Fun Fact: At the Oscar ceremony Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops came on stage as himself and sang the song with a puppet Audrey II and dancers behind him. I wasn't sure how they would perform it for the Oscars, but this turned out to be fun to watch. It was great to see Levi Stubbs out in front so that viewers could connect him as the voice of Audrey II. There is a video on YT of the petformance.

Original 1960 movie had a sad ending , if you have seen it , whole movie was done for a bet , Roger Corman claimed he can do a horror movie in few days , it took less than 3 days to do the original . Both Jack Nicholson and Stallone started their talking roles with Roger Corman . Jack Nicholson plays dentist customer role in original .

I'm with you. The director's cut ending was based on the stage play and, watching it one night after I'd watched the happy ending, I realized that at the end of a stage play the cast comes out and takes a bow so things still end on a high note. You don't get that with a movie. Although I do love the song "Don't Feed The Plants".

I’m not much of a musical guy, but this one (and a few others) has a special place in my heart. Ellen Green should have been a superstar and it’s a crime that she didn’t star in more films following this one. I love this movie, it's my favorite musical movie. I don't think I can pick a favorite scene or song, it's just all so great. I do prefer the theatrical ending to the original though. This is mostly because I suffer from depression. Seeing Audrey and Seymour, who have both led downtrodden lives on Skid Row, finally finding happiness with each other only to be killed one after the other and thus never actually breaking free from Skid Row...it just depresses me even more. Though I do appreciate the world destruction bit and all the effort put into it.

This film is one of those special ones that I can watch over and over again without ever getting tired of it. The music is absolutely fantastic. It was utterly delightful to watch Emily enjoy it as much as I do. But I prefer the happy ending. It simply must be that Seymour and Audrey live happily ever after. And there's still a little hint of the original ending with the new baby Audrey II and the "Here we go again" style of ending that so many horror movies use.

A couple of tidbits you missed. The alloys used to create the internal structure of Audrie 2 were developed by Nasa scientists. Puppeteering the plant took (I think) 56 miles of cable and maintaining its glossy sheen required dozens of gallons of KY Jelly. Finally, it's traditional in the stage play for the voice actor of Audrie 2 to play a bum on the street during the Skid Row musical number, and that happens in the movie, too. That one African-American guy who hits his notes WAY harder than he needs to, that's Levi Stubbs.

The dark ending honestly fits better with the actual stage play because Seymour isn't the best guy. Although Audrey II scared the crap out of me as a kid, I loved this movie and the songs. I remember in the early 2000's my I bought a DVD and watched it my friend who hadn't seen it thinking it was a straight horror movie. When the movie started and the first notes hit I said "By the way, this is a musical". The look on my friends face was priceless, he still ended up liking it. Edit: The creators and composers of the musical version, Al Menken and Howard Ashman, went on to kickstart the Disney animation movie reneissance by making the songs for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Beauty and the Beast. From a flesh eating plant to a siging mermaid, that's quite the jump.

There are five major songs in the final version of *Aladdin* (1992). Three have lyrics by Howard Ashman ("Arabian Nights," "Friend Like Me," and "Prince Ali"), and two have lyrics by Tim Rice ("One Jump Ahead," and "A Whole New World"), though Rice also wrote lyrics for a brief reprise of Ashman's "Prince Ali." The most heart-breaking of the unused songs by Ashman is "Proud of Your Boy."

We put on Little Shop at the local theater in Meridian about three years ago. I played the narrator, the radio DJ, the drunk on the street (singing, "That's when you go" before "Downtown"), and the salesman at the end who unleashes Audrey II on the world. Jason Clayton played Seymour, LaQuinton Holliday was Audrey II (and he was flippin' awesome(, Greg Snowden was Mr. Mushnik, Clint Brown KILLED it as The Dentist, and Amy McMinn played Audrey. Amy's father passed away during the play's run, and Amy left to be with her family. Bella Pickard, who was all of sixteen, stepped in and took over for Amy on three hours' notice, and she KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. Eagan Tilghman (son of Todd Tilghman) did the production design. The guy was all of 18 years old, and his set design was a jaw-dropper. Also, the "official" Audrey II prop would have been way too expensive, so Eagan designed one from scratch... and it was MUCH better than what we would have bought. You may have guessed from my rambling, but we were all VERY proud of this one. By the way, Seymour was a bit darker as a character (Mr. Mushnik was shown to be a decent guy, and Seymour cold-bloodedly sent him to get et), so the original dark ending was more fitting. That play was an absolute BLAST.

My other role was Bernstein from NBC, who does a verse on The Meek Shall Inherit, a song that got mostly cut from the film where Seymour agonises over the fame he's now gained at the cost of human life and his own principles - footage of a longer filmed version does exist out there but it's kinda low quality I believe. Also, that number was one of the hardest to get right in rehearsals for our show, since we were working with imperfectly timed/lengthed backing tracks that we had to tweek, and the poor Chorus Girls really struggled with the harmonies, especially at the end - after the last big top Cs I'm sure I saw one of the girls leave the stage trying not to burst into tears of embarassment and frustration.

This one will always hold a special place in my heart. I was actually in a production of "Little Shop" back in high school and we were lucky enough to have such a great administration that we were able to get funding to rent one of the actual Audrey II puppets used in the professional touring productions. It has to be one of the most memorable shows I was ever a part of.

