One thing that the "love conquers all ending" maintains at least is the audrey 2, growing in the garden smirking at the audience at the end. the seeds are sewn, in preserving the american dream, that greed, that hunger, that system is still maintained and its only a matter of time before it bears fruit once more.
@Inlelendri4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, yes! That's actually why I love that ending as much as the original. It's much more insidious and, imho, it's effective precisely because we think it's all safe now. One of the few 'or is it?' endings that works, for me at least. Thank you for phrasing that so well :)

Spoilers for people who haven't seen the movie nor watched the video? I'm surprised that you didn't mention that there is a Lil'Audrey II that survived in the Theatrical ending. If read thru the capitalism metaphor, it could be viewed that even if you can over come capitalism from consuming you it is still there and because you fed it, it was able to propagate and survive. It may have just been "you got your happy ending, but that doesn't mean it will stay happy!" jab at the test screeners, tho.

This kind of thing is exactly why I hate test screenings. I think far more movie endings have likely been ruined by test audiences than actually improved. "Probably a little bit too much for an audience expecting something more along the lines of Rocky Horror" Rocky Horror ends with most of the characters dead, the villains rejoicing their victory, and the main couple robbed of innocence in every possible way. It always blows my mind how many people forget that the entire second half of the film is a slow downward spiral into tragedy and death. (Note: I loved this video, 100% agreed on almost everything, literally howled with laugher at 7:26, and subscribed before I'd even finishing watching, I just needed to point out the irony here)
@aliceswayer99794 жыл бұрын
exactly! in the original stage show it gets even darker with brad and janet singing one of my favorite songs of the whole show called "superheros" wich is pretty short, but still makes everything a lot more intense (i've even seen a production, it's on yt btw, were they almost break up and it's really heartbreaking). But then again, if you go see rocky horror you always have the fun cutain call and maybe even an encore wich cheers you up again, wich i think is one of the reasons why they cut it from the movie. It is one of the reasons why test audiences didn't like the original ending of little shop, while they were fine with it when it was performed on stage.
@MatsudaYouIdiotProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@aliceswayer9979 My shadowcast always performs to the UK cut of Rocky Horror Picture Show, which includes "Superheroes" (it was only omitted in the US version of the film). And I've seen the stage version you're referring to where B&J almost break up at the end (the 2015 Playhouse Theatre proshot), I was actually thinking about it when writing this comment! Also, if you're familiar with the (first) planned sequel for the film, "Rocky Horror Shows His Heels," the plot was going to involve Brad and Janet being married, but so messed up by that night at the castle that they're constantly fighting, and Brad ends up leaving her for a relationship with Dr. Scott.
@aliceswayer99794 жыл бұрын
@@MatsudaYouIdiotProductions shit ur right I totally forgot about that 🙈 I wonder why it's cut from the version I have tho since I'm not American 🤔 Also yes, that is exactly the production I was talking about 😅🙈 But OMG no I hadn't heard of that version of the sequel before 😳😂 I only know "shock treatment" but... that sounds interesting as well 😂👌🏻
@MatsudaYouIdiotProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@aliceswayer9979 I think the US cut is more well-known, even outside the US. Try looking for a DVD/Blu-ray that offers both versions (I know the 40th Anniversary Edition does, for example). So, the interesting thing is that several sequels were planned before "Shock Treatment" was made. The first was "Rocky Horror Shows His Heels," which involved Rocky surviving the attack by Riff, and reviving Frank via Frankenstein-like methods. It also portrayed Janet being pregnant with Frank's child and the entire town of Denton falling under Frank's spell. A bunch of songs were written (most of which were later used for "Shock Treatment"), plus a rough draft of the proposed script. The problem was, Tim Curry declined to reprise his role as Frank, and Jim Sharman (the director of the original film), didn't want to do a sequel. Because of this, the idea was dropped. In "Revenge of the Old Queen," which was to be another direct sequel, Riff Raff was trying to conceal Frank's murder from Frank's mother, who it turns out is the queen of Transsexual Transylvania, making Frank rightful heir to the throne. It also involved Riff strangling Magenta in a fit of jealousy on their way back from Earth (but continuing to have, er, "relations" with her corpse). This one also ended up being scrapped. Then there was "The Brad and Janet Show," which revised the songs originally written for "Rocky Horror Shows His Heels," and was meant to be an alternate canon to "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in which Brad and Janet never went to the castle. It was supposed to star Tim Curry as Brad Majors and Farley Flavors, with Susan Sarandon reprising her role as Janet. But Tim was worried about his ability to play Brad (he reportedly didn't think he could do a convincing American accent), and Susan said she'd only play Janet again for $1 million! When the Screen Actors Guild went on strike, preventing the production team from shooting outside, the idea for "The Brad and Janet Show" was re-written into what eventually became "Shock Treatment" (which set the entire story inside a television studio). It's all super fascinating. You can read more about the scrapped projects on the Rocky Horror Wiki: rockyhorror.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Failed_projects

Great video, I watched the movie. I knew about there being two endings, and when my family watched it and watched everyone die, my parents were upset and complained and wished they had the version with the happy ending, but I think the ending where everyone dies is the more logical ending. The happy ending feels like a copout that completely erases any kind of moral or political message that the film has. I should probably watch that movie again, I might appreciate it more fully this time around.

