He looked about 2 years old when he was past 3, & he'd say things like " it's not my responsibility". The looks on people's faces were hilarious. He had a very strong accent very much like this sweet boy. I have a cassette of him talking about his imaginary " friend-man, Jim, " where he had a ranch up in the high country, where he had a diesel truck to move his horses & his KITT car, with his corralls, etc. It was a very long story & I almost cry when we listen to it. Something I find amazing is the similarity between old English and southern American. I've read several articles by linguists who explain how different cultures make the sounds of their speech and it seems as the world moved on after England colonized the south, the southerners never changed speech patterns. There are examples on you tube. And lastly every southerner cringes at fake accent. I've heard accents I'd swear were legit when it turns out the speakers are either Scot or Welsh.

In the military i took a leadership course. We had to describe a process in front of the class without telling what the outcome was supposed to be. This was to facilitate communication and delegation of duties. We also were judged on the use of filler words such as: “uh” and “um” Years later when I home schooled my kids, I had each of them spontaneously tell a story. They couldn’t use those same filler words. If they used a filler word then the other siblings would whack them with a soft pillow. It created a very limited amount of pressure and forced them to slow down and think a little more before they spoke. It didn’t take too long before no one could speak because we were all laughing too hard.

Telling stories is an art form in the south. In schools across the country, kids are taught about indigenous peoples all over the world and their use of oral history, how with the coming of the written word the need for oral history dies out. I got to thinking about that. If you are a southern kid, you know that a gathering of friends and family, without fail, will have a story telling component. We've all had that elder, who MUST be respected or else, say "Come over here Sugar, I wanna tell you about the time....." In your head you're saying "OMG, not the story about Grandaddy, Uncle Mike and how the cow set the house on fire!!" AGAIN. But you sit and listen politely because to do otherwise would certainly bring calamity when you get home. Calamity in the form of an embarrassed mother of a child who hasn't been taught "right". In these long ago and/or other cultures, does anyone wonder how this oral tradition works? Did those kids hear a story once and it's remembered forever? I got a mental picture of the tribe, sitting around a fire. The elders using the oral history traditional way. I know, KNOW, there were kids thinking "OMG, not this one again. Please not how the moon maiden fell and as she landed stars gave light to the sky" Or "If I hear how Joe, son of Moe, uncle to Curly the Great, saved the tribe.." We learn through repetition. Now when my grandkids get that look because a "Granny Story" is coming I tell them "One day, when you are grown-up and I am gone you will want this story. You'll understand it is a piece of me, a gift". Then, because they're being raised "right", they say yes Ma'am and I can barely see the twitching effort to keep the eye roll under control. Ps anyone have an angry mother say "You roll your eyes at me again & I'm gonna slap 'em outa your head!"
@susancase15413 жыл бұрын
@@AVToth Oh my goodness, Amy, your writing skills must be right up there with your oral storytelling talents. I laughed out loud at the internal dialogue of the kids as ole pappy sat rocking in his chair getting wound up for the retelling of the family lore and then again around the tribal campfire. Great stuff. Have you ever written anything? I bet you're a natural. Thanks for the smiles.

@@therealwildthornberrys9634 I'm happy to hear you have other children. ❤❤ The video of this sweet boy is a testament to your good parenting!! And this boy is CLEARLY exceptionally bright; such an imagination & so articulate at such an early age!! ❤❤ That can only be enhanced by interacting w/other family members. If this beautiful boy is any example, you are doing an exceptional job of parenting!! May GOD continue to bless you & your family as you go forward!!

I love this. When he is grown you will watch this and cry because it will remind you of how much joy your little boy gave you. You always love them of course, but when they are little it's very intense. My kids and grandkids sounded like that. It seems that these days it fades some as they get older. It breaks my heart to no longer hear the deep southern accents that surrounded me growing up. Each southern region was distinct. My mother was from Georgia but we moved to Texas after my father retired to be near his family. The accents were southern but different. When Mama talked on the phone I knew right away it was someone from Georgia because her deep south Georgia accent would snap right back.