I first saw this film as a kid as soon as it was released on home video (my parents practically lived at blockbuster and curtis mathis). fell in LOVE with it. it was, literally and without a doubt, my favorite film of all time at that point, and remained so for quite some time. even to this day its one of my top favorites. Mean Green Mother (the theatrical version) is a regular listen just on its own. and Skid Row is a very close second. I didn't know about the original cut until frank oz's dvd commentary for it for the movie. and since I LOVE extended cuts of movies, esp since they are almost always the better versions, i sought out the original ending (at the time only available as black and white leaked versions on youtube, but later color versions showed up so i got to see those too) loved it, esp the destruction sequence. wanted badly to see a directors cut to see the whole film together, and to my glee one was announced a few years later. I was SO hyped for it. you have no idea. when it finally came out, i grabbed it IMMEDIATELY. I watched it THAT DAY. and I hated it. that utterly shocked me. its not that i love downer endings or wanted to see them die, but i did think the scenes were handled well and such, plus i knew it was coming, i had seen the scenes already. as deleted scenes its great. but as a full cut together movie it just didn't work for me. it just felt off. and yeah, their chemistry is a major reason. suddenly she's dead, and he's on the roof trying to kill himself. he does try to fight it, but loses and gets eaten too. I have no problem watching it on it own, and still love the invasion bits, but i'm glad they cut it.

Frank said in the commentary that the invasion sequence alone took more then half their entire effects budget. and you can see it. its one of the most impressive effects sequences from an 80's film. interestingly, i have been huge effects geek my whole life. my parents love films and esp filmmaking. we watched all kinds of movies together (even r rated horror films), but we also watched alot of behind the scenes for film. before the age of ten i could see an effect in a movie and tell you how it was done. But this film always eluded me. I could never figure out how it was done. it was too early for cgi, to quick and fluid for puppets, too much interaction for miniature and forced perspective, too good looking to be stop motion. it wasn't until the commentary that i didn't see until the late 2000's that learned about about the filming at half speed thing. never seen it used anywhere else (outside of a tiktok video. lol) fun personal fact: this was only movie my parents ever banned me from watching. not because it was violent or anything, but because I watched it so many times i was wearing out the tape and they were getting sick of hearing the songs. this was my Frozen. lol

I was in the pit for two different stage productions of this musical. In both locales, the stage directors had to remind the conductors to limit the meter on Feed Me. It is such an absolute blast to play… but the puppeteers could not articulate fast enough when we would inevitably rush the piece. For the latter, we ended up compromising by upping the meter 20% and adding improv sections for the curtain call version.

I know this video's a year old, but I have something I desperately want to say. So, the songs for this musical were done by an iconic songwriting duo, and I haven't seen anyone bring this up. The screenplay and the lyrics were written by Howard Ashman, who also wrote the lyrics to Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and about half of Aladdin. He couldn't finish Aladdin because he passed away tragically young due to AIDS. (Fun fact: he also wrote the original treatment for Aladdin and pitched it to Disney, so it's because of him really that they made that movie.) The music for the songs was written by Alan Menken, who did the music for basically every Disney renaissance movie. I say the music for the songs because he had never scored a film when this was being made, and he didn't feel confident in that, so the score was written by another composer. After that composer was nominated for best score for this film, Menken was like "Well, I could've done that" so he scored his first film, The Little Mermaid, and won an oscar for it. Menken/Ashman also won best song for the Little Mermaid, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the original stage play, the ending still involved world domination but wasn't nearly as drawn out as in the movie. So I suspect she'd love the stage play!

Am I remembering correctly that the original Roger Corman movie the Seymour character is getting away with murdering people by feeding them to the plant and that at the end Seymour is implicated in the murders because the plant produces blooms that look like the faces of the murder victims?

The speculation that curtain calls made a difference onstage has a point, but I also think that the stage musical was done in such a (deliberately) low-budget scruffy stylized way that we didn't take the deaths that seriously -- it was all spoofy fun. At the final blackout, vines unrolled from the auditorium ceiling to tickle our heads, and we all laughed and applauded. Onscreen, though I was disappointed at the changed ending I could sort of understand it; it all seemed more "real" and I cared more about Seymour and Audrey. I also remember hearing that another proposed casting for Audrey in the movie was Madonna. We're so lucky that they ended up with Ellen Greene.

Absolutely love this film. There's actually nothing bad I can say about it. Everything was just absolutely spot on. Cast, effects, music... I've got the soundtrack on regular rotation. Ending wise, it's the original for me. But I do appreciate the happy ending too. I do have castings of an Audrey II (it's the one from the radio studio) that I really need to clean up and get assembled and painted in the full hand puppet. Although with Halloween just gone, maybe for next year.

I think they could have put the original ending in (just the world domination part) as a dream sequence or an imagining of Audrey II's plans.

That's actually a great idea. They could have put it in right after Audrey 2 pulls the ceiling down on Seymour and then after it's done cut back to Seymour reaching through the rubble and grabbing the power cable.

In the “Da-Doo” chorus singers, one of them is British singer/dancer Danny John-Jules, better known as the actor who played “Cat” in the BBC Sci-Fi comedy series Red Dwarf I believe he’s the one in the dark red jacket, closest to Rick Moranis.

I love this movie with the theaterical ending. It's still bittersweet in its way with that little plant. That said, I've seen crystal clear HD versions of the "real" ending and have heard it's that way on the Blu-ray version where you can pick the ending. 🐾🐾🍻

If you guys didn't know, Audry's speaking voice is the basis for Cow from Cow and Chicken, according to the voice actor Charlie Adler. He also voices Chicken and The Red Guy. You may also recognize him as Buster Bunny on Tiny Toon Adventures, and a bunch of other shows.
