poop in the litter box quite often, but unless spayed/neutered, a rabbit will mark its territory.

hey Hooks Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops is it easier to train a female rabbit or a male?

Honestly, I think it depends on the particular rabbit, as I have bucks and does who are very good about at least peeing in the litter boxes and a couple of each who have accidents on occasion. If you have other bunnies close by, I think bucks tend to want to spray their scent, but if more secluded, those same bucks can be litter trained more easily. I thought does would be much easier, but with non-spayed/non-neutered bunnies in close proximity, it's actually been pretty even between the genders for litter training.

Ok thanks so much, I am about to get my 2nd bunny and I love 2 of the bunnies in the litter which are opposite genders I just am trying to make a list of pro and cons to help me decide.

Adding extra litter boxes, keeping the area small, and spaying/neutering can all help with more complete litter training.