Honestly I think the theatrical ending could've worked if it wasn't presented as "fact" within the movie's universe. I feel like you can see how cheap and paper thin it is through the set, which is p notable in a movie that is already very conspicuous with its artificial space. The implication of it as a fantasy / delusion / death dream within the film itself might've honestly felt like an even bleaker place to leave off, especially if that last little Audrey II was still present to signal to the audience that even within this fantasy within a fantasy, the creeping vines of capital still grow.

This is awesome!!! One of my fav films and theatre pieces in general, Audrey 2 is probably my favorite villian, at least in the theatre world. I also find it interesting how they (seymour and audrey 2) kill people who are greedy, at least in the beginning. The selfish, abusive boyfriend (who works as a dentist, a somewhat well-off profession) and Mushnik, who seals his fate after wanting to blackmail Seymour for the plant so he can have all this captialism for himself. Finally, in the stage production, Seymour, as the fame and fortune has corrupted him and turned him into what he hated. I think it goes to show how paradoxical characters both the plant and Seymour are, they kill the bad and corrupted but are corrupted themselves. I think Audrey represents the heart of the show, as she is saved from the plant but then (at least in the stage production) giving herself to the planet for Seymours happiness. Overall great video, and very well done!! Sorry for the ramble!

But when I came back to it as an adult, especially when listening to the 2004 Broadway revival with Kerry Butler KILLING IT as Audrey, it finally hit me that of COURSE Audrey dreams of something like Leavittown: Skid Row sucks, so somewhere that's just safe and pretty and uniform has a very strong appeal.

I do want to defend the theatrical ending, which makes the situation less absurd in a way, and therefore more realistic and in a way, better. Seymour never wanted to sell the plant or let it spread beforehand, so his refusal and defiance now are reasonable enough. Standing up against a massive systematic, I mean, horticultural threat is something we should cheer and want to see as possible, if dangerous. Making the situation too bleak and hopeless makes it feel there's no chance to rip the menace out, so who cares? It makes it more a monster movie with a polemic and less an instructional guidebook to fighting evil capitalistic plants. Lastly, the ending with the white picket fence is overshadowed by the seedling in the garden, which is a perfect metaphor for how this system works, and it carries the implicit instruction to kill the damn plant now! I think it's also more clearly not a literal ending, so the question is less what Seymour should do but what you would do, dear viewer, if you saw such a plant in your garden. Because killing the plant is possible, and because the plant is small, what we need to do is work together, get rid of them, and do it before they take root. That's a perfect way to illustrate how to actually defeat a lot of bad things, and only having endings where your characters die will shrink the universe of possibilities for people in the audience. People need to know that they're supposed to get rid of the plants, not feed them, not fear them, and not forget that they're part of a community. Anyway, I think the original ending is less thoughtful and less thought provoking. Theatrical ending is best ending.

I'm still disappointed that I didn't get cast as Audrey II in my local community college's production. Granted, that was right before the plague hit, so it wouldn't have gone through anyway...

I hadn't thought about this movie in years. The DVD copy I bought back in middle school happened to be one of the misprints with the original ending instead of the theatrical one, so I never even knew the happy ending existed. 🤣

None of the endings are satisfying enough on their own, this one time where you want to see the original ending because it's awesome, and it continues the themes the story was working through. But then you need to see the theatrical ending because in the 1986 movie the plant is so much of a presence and a classical movie monster that you do want to see him defeated, and though Seymour didn't deserve it, it's great to see Audrey get her happy ending. You also might want to watch the original 1960 versio because while it doesn't have songs, it has lots of comedy and a really great performance of Mr. Mushnick. But if nothing else, check out the final song of the stage play, which plays during the original 1986 ending but gets upstaged by the destruction, and sound effects. It drives home the point more directly, and is chilling. It breaks the 4th wall, addressing the audience "If we fight them we still have a chance, but please whatever they offer you,.. Don't Feed the Plants.

Man, I love that movie. I have no idea when I saw it as a kid, but it's such a classic. Also, Thought Slime sent me. Great Eyeball suggestion!

I have to rebut your point on the ending- there is an Audrey 3 on the edge of Seymour’s lawn. It’s actually really foreboding. Audrey will come back.

I saw this at the movie theatre back when it was released, and many more times after a home video release. I even had the soundtrack on cassette for some reason.

A few days before Thought Slime's video, i suggested another KZbinr make a video on Little Shop through the lens of labour. Wow. I played Orin Scrivello, DDS, in high school. In the stage version, the sexual energy is meant to be emphatic, so Steve Martin did a great job.

Holy effing s. I never knew about that alternate (true) ending to one of my favorite movies as a kid. Consider my eyeballs captured.

I felt compelled to come here, I don't know why, it's all so foggy, but I think there was an eyeball involved. This video is great. Hold up while I binge through the rest of your stuff.
