LITTLE MARTIN LX1E - The Ultimate Boat, Van, and Travel Guitar! UNBOXING & REVIEW

The last few weeks I have been on the hunt for a guitar that best fits my lifestyle. I needed something small so I could store it anywhere on the sailboat and in the van. I needed it to be tough because I knew it is going to have a rough life ahead of it. I needed it to stand up to humidity, moisture, and temperature changes that we experience on the water. Oh and I wanted it to not sound like shit or feel like a toy guitar you get at Walmart. And I think I finally found it.
The Little Martin LX1E
After sifting through a ton of different options, it finally came down to the Little Martin. It fits the bill perfectly and sounds great. Super easy to hide in the boat or the van and comes with a backpack style gig bag too so you can fit right in with all the losers, I mean “travelers”, in Ocean Beach.

So far the guitar has exceeded expectations in quality and sound. Does not feel like I’m downgrading guitars, just downsizing.
I am no great guitarist, but I do enjoy playing and I think even a better guitarist would have a hard time arguing with this guitar, even up against standard sized guitars priced around $400. Really hard to beat for that price.
The main competitor that I found for this guy was the Baby Taylor, but some insider info from someone I know that used to work at Taylor Guitars led me to believe that the Martin is a higher quality build. BUT if I was willing to spend a couple hundred bucks more and get a slightly bigger but still pretty small guitar, I would probably be leaning toward the Martin Dreadnaught JR or the Taylor GS Mini. However, those two beautiful guitars are all wood and overtime would succumb to the moisture that surrounds our floating house all day.
My only con that I have found so far with this guitar is that, even though I have the electronics, Martin decided not to put a built in tuner on the guitar. Kinda sad, but not at all a deal breaker for me. Also I think I wouldn’t be devastated if the scale length was a touch longer.

I've got the Backpacker and love it. I bought it specifically to sit in my recliner and strum/practice. It's small form is perfect for that. I bet it'd make a great boat guitar as well. I put the Silk & Steel's on it, and that removed alot of the "tinny" banjo sound and increased the warm bottom end. You might try them if you want to take the edge off.

As a former sailboater, I agree, the LX1 is a good choice, for its size but also that it's mostly made of synthetics, laminates, etc. Still sounds good and is playable. Calling it a "travel" guitar misrepresents its value.

Your you tube videos are very had to find. Because I regularly watch other sailing videos, while I was surfing videos, you tube brought one of your videos up, I watched it, decided to add On The Docks to my subscription list but had moved away from that video and using the search function, I couldn't find On the Docks. Finally found it using the history function.

Very hard to play bare chords past the 7th fret maybe the action adjustments are needed on the factory setups

Yes. I don't play barre chords that high but, but the "factory setup" is garbage.

I did. They are very comparable, but the materials in the Martin are mostly synthetic so they don’t absorb any moisture which is necessary on a boat.

How tall are you ? do you have big thick fingers ? how are you able to get your finger tips in the positions to make chords and not be touching adjacent strings that you are not supposed to be touching ? I feel like my finger tips are too big for this guitar, but I don't understand. I am 5'5 and my hands are not big.

@@drunkviggo7263 I’m 6’2. This guitar actually has a pretty wide neck for its size. Being able to get your fingers in the right position for the chords is all just a matter of practice! This is a great guitar to learn on and grow into and take anywhere, it’s just a matter of practicing and working those fingers! Thanks!
