Little Caesars - The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again

Little Caesars is traditionally one of the four largest pizza chains and in my opinion, they do a good job in separating themselves from the others. They're the cheapest AND the fastest, which is especially important for a fast food chain. But from the early 1990's to the mid 2000's, they had some major troubles. This video profiles their rise to popularity, their decline during those years, and how they brought it all back.

The fact that Mike Ilitch supported Rosa Parks at the end of her life without once making a big deal out of it, brought affordable, safe, edible food and jobs to the hood, and used pizza as a vehicle to make the world a better place says that while they're #3 in sales, Little Caesar's will always be #1 in my book. You ask me what pizza I want, it'll always be them, because I believe that their money supports an overall good business practice and a positive community impact.

Little Caesar's has always been one of my favorite pizza places. I grew up with it and out of the three pizza places I'd eat from in my childhood LC stuck. I don't ever remember having Papa John's (when apparently i did) and another that i barely remember (i think it was called Mugs). I have so many memories of me and my father getting Little Caesar's all the time. It was THE summer pizza , if that makes sense. It holds a special place in my heart and now hearing this , something i didn't know before , makes me feel even better saying it's my number 1 favorite pizza place!

I lived near Detroit in the 80s - early 90s, I still remember the excitement I would feel when dad or mom came home with that big ass two pizza package and a bag of crazy bread. It was gonna be a good night! I loved ripping that paper apart to reveal two pizzas, they were sitting there, looking at me, just asking for it. Now I'm in Texas and have watched LC pop up all over the place over the last 10-15 years. Not, gonna lie, I pop in and get a hot n ready every now and then...it brings back all the good feels from when I was a kid.

I worked there for a little over a year. Wether you like their pizza or not, the ingredients arent bad. The dough is mixed in an old school mixer from flour, salt, yeast, sugar and water every night and morning (small batch at night to have dough for morning pizzas) it is never frozen. The sauce is also mixed every morning. The toppings are usually quality and fresh. It may not be the best tasting, but it definitely isnt low quality

I think alot of people come to assumptions based on the price and that it's a pizza chain, but they really do put in the work to make it fresh. The new Little Caesars in my town is great and they have the back opened up enough where you can see the mixer and a wall of bagged flour beside it, which is great. Shows the customers that they don't use frozen already made dough.

I've been working at Little Caesars for the past 2 and a half years and honestly I would say the quality of the pizza comes down to the care whoever makes it, gives it. Knowing this, it makes sense that the quality of the food is affected by the high expectations towards the company for delivering the service as quickly as possible, and having pizzas hot n' ready. If you expect good quality pizza that is hot and ready, don't. What you will likely get is hot n' sweaty. Try to get a fresh pizza and it will make a difference. If you want it to be fresh, fast, and don't want to feel like you are bothering people by asking for fresh food, you should try ordering something like a half pepperoni and half cheese because we don't have those ready, but they are really easy and fast to make. It should only take about 5 minutes for a great improvement in quality.

I worked at one in a college town in the 90s. We were one of the few locations that delivered. We delivered pizza with no cell phones and no GPS, just a huge map on the wall lol. You got two pizzas but it was virtually by taking the ingredients for one pizza and dividing it between two pies. I miss the cream cheese spread that came with the crazy bread back then. After I left, I found out that one day the employees showed up for work and there was a padlock on the door. They could see inside that the ovens were gone. They never got their paychecks. I eventually went to work delivering for Papa John's. They paid minimum wage plus tips. I made a killing as a college student. I always had cash. I think it's outsourced today.

I've heard this joke before. It's good, because even though it's riffing on Little Caesars, it highlights what makes them successful. They just focus on what they're good at, and what other companies don't focus as much on, and they found a nice little niche for themselves. It doesn't need to be the best pizza because its the quickest and the cheapest, and surprisingly not many other pizza places focus on just those two things.

As a Michigan native, I can tell you something that a lot of people don't know about Mike and Marian Ilitch: their family is still involved with Little Caesars and have given back a lot to Metro Detroit. They helped pay Rosa Parks' rent for many years, and LCs offers "Little Caesars Pizza Kits" to sell at fundraisers. Mike and Marian's daughter Denise is even a regent for the University of Michigan. So regardless of how you feel about the Red Wings, the Tigers, or Little Caesars, you can't help but appreciate the Ilitches' philanthropy and community service over the years.

