For alleged “fans” there sure is a lot of ignorance in the comments. It takes a minute of googling to know this Seymour’s name is Lee Wilkof, he originated the role, he’s a year younger than Ellen and Rick isn’t here because the movie came out in 1986 and this was filmed in 1983. Now can we talk about their talent or are we just gonna repeat “who’s this?” “Why does he look so old” 🙄

He does look older than her by a lot whether he is or not. Sorry but he can't hold a candle to her. He's God awful. Don't know what the producers were thinking casting him but if I had paid a bunch of money to see him in that role I'd have been pissed.

@Omonohoshi

@@donnalynn2 Actually he can sing. It is because of his looks, that you feel he is a bad singer. And you are making a judgment call that stereotypes a person into a certain role. People on Broadway have paid their dues, regardless of how You feel about it. Anyone who is on Broadway has sometimes waited years. And for the role he plays, he actually is good. IF you look into the history OF the Seymour. He is a bit of a loser, who no one really cares about. So he embodies the role perfectly. Just because YOU probably would not give him the time of day, does NOT mean he is "God awful".
@Omonohoshi
@Omonohoshi 5 жыл бұрын
@Parker930 That is a bit harsh. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You probably would not like some of the music Donna likes, so she just expressed her opinion. While she doesn't really know music...it is still harsh to say anything about someone's appearances, regardless of what they said. Explain why she "missed the point", instead of attacking her. This is so common now, people just telling others to "stfu", instead of leading them to a different opinion. IF you do not have time to be informative, why are you here?
@Omonohoshi
@Omonohoshi 5 жыл бұрын
@Parker930 No worries...I felt the same way you do. There were many times I wanted to "clap-back" at peoples' nastiness. But did not. I usually do not post much on KZbin because of that very fact. That there are way more nastiness than actual good comments. Someone always wants to create drama. I usually scroll past, this time I just couldn't. I have no idea why either, lol. Maybe because Lee Wilkof (thank you Kelly, for the research which I was going to do. :D ) Sounded good to me, of course since I did not see this in '83, and saw only the movie version with Ellen and Rick, I was a bit thrown off, but knowing the Black and White version and the musical '86 version, I thought Lee was perfect for the role of Seymour. Which I explained to Donna. Nothing is ever a waste of time if we are passionate about a subject. Frustrating, yes...many times. lol I feel you a good person (not that you really need my acknowledgement), especially with your post. If you have the knowledge then share it. We are all teacher, regardless if we want to be or not. lol

Tammy’s take has really grown on me, it’s very distinctive but it makes sense to me, Audrey’s supposed to be kinda streetwise and even trashy, but in this day and age just having bleach-blonde hair and tight miniskirts doesn’t really read that way to us anymore, not quite like it did 40 years ago. I think Tammy kind of resets Audrey so that she reads to us the way she was intended to

I've always loved the movie since I was a kid. For some reason, this song gets me teary eyed; especially as I've gotten older. I love Ellen Green's voice. Watching the movie, I felt sorry for Audrey and thought she was beautiful. I guess that may be why as adult I was attracted to blondes, go figure. Whenever the movie comes on, I always watch it for this song and "Somewhere that's green."

It's a very emotional song. She had a terrible childhood with a father who abandoned the family. Girls from such families usually end up in a vicious cycle of abusive relationships in an attempt to fill the emotional void the father left inside of them. She finally gets the good guy who treats her well and feels like she deserves it.

It's absolutely amazing to see Ellen and the other performers doing this performance from the same year the original show was running. It pains me that no video of the actual original play was made. The movie is wonderful but it's really eye-opening to see its true origins in the play.

@@Oncearanger88 I've seen a homemade recording from the bleachers of the original play but it wasn't the original cast. By that point in the run the original cast had been replaced, partly I think because the original cast had gone to do the play in London by then.

We’re doing this for our musical and our audition song is this and I’d have to sing for Audrey, and I want to, but I’m nervous about getting made fun of, because I have been in the past. Auditions are the 18th and I’m scared. 😅 Edit: So, I went and it went okay and I got a callback! But in the callback I got an understudy position to Ronnette and I also got Stage Manager! So that’s really exciting!! (I never thought I could sing, so getting an understudy position as well as a part to assist in this production is pretty cool seeing as I’m only a freshman :))

NOBODY can do that rock belt like Ellen. It is incredible and ridiculous at the same time, and it's supposed to be, it's part of the camp of it all. She understood that. This little breathy, mousey-voiced Brooklynese voice just busts out with this serious, 60s-inspired torch big voiced rock belt completely out of nowhere. Everybody just does it with their Broadway corny belt or pop belt these days (too thin and nasal). It doesn't have enough contrast to the spoken Audrey voice.

I liked George Salazar’s interpretation of this song a bit better. Audrey did great here, but IDK if it’s just me or is Seymour being less emotionally vulnerable and more... creepy?

@@lennon4710 Lee Wilkof isn't nerdy??? That's the whole POINT of Seymour - nerdy. This new thing of casting manly, hunky Seymours just tells me that the idiots who do the show now don't understand the material at ALL.
