I picked up Spirit of Adventure in the summer of '92 for $2.99 in a bargain bin. The box art is what initially sold me. If you were already used to the combat & exploration style of a game like Wasteland or The Bard's Tale, SoA was very simple to pick up & play with a minimal learning curve. The user manual was probably the most detailed one I encountered until a few years later with Daggerfall. The developers did a great job at making it more than just a hack & slash adventure. Charm spells are very useful, especially if created with a Mind Rune. One word of caution. SoA uses the old-school D&D mechanic of haste spells aging the target by one year each time they're applied. There is no slow spell to turn back the clock. So hasting a fighter to get an edge should be use sparingly.

RPG’s on PC vs RPG’s on console. Its fun to see what different playstyles was popular on the exact same genre. On one hand we have nes, snes and Sega etc that had the style like final fantasy, breath of fire, dragon quest, chronotrigger etc. Top down strategy rpg’s And on PC we have these games that you just showcased, FPS. Most of the time RTS games. The RPG genre is one i never really spent time on. On a seperate note. Was it eligal for adventures to wear clothes in “spirit of adventure”?

I've a separate best RPGs or something like that video (or videos, I've done so many I honestly don't remember), that shows off some of the best games in the genre. Also, yeah, consoles and PC banked on entirely different kind of an RPG. And it makes it all so interesting. I should really get into Genesis/SNES at some point. Oh, and all adventurers have it in their contracts. There's a separate clause for clothes or not clothes. They just gotta read the small print.

Just the 90s for CRPG's was incredible. Something that was definitely lost in the "console focussed" mid 2000's and onwards. Both DOS and Windows 95/98 titles are remembered fondly. Infinity engine games and the original Fallout series, Diablo (if you can call those RPG's) etc. And also early D&D Dos games, Realms Of Arkania series, etc.
@OldAndNewVideoGames3 ай бұрын
Yup. And I think that over the years we've moved from calling games like Diablo hack'n'slashes into action RPGs. Which would be something no one would think of back then, as it would be "a disservice to true RPGs", but since most genres take bits and pieces from RPGs now (ever racers do), we're used to it being its own subgenre.

@@OldAndNewVideoGames Absolutely. Diablo certainly "felt" like an RPG, and it's statistics did matter despite there being just a handful. I remember when Icewind Dale II got slated by some critics for being a "Combat based dungeon crawler" as opposed to it's predecessor or Baldurs Gate, as it focused more on combat than narrative. Bloodwych is unknown to me. Looks interesting for ‘89 though. I’m a bit confused by the aspect ratio of the footage here? Looks like it’s ultra wide? 8:12 certainly looks like Arnie? From his Mr. Universe days. Ah yes, remember when game devs didn’t care about copyright & just used any image or especially audio they wanted? Barbarian, on the Amiga at least, used a bunch of sound clips taken from the movie adaptation of Red Sonja. 😄 I don’t know Darklands & it’s kind of ugly for a game you speak highly of? Superhero League of Hoboken does look original & unique? I do know Stonekeep because of the 3D 1st person navigation but I never got in to it. Speaking of 3D navigation Shadows Over Riva did it better but I just couldn’t get in to the non 1st person parts. I do know of Amulets & Armour & it was well thought through but again (& yes I know this is just me) I just couldn’t get in to it, even though I love the Elder Scrolls games. Well I think you knew this wasn’t going to be my video but I appreciate you educating me on these games, thanks.

