I think this a perfect example of lovecraftian horror. It doesn't have any of its trappings, like tentacle and madness. However, it perfectly encapsulates the fear of the unknown. What is the meatball man, what does he do? We do not know, and are all the more terrified imagining it. This is simultaneously one of the most effective pieces of horror and humor I've ever. And, amazingly, both aspects, despite being so different, actually enhance each other.

I think a factor that makes the meatball man so scary is the fact that he’s moving perpendicular to Runmo’s plane of movement and takes up the entire exposed area. Because of this, there’s no way to distance yourself from him other than leaving the room. Once he arrives, it’s over.

I feel like this scene helps convey Little Runmo's biggest character flaw; they lets fear dictate a lot of what he does. They were so close to those lives, closer than the exit was! But because they are so scared of the Meatball Man they ran away. Almost all of Runmo's actions were done out of fear, too.

I agree - it was definitely an intentional choice to cut from the full length of the room (so we can see he's about to reach the halfway point) to MM and then back to Runmo just as he passes a sign (so we become aware that he's _over halfway there_ without it having to be directly shoved in our faces that "he's turning back even though it's easier to keep going at that point")

The Meatball Man is made all the more creepy because you don’t know what he would do if he caught you. I’m not sure he would be quite as creepy if you knew what he did when you’re caught by him. It’s that uncertainty- that fear of the unknown- that makes The Meatball Man so intimidating. Most horror movies explain what the monster is and what it does by the end of the movie, very rarely do you finish a horror movie without knowing nearly everything there is to know about the monster. They fail to understand the pure terror of the unknown, the horror of that which remains unseen. More horror movies need to take note of The Meatball Man and other creatures like him.