It's our society and culture trying to homogenize the whole country. That's why it "fades" when they start going to school and interact with society and the media more. So many people my age (30s) dropped their accents so people from elsewhere wouldn't think that they're a hick (damn stereotypes) and/or because they thought you were supposed to sound like the people on TV. I think it's sad.
@AVToth Жыл бұрын
@@mchobbit2951 You are absolutely correct. The homogeneity, we aren't milk! I was appalled to find out my grandkids were not required, REQUIRED!, to address their teachers as Ma'am and Sir. With their Granny, the first miss gets them a ' the warning look' from the parent. Granny becomes either very hard of hearing or being unaware of their answer. My kids are in their 40's and their lifelong friends call me Mrs. Toth. I love them dearly but we are not equals. I haaaate when in a business matter, whoever it is even if the person is older than me, they have my full name but call me Amy. I correct them. You don't know me. I am a customer (or client). Ms. Toth is my name unless and until I say different. Those things have nothing to do with age, contrary to the modern public opinion. I will call a young person ma'am or sir if I don't know them. In the US, people look at how the different tribes of native Americans talk to each other, how elders are given terms of respect. They marvel and long for the oral tradition of their history. Respect was discarded, not by our kids but by the elders in our society. Let's all be friends! They don't understand what oral tradition is because Hollywood has given some glorified version. It seems people think that kids gathered around a fire and some high ranking elder told the story of why they have snow, why leaves fall from the trees etc. Then everyone remembers forever. How cool. I don't think so. Kids are all ages and stories were repeated because that's how we learn and because of the different ages. I have no doubt that there were adolescent NAs who cringed and whispered to their friend or siblings "Kill me now! I can't hear 'why the rabbit has long ears' one more time! Why do they tell the same thing over and over? This is so boring". We still have this. The stories of your family, your people are the stories Granddaddy or Aunt Rose tell over and over. They begin with - I remember one time or remember that time. They are "Well, when I was in school...." They may not be as exciting as stories in the movies but they are history that you will miss terribly when nobody is around to tell them. I apologize for the long winded rant. I should just delete this instead of inflicting you with it. It is like our accents, our manners, who we are not just Americans but right down to community and family. I can feel another lecture building up so thank you for agreeing with me about this sweet little boy's story.
@mchobbit2951 Жыл бұрын
@@AVToth It makes me sad that we are losing so much of our heritage. I almost did add that so many kids in the South don't even say ma'am and sir anymore. I was looking FORWARD to being a ma'am when I was a little girl. Sometime this summer, I was responding to a comment on the facebook page of one of Loretta Lynn's daughters and referred to her as "Miss Patsy" (talking to the other person who made the comment). My 35-year-old friend, who was born and raised in the South, saw it and messaged me that I shouldn’t do that, it comes across like I’m trying to get Miss Patsy to like it or suck up or whatever. Because all these other people that didn’t know her were using her first name. Like..what? I don’t care if it’s online or what other people are doing, there is no way I’m using the first name of someone who was born in the same year as my mother without a title. I in fact felt like I was still pushing it by using her first name at all because I don’t actually know these people. Of course my friend’s kids have never said ma’am or sir. Many in their 30s and 40s went off to college up North and came back...well, I’d almost say indoctrinated. This friend in particular is now against the way we were raised and feels like you “can’t be yourself” in the South. So I guess being yourself means sounding like a TV newscaster and calling everyone by their first name? Or are you just conforming...but to something other than the Southern culture you reject? We need to protect our cultural heritage or the Southern accents and traditions will be gone another few decades. I try not to think about it so much because it makes me so sad and it’s not like I can do anything about it.

Nowadays peeps are in such a rush and merely half-heartedly listen (to ANYbody).. a damn shame, really! But this boy is just SO adorable and is one smart cookie - in no small part thanks to adults who don't talk down to him! It's that same love and attention that also SHINES thru!
