Well, I Often choose from what's on hand. Something not too flimsy. But easy to stitch through. My cloth collection is unusual because I worked in the textile industry for years. This is a medium wight linen cotton blend. About dish towel weight.

If you use batik fabric you will have quite a challenge. It is so tightly woven it is hard to sew through.
