Metal Jane, that's right. Jo was a woman indeed. I like the way she looks at him so adoringly after telling him that she wasn't married. How could any fellow not know that a lady likes him with that type of beautiful gaze?

@Sweet Pea You should read the books first before commenting. He agrees to teach German for her because she has secretly been mending his socks and he can´t afford to pay her. Beside Jo is 25 and Friedrich is 38 they didn´t sleep together until they were married. It was the 1880´s. In this film he is not her teacher at all.

@Sweet Pea Well the conflict and altercation arise because Jo is not a regular girl. You are not wrong in your argument neither am I. She might have liked Laurie, but achieving her dreams meant much more to her. Again, she might have liked him but she could not risk her ambitions and her far fetched goals for anything which she feared could have created a hindrance in her pursuit of them. Sure, Professor tried on her. But Laurie tried much more than Professor Bhaer. The blazing appearance of Laurie and an ageing appearance of the professor were both in front of her to judge. She made her decision and chose the professor. Certainly not on appearance. Certainly not. She chose him for other qualities. What qualities, I know, Jo knew and many others surely know. But let me assure you there is something for which she chose him. Until you become wise enough to realize the perspective of her, please don't bring the level of discussion to your regular "That girl is mine/ She is my bitch" level. Jo is someone for whom I would also say "Jo, such a little name for such a person".

I love the subtlety of his movements in this scene, the pained look in his face when she runs to him, the way he smiles when seeing her happiness at the success of her book, but my favorite moments are when she asks if there is anyway she can make him stay, when he speaks he leans toward her and his eyes roam her face, but then he draws away when congratulating her on her “Marriage” *Insert Stroke here* soooooooo beautiful. Watch closely how Winona Ryder plays this scene. Heart-tuggingly sincere without becoming too maudlin. And always true to Alcott's Jo. Her sunny disposition amidst trials and tribulations is an inspiration and by the time she tells Gabriel Byrne's Professor Baer "Please don't go so far away", one can't help but fall in love with her. The emotional wallop of her final line " Not empty now" is not only powerful but achingly real and true. It is then that you understand how she deserved Professor Baer and vice-versa.

Fun fact - Gillian Armstrong got a very low budget for this because studio execs said men wouldn't want to see it (they called it a "little girls film"). She showed ten of them a rough cut and by the end they were wiping tears from their eyes. And immediately gave her more money for reshoots and additional music.

I never was a Jo/Laurie shipper, I think because when I first read the book I was ten and not interested in boys. I liked their friendship, but I just wanted Jo to achieve her goals: be independent, write, be able to be herself, live life on her own terms. And she got that. Later, I did care about her romantic life and I was sad about Jo/Laurie "ending," but I was OK with Baehr too. It took seeing this film to make me LOVE Jo and Friedrich. I know people were devastated because Jo and Laurie were such great friends and also had sexual chemistry, but the thing is, even that would not have been enough in the long run. Jo was intellectually curious, progressive, and destined IMO for something of a Bohemian lifestyle. Laurie on the other hand didn't even want to go to college. He was not her intellectual equal. Had they married, they would have been happy at first and maybe had great sex, but things would have taken a turn for the worse. Laurie needed someone to fill an emotional void in his life. He needed so much from Jo, and eventually, it would have exhausted her. At the same time marriage to him would have constrained her life. I don't think their bond would have developed into something richer, and neither would she have developed as a person with Laurie. I loved watching Jo blossom in New York, go the opera with someone who appreciated it, sit and talk politics and voting rights with Friedrich and his colleagues/friends and have her opinion respected, have a little glass of wine, discuss poetry. He helped her to know herself better, and loved her for who she was. And he had more to give her in many ways, too. And then there is the issue of children. In those days, there were really no birth control options. With Friedrich, she could raise kids, run a school AND write. I think Laurie would have expected her to be a more conventional mother. And can you imagine Laurie wanting to run a progressive school like that? No way! No, Friedrich was right for her. And I thought their story as portrayed in this film was beautiful.

I remember my sister showing me this (and other versions- she was obsessed) and she shipped Lourie/Jo and thought I was a nut for thinking Jo ought to end up with Mr.Bhaer. She asked why I'd think such a thing, and I pointed out that Laurie was a nice boy but that Jo was too stubborn and too much of a tomboy (this was my kid-logic here) for him and he was too sweet and she'd boss him too much, so they couldn't be happy - but with F.B. she and he were equals, no bosses. As I got older, I fell more and more in love with that idea that they were equals in so many ways- deep thinkers, optimists at heart, better at expressing themselves in written form than verbal, both with a tendency to break with social customs, both able to enjoy fine and simple things in life, bookworms, and what she lacks in world experience she makes up for in moxy and what he lacks in Laurie's kind of charm he more than makes up for with his insightfulness.

One of my guilty pleasures, I don't watch films like this very often but Little Women is another matter. The casting is genius, with Kirsten Dunst and Christian Bale giving especially good performances... Gabriel Bryne and Wynona Ryder are very good as well. The dialogue, locations, all first rate...can watch it again and again. Wynona Ryder made this picture possible with her considerable star power at the time. She made some great choices with director and writers as well as the cast...great stuff!

I think Jo/Laurie as a couple would be awful, especially if she truly wasn’t attracted to him romantically. Laurie would likely tend to be emotionally dependent and clingy especially since he doesn’t develop strong goals of his own, which would only drive Jo further away. And it seems her ‘type’ is someone strong minded [not the same as strong-willed]-someone as independent as she is; someone novel and intellectually curious to feed her creativity; someone patient and mature to temper her fire

I visited the Orchard house, where the author and her family lived. It is so beautiful there and they preserved 95% of the families belongings there, including the costumes Louisa May and her sisters used. I learned there too that Louisa May Alcott originally did not plan for Jo to end up with a man simply because she saw no reason for it. However, she was pressured by editors for her to write Jo to be with one. As "revenge", she said fine BUT planned for Jo to end up with a poor, buffoonish, although humble man in contrast to the rich, handsome man the editors had in mind.

Yes, similar, but a lot better looking IMO. Also Brandon in the 90s version of S&S was so much older than Marianne it kind of gave me the creeps. Kate Winslet was like 21 when she made that film and Rickman was in his late 40s or something. That's a huge age gap. Jo and Friedrich it was more like 15 years or so, which is quite different.

Rachel Novak-Same here. I always loved period dramas, so I would watch Little Women, Sense & Sensability & Pride & Prejudice all the time. Another one I used to watch a lot was the movie adaptation of Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow & Toni Collette.

Jo never had romantic feelings towards Laurie. Jo and Laurie were more like "brothers". She wanted to break free from the expectations of her gender and Laurie was her model of masculinity. The moment Laurie starts to see Jo as something else that old companionship is broken. Instead of treating her as his equal like she wishes, he becomes possessive over her. This forces Jo to go through a transition to find her own identity. Friedrich doesn´t fit into that traditional role of masculinity/patriarchal world that Jo has been conditioned to, instead he breaks all those male-female binary roles and accepts Jo the way she is and provides her a new form of masculinity which makes Jo to realise that she doesn´t need to fit into that traditional female role and he loves her the way she is. I love Little Women because it is such multilayered story and each character has so many aspects.
