One of the best (and most expensive) deleted ending in the history of cinema. It is a pity that the audience of the '80s could not appreciate such a wonderful ending. www.miguelgalvanreina.com

Even it they went for the happy ending, I don't see why they could not incorporate this footage in some other way. For example, after we see the second Audrey II plant in Seymour's new garden smiling at the camera, we cut to the credits. During the credits, the same music and footage for "Don't Feed the Plants" is played, but occasionally cut together in ways that make it look like a Public Service Announcement. That way, you can still get your footage of Audrey II being sold around America, city destruction scenes, and lyrics warning us not to feed our "plants," but it would be left ambiguous as to whether the invasion really happened or if it was just a PSA to warn us of what might happen (in a similar manner as how America sometimes releases incredibly dramatic PSAs about certain illegal drugs, etc.).

This ending makes far more sense - Seymour actually pays the price for his Faustian pact instead of getting the girl and living happily ever after, which goes against the entire point of the story.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 7 жыл бұрын
What if the alternate ending, which would appease the test audiences, went for a compromise between the two versions? At first, it would look like Seymour successfully killed the plant and saved his girlfriend to live happily ever after. Right when the audience thinks Seymour learned the error of his ways and stopped the alien just in time however, you find out that the same businessman already came along to collect Audrey II's saplings to create a new business, which Seymour now has no control over. The same ending as the original would play out, only with Seymour and Audrey unsuccessfully trying to make people boycott the plants on TV and singing their lines from the Broadway version of "Don't Feed The Plants," while protesting. Then, while the invasion is happening, we see Seymour witnessing the carnage from a distance and realizing that the consequences are catching up to him, it is still his fault for letting Audrey II live long enough to produce seeds, and all he can do is watch on unable to really fix it. Would this kind of ending work decently in your opinion? That way, all of the same themes of greed, disordered ambition, and blind consumerism are left intact. Plus, the film could add these other morals to its commentary: It can be possible to learn the error of your ways and turn your life around before it gets even worse; however, it is best not to make bargains with greed in the first place, since your actions can still have a negative cascade effect on future generations, even you yourself get out unharmed; it is up to each individual person not to give in to those vices since these temptations are everywhere and will always exist; while some people can resist these temptations, others will not develop any such moral compass, making this a constant trial throughout each generation that we will always be fighting.

actually it wasn't a 100% happy ending with no consequence. Remember the final shot in that ending was of an Audrey 2 hiding in the garden, hinting that even having stopped the original back in the shop there were still others out there and the threat wasn't over.

Who says aliens would have the same standard for what is a male or female voice ; p That said I'm guessing since it's a plant it may be both, since some plants are. This ending is AWESOME!! Not only is this true to the original musical, I think this offers a better lesson. Sometimes life doesn't throw you a happy ending. Besides, Seymour's actions had absolutely no reprocussions in the "Happy Ending." He let innocent people (as horrible as they were) die, and he still ends up with the girl at the end. I'm happy that this ending finally got the treatment it deserves.

OBJECTION!!!! The character of Seymour Contradicts his movie counterpart. Here I present the evidence, of in the play, all the characters WERE bad people. While in the movie, Seymour IS NOT a bad person. The play forced you to root for the plants, as all the characters were bad people. But in the movie! Seymour and Audrey are NOT bad people. Audrey and Seymour are both innocent, and made relatively good decisions. If you had seen the play! You would know you were SUPPOSED to root for the plant (no pun intended), but in the movie you were supposed to root for Seymour, the hero. In the play, Seymour is an anti-hero. But in the movie! He IS the hero. He chopped up a body. He didn't kill anyone. In the play he in cold blood kills people, and barely shows remorse. Obviously a contradiction...
@michaelbeaudoin1518
@michaelbeaudoin1518 9 жыл бұрын
I have seen the live musical and the movie. In both versions, Seymour was tempted to do bad things in order to get what he wanted. He was definitely not completely innocent. For example, in both the play and the movie, he tricks Mr. Mushnik to look in the plant saying that he put the money in there. He as good as killed him. He even admits at one point that signing all of the contracts means that he will have to keep doing awful things just to keep the plant alive so Audrey would like him... And he signs the contracts! He sells his soul for his own selfish desires and ultimately loses everything. Both the movie and the play warn of the dangers of taking shortcuts or doing the wrong thing in order to fulfill your own selfish ambitions. This ending wins.

Yeah, they just knew that they wouldn't have scared audience members so much with the happy ending, and that there'd be alot of kids interested in seeing a movie about a talking singing plant, as I was at the time, and that sticking with this ending may've given many kids nightmares, and that's what the movie producers were thinking of. But the thing is is that was this really a kids movie anyway? I was a kid when it came out and I liked the movie, but even without the less happy ending, there were other dark parts of the movie such as with Steve Martin's dentist, both with how he ran his practice and with what ultimately happened to him. He literally laughs himself to death with an overdose of nitrous, and is then literally chopped up and fed to the plant.

