During the early history of the United States, the court dress of judges and practicing lawyers closely mirrored British court dress of the 18th century; both wore white powdered wigs and (typically) black robes in the lower courts, and in the higher ones, judges would wear red with black markings. The practice fell out of favor and died out by the mid-nineteenth century

Bit of context, Mollie Sugden was a British actrice who was famous for playing the character Mrs. Slocombe in the sitcom Are You Being Served (which took place in the clothing section of a department store). Have you ever looked into buying that box set? It is literally impossible unless you buy the Euro version and the necessary DVD player that plays Euro DVD’s. It’s fucking amazing but the fact that I can’t download it anywhere in the US and there’s not even a “box set” available is crazy. I’ve seen the show back to back 4 to 5 times and I want to own it, but I can’t. Which honestly is crazy…It’s up there with Seinfeld and Always Sunny….one of the best