Your analysis is spot on with my experience. I worked at Little Caesars from 2000 to 2006. In the early days of my employment there, sales were lackluster and customers were confused about the current advertising, about “pizza pizza” no longer being a thing. Then once Hot N Ready started, everything changed. Sales went through the roof and everyday felt like a busy Friday night.

Smart move that saved the company. They can still sell slices for $1 in NY (I think just recently went to $1.50) and pay NY rents, competition pushes prices so low. So NY dollar pizzerias just move slice after slice after slice. And other places can't really claim to be MUCH better in quality (plus they made the pizza at noon and it's been sitting there for hours, vs. dollar pizza being hot and ready!) Not sure if MBAs were looking at the NY pizza market, but it's kinda fascinating (NY is expensive but dollar pizza lunch is $2, maybe $1, and the dollar pizzeria is thriving--none have gone out of business.)

One thing that yo might not have had the time to go into that may not have even existed outside of the Detroit area. But in the '90s, there actually WERE Little Caesars locations you could eat inside of. Caesarland was the company's attempt to have its own Chuck-E-Cheese (they opened in several old Chuck E. Cheese restaurants). They were quite large -- arcades, giant play sets. They even had characters of Caesar, Crazy Bread and others that had talking animatronics throughout the building. As a kid, I loved it. But I wonder if that was part of the drain on them. They didn't last super long. As a father, I've found the Hot and Ready's to be a lifesaver with kids. It's an easy fix when dinner doesn't go right or you're rushing.

I went through the same thing growing up, it was always little Caesar’s, also bruh idk what store you’re at but little Caesar’s does not treat their worker’s good💀some owners are cheap and refuse to buy stuff like crushed peppers(that’s why you don’t see them in some stores)which causes arguments between customers and employees and makes it harder for us, we’re not allowed to get free pizza which makes no sense because we work for them and make them money and half the shit that gets thrown in the oven gets dumped in the trash anyways so no one loses but they don’t see it that way ofc, some take forever to fix stuff that really needs to be fixed like the AC or the vent above the oven that allows the hot air to escape, but I’m glad you found a store you like hopefully you’re not still working there and you found a better job or if you enjoyed working there I hope you got promoted or something

@@Azrael69605 oh god i feel that. our store is exactly the same, took them 2 months to fix the AC... during a texas summer... with a 475 degree oven running the whole day. not to mention how often we have to get the ceiling tiles replaced because they don't want to actually fix the roof. or the fact the wage starts out a dollar above minimum, they work you in 6-7 hour shifts so they're not legally obligated to give you breaks and the only ones who get offered benefits are store or co managers... just... the people i work with make it bearable but little ceasars doesn't treat their stores or employees decently at all over here.

@@chronicexistentialcrisis4290 Finally someone who understands, half the people I know that work at a little Caesar’s are people who either don’t care about the job or just don’t work enough to see what goes on so they think the job is awesome. Fr bruh they lag on fixing stuff in the store, I get that it’s a business and there’s other things that the owner has to worry about but it’s their job. They wanted to buy it, they gotta take care of it. That’s like me going clocking into work but not going anything you feel me? I live in Cali, the pays not bad and I usually didn’t mind long shifts but sometimes I’d be tired and wanting to go home and I’d be nice and stay past my scheduled time to help out but if I wanted to leave they’d give me shit about it even tho I’m the only person who volunteered to stay while all the other employees left. The employees at my old store were alright, I only got a long with a few because the store was very toxic and were always trying to start something. I moved recently tho for college so now I’m working at another location but same job at little Caesar’s. It’s only for a bit so I figured why not, I’ve got experience. It’s easier here, not much rushes or anything and everyone’s cool. But yeah little Caesar’s is shit when it comes to their employees, they’re shit when it comes to everything actually💀the pizza is only good cuz it’s cheap. Like when you work there you see everything that goes on and it hits different.

I agree I think it's a great business model. Large pizza for $5 they have all the up sells they need available. In addition menu now offers the deep dish, extra most bestest and thin crust. which is only $1 or $2 more and well worth the price so for the customers willing to pay a little bit extra for better pizza they have that option as well. Those new menu options are the reason for their new found success. They have the budget pizza market locked in ready.