Brace yourself! It's not widescreen at all. Bloodwych could be played in local co-op, and then each of the players would get that wide screen, one on top of another on a single monitor. So, when you played alone, you only got one. Darklands is the best game you've not played. If you're into RPGs. This one's text heavy so not sure if you'd enjoy it, but it's sooooo worth the time and effort. It's really a hidden gem, and arguably the best game in the video. Yeah, I kinda figured RPGs are not your cup of tea. But the next one will be turn based strategies, and I've even more B Team of games there than here. Ooh, nice games! You say these are not the most popular? They all have something interesting going for them. I've never imported a character or party to any game. Are they often fully "leveled up" characters or can they also start from scratch (loincloth, club and grow leg hair potion recipe only)? I think my gravestone will say "she's not here". As in, no need to come visit my grave, since there's nothing there that is "me". I had a great uncle who wrote little poems for gravestones. He did one for himself too. Oh. Now I understand the story behind the character named Sir Poopy Pants. Poor guy... Someone give him a nice cup of tea. Pst. Do you know how to get the recipe for that "unsmell my feel" potion? :D
@OldAndNewVideoGames3 ай бұрын
Oh, they are definitely not bad. Not saying that. They're just not the A-Team members for their respective years in the genre. They're the median choices. And average for their genres. Back then, actually many RPGs that were series allowed you to move your party between them, and more often than not, they moved with all they had. Sometimes something was missing, like an uber strong item or something, but generally speaking it was a common practice. I like the "she's not here" thing. Makes sense, on many levels. Unsmell my feet potion? It's actually pretty easy, though it's not a potion per say, but balm actually. You take one part soap or shower gel and nine parts water, mix, place on smelly feet and rub in energetically for a minute or two, rinse and the smell should be gone. If necessary repeat until the effect persists.
@TeaAndFloppyDisks3 ай бұрын
@@OldAndNewVideoGames No, I don't assume you mean the games are bad, because they are obviously not. SHOCKINGLY i do happen to have Bloodwych, it was one of the big RPG bundles i got from GoG at one time or another. Not so surprisingly i am unbelivibly bad at the game, like many older dungeon crawlers from first person view it has this initial learning hump i never did overcome. That being said the treasonous politician i mean antagonist ... same thing realy, dose sound very much like most of my own government so i do get the urge to introduce him to concept of gravity.. preferably whilst on edge of rather high and steep cliff or tall building with good hard ground. It was a good tradition my people once had. (darklands) apparently i also own this one, do not remember playing either wtf was my RPG loving past self even doing i can not tell you. tho it appears i have qutie good chunk of generaly liked games... just not enough (was also hoping to get gold box collection that GoG recently had but i think its like 4 games only which is definitively NOT defintiive collection of the gold box i was hoping for, i shalt vitualy box anyone who'd even claim it so). (SuperHoboCan league of ordinarily extraordinary gentlemen) i own it, remember playing it and apparently did not find it entertaining enough to give it more than hour. *shrugs* strange almost as if charts and graphs are not something i find appealing. (Stonekeep) now there is a game that is simultaniously great and terrifyingly bad... i love it, perplexingly so since i am horrible at some of its puzzles. but i mena fairy songs are fantastic, the disturbing sounds of eating and the fact that you begin game by escaling death only to go and voulentarily die (well separate spirit from body but you know thats death)... the sounds in general i find very good as well as decent story. levels are on the other hand the worst part of the game, partly because of repetition and partly because of repetition (i know i said it twice i am making a point here). Still shame that the devs were nto given enough whatever they needed to make later two thirds of the game sparkle, this did come around lands of lore BTW signifficantly superior take on this type of RPG :/ (yes i own 3 lor games too). (A&A) i have never heard of this game ever... very interesting tho 97 is bit late. we already had fallout than... my all time favourite RPG game albeit from different perspective (yes RPG was conffussing term even as far back as 90s). still shame to see allright game get nothing. Ouf bombing it did? that is sad... i do enjoy this particular peek into little different groups of games... if it keeps doing bad maybe some alteration of format could be handy? something like pick a year with its biggest hit in given genre and explore what some runneruppers did in same time that was interesting or worth nothing, maybe even mechanics that did not come into popularity untill years later (a reocurring theme as seen in for example darkstone and later dungeon siege capitalising on that). Whilst i can not do much i can thank you for making these thusfar two videos they are kind of stuff i likes personaly and want you to know that even if not that popular i at least enjoyed it.

It's that attention span of mine, which was even worse when I was a kid. xD And Darklands is amazing! Well worth the time. Wish you'd seen me playing Football Manager, that's like literally just charts and graphs and I'm loving it. xD Don't worry about the video bombing, I enjoyed making it, and also reading the comments. Also, I think it's my reason, as I released it on Saturday, and all Saturday releases of mine historically don't do that good. Waiting a day would be a better choice, but I usually always rush to release when I can.

I mean you CAN record the gameplay footage yourself can you not? i assume that could get some chuckles if its just spreadsheets and overly excited man yapping over them (i mean there is this Sims3 patch notes that undeniably legendary read because voiceover guy cracks like 5 seconds in and just keeps having absolute blast). That being writtne i suspect its 1st april notes, because that school not letting anyone leave sounds like something they'd correct rather than just slap into notes shrugging.