All these extra actors, all these sets, all these effects, from a physival labor and passion of work and from that point of view, it's actually kind of a shame it would be thirty years until we could all see it. Though personally, I kinda wish the directors cut DVD this is would give us the option of which version to watch because as awesome as it is to watch giant plants tear up Cleveland

sha11235 Yeah, I know the story behind the change. It actually doesn't surprise me. I don't think tragic endings were the thing in the 80s. I know Rambo was intended to have a more tragic ending too and was met with the same result. The only one I know of that did it and worked was Amedaus.

Dragonrider1227 This isn't the only time this has happened. The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers originally didn't have the narration and the flashback structure and ended with Binell on the highway shouting and nobody listening. Audiences didn't like that so they changed the ending to something more positive. Of course, when they remade the film in 1978, they used a darker ending-I don't know why.

I read somewhere that during production, director Oz shot a 23-minute ending based on the off-Broadway musical's ending. However, after audiences at the preview screenings did not react positively to it, the ending had to be rewritten and re-shot for the theatrical release with a happier ending. So I guess that's the first, and shout-out to whoever though of a idea to have this with the Director's Cut, even know the ending is based on the Musical But here's the thing: never struck a deal with the devil with fame and fortune unless it leads to your death, but here's what I would do: take the girl, defeat evil and live happily ever after

To be honest, I like both endings. This ending makes sense in terms of the story underlining the evil bargain Seymour struck with Audrey II leading to the downfall of mankind. However, I also like the theatrical ending where Seymour takes responsibility for what he's done and no longer being complacent in the world for his own benefit. I can see people liking either ending.

Cameron Will The film got a DVD debut in late 1997 as part of Geffen's 11th anniversary release.(Yes as early as 1997) This R1 release contained the alternate ending. The Ending was entirely in B&W. Geffen recalled the '97 masters and re-issued the DVD in 2006 with bits and pieces of the dark ending as well as a description of it. The 2013 BD release has the option of letting you watch the dark ending or happy ending.

My headcanon is that even with the Focus Group Ending the plant apocalypse happened like this, just not with Seymour and Audrey and possibly a few months or years later. Both versions argue that it only takes one fallible human being to give into temptation, and Seymour was only pulled back or reeled in because he had Audrey. Not every person has an Audrey in his or her life, though, and the plant is very persuasive.

The original ending is better. Here's why: In the 1960 original The Little Shop of Horrors, Seymour is a wanted man for killing those who he fed to Audrey Jr. He blames the plant for manipulating him and jumps into it with a knife. The plant dies, but so does he and (without spoiling it) the final shot of the movie is hilarious! The original ending for the musical remake makes sense, because Seymour dies but the plant doesn't. The devil has come to collect his due and the price to pay is all of humanity. I'm glad it went several steps further than the original movie (which I still prefer over the remake)!

Back then, if they left this ending in, we wouldn't be able to see this movie today. I'll admit, they put a lot of work into making this ending, but having Seymour and Audrey killed off was pretty mean.

Honestly, my main qualm with this ending isn’t that it’s dark, it’s just that it goes on too long and gets boring. The plant bursts through the wall, people scream. It bursts through another wall, more people scream. I feel we could have gotten the point in a couple of minutes and it would have hit harder. The end where it bursts through the screen is great, though. I can imagine that being terrifying in a theatre!

The problem with the ending is it's unrelated with the progatonists and not the norm for filmmaking. The character arc is not there. Usually the protagonist has their flaws fixed and he gets the (good) results of his change at the end of act 3 (or he fails and we have an unhappy ending). But here, Seymour dies at the middle of act 3 and is not redeemed. It sort of crashes the movie off tracks, it goes way off what modern 3 act strucutre filmmaking is all about, so audiences were shocked by it and hated it. I, however, LOVE transgression and bending the rules, and making it work. Since this is not a drama, this is a comedy, a farse, the ending works on a story-wise level (which is why it works SO well at the play). it fits the tone of the movie and the purpose.

I can see why this ending was cut from a logical perspective: It was a hassle for Seymour to even feed ONE Audrey II with a few bodies, how did all these people figure out to feed blood to all these other ones if they’re being sold in mass numbers in stores?? It makes no sense… plus, these Audrey II’s would eventually run out of humans to feed on once humanity is extinct, thus they’d all dry up and die.

If LSOH was a straight monster destruction movie it would have been great. But it's a musical based on a B horror movie and generally musicals have different beats then horror movies. The ending could have been a negative, had they ended with Seymour being eaten by Audrey 2 that would have worked. What didn't work was the big budge ending with a bunch alien plants taking over the world. That wasn't what the musical was about. It was about Seymour and Audrey and Audrey 2 manipulating him.