You can make your own, with the ingredients costing a minimum of 8 bucks. And that's good for two of 'em. Mia pizza crusts (12-inch) are US$3.94 for one pack of two (and it's got two sauce sachets, so you don't need to pick that up). Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese from Kraft is US$4.72 for one pound. The total is US$8.66, which is far cheaper than buying one for 5 bucks. Another thing is you can get cheaper for pizza if you want to make one on bread instead.

As a veteran of 2 different pizza chains (1 being LC's) I can say that the $5 Hot and Ready revolutionized the US pizza industry and is what has been killing Pizza Hut ever since. PH tried to race them to the bottom and lost, BIG TIME. Now everybody has a low cost, instant or near instant pick up option. Little Caesars changed the game.
@Foxxie0kun

And that's the heart and soul of it in the end. Competition forces companies to match each other or change the game. Worked there in 1990. It was my first job and the owner taught me lessons about business that I use to this day. They had really good pita bread sandwiches where the pita bread was made by doubling over a small crust and baking it. I can still remember the taste after all this time. Also they did a demonstration where we stacked 24 of our pepperoni slices next to our local competition, and found that ours were twice as high. Also, when cooked ours came out about the same size, while the competitor was greasy and shriveled. I never felt that the ingredients lacked quality, as we made our own dough, cut our own cheese on site and all of our vegetables were fresh. A great working experience.

@@francogunasekera1315 Don't tell a customer no. Instead, provide alternatives. Don't say "is this bad?" or "is this expired?" in front of a customer. If they hear that, the answer better be "yes" and they get something fresh. We would always say "is this dough out"? as code. Also, it's not that you are working, it is that you LOOK like you are working. A customer waiting for service can tell when an employee does not look busy. Finally, a customer can take all the time they want deciding, but once they have made their decision, they want to conclude their business and leave. They judge you on how fast you get them out the door because now you are wasting "their" time.

@@toastedjoe1013 I hate Pizza Hut. I honestly don't understand how people could say that's a good tasting pizza. You know that feeling you get when you eat something that your body is trying to tell you it doesn't agree with almost immediately after you eat it? I experience that with Pizza Hut. Maybe it's the excess of butter or the dough, I don't know. But it just doesn't agree with me.

@@miguelizo1 Yeah I hear you they are awful tell me why I ordered some garlic bread sticks and they gave me breadsticks with melted(and burnt) cheese on it no seasoning just cheese and bread. Plus Dominos is to small I mean there large looks like a small now. Thankfully a friend of mine told me about Marino's Pizza its all I ever get when I want Pizza and Little Caesar's when I want that Extra Most Bestest.

I work at Little Caesars and the cheese is the most expensive ingredient, and I'm always getting on the new hire's case about using too much of it and wasting money. So it's interesting that we are running the Extra Most Bestest Campaign, but it makes sense that it's a hit because everyone likes their extra cheese. If anyone is wondering, I do recommend the thin crust pizza, it has been my favorite menu item. But don't be surprised that you can probably eat the whole thing if you're not careful.

We lost Little Ceasers for most of the 2000s until around 2010 or so. Now we have 4 within a short driving range. They always had good "cheap" pizza. While there are other places like Georgios and some other $5 pizza places, they never beat LC. And I will say LC has a amazing Stuff Crust. I'd say its better than Pizza Huts.

I think the fact they were associated with Kmart also hurt sales. If nobody's going into Kmart to shop, then nobody is buying pizza. Once they started to close locations in defunct Kmarts, I'm sure it helped.

Dude they're getting incredible BIG here in Mexico, their pizza is decent and they're way cheaper than Pizza Hut and Domino's and that's what it counts on the Mexico market. Their locals have queques almost all the time and whenever you see a person walking in the streets with a pizza box it's either Little Caesar's or a local city franchise.

@@francogunasekera1315 Make your dough fresh every day, no exceptions. I work at a lil caesars currently and even if it's cheap pizza we still make the dough everyday. It goes the farthest in making a product people will enjoy. Following that, do your own topping prep rather than buying pre-cut frozen and waiting for it to thaw - although this is acceptable for meat toppings if that's all that is available to you. Like with any food what makes pizza good is the effort that goes into it and the quality of the ingredients. As far as running the business, keep the different number of toppings as low as reasonable to reduce spoilage and waste and give pizza away for free the day you open to get foot traffic and give people a good experience that would make them want to come back. Everything else is just a lot of labor, cleaning, and startup capital.
