Great review, Laura! I am definitely one of the Beths in the world, and your description of her seems very spot-on 😆 but I also got a bit of Jo in me as well, and that's kinda what I think is the story's biggest strengths. It's been a while since I've seen the film (never read the book), but from hearing you go through the story again, I do like how each of the girls have such a distinctive personality that anyone could see a part of themselves in these characters, leading to representation in a lot of ways. It's really cool!

Thanks! Yeah I don't think anyone would ever have a hard time distinguishing the sisters because they each are such fully realized people! True that everyone can see themselves in at least one of the sisters.

In the end, they were no longer little girls. They were little women.

Hi Laura! I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation! I especially enjoyed your thoughts about Amy. I never thought about her in the ways that you brought up, but very true about her wisdom and strength of character. I did feel Beth's strength of personality shone in that scene by the seashore with Jo, which I was happy to see included in the 2019 version (its not in the Winona Ryder). Actually, my favorite line in the book - the most memorable- comes from Beth - the "I'll be lonely for you, even in heaven" line. That one just gets me. I also think its interesting to note that Beth is the only sister that keeps her own name when transferred from real life to the page. I think perhaps Louisa had a hard time writing about her. (I also discovered that in real life Beth Alcott actually had the makings of a botanist and kept extensive field notes- she was kind of the scientist of the family). I think you did a terrific job on this video and I cannot wait to see your Book vs Movie Little Women Part 2!

Oh I didn't know the Beth in real life was a botanist! That is a cool detail about her. But yeah, it makes sense Alcott was so tender with her character as if reflected her own life and emotions. I'm glad you liked the video and I hope you will enjoy tomorrow's as well! Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts 🤗

@@WhytheBookWins Yes I think I read that info on Beth on the Orchard House website when I was researching the illustrated versions. Another thing I came across was that Louisa's color seemed to be red and Amy's was blue (which may be why The Folio Society chose those colors for the cover of their version but that is not fact just a "wondering"). But this is all from memory...I need a refresher! So many interesting things to learn about this book and the family it relates to!

The best adaption is the Japanese animated TV series from the late 80s, that aired on HBO and had 47 episode. It may seem geared for children, but it's really a drama.

Honestly I remember hearing the song "Pretty woman" when I was REALLY young (probably under 8) and then years later I read little women so for about a year I thought the song was "Little women walking down the street little women the kind id like to meet". it wasnt till I was at camp and my cabin did a parody that my counselor told me what the lyrics actually were!

@@WhytheBookWins honestly Im constantly mishearing song lyrics. I dont know if its because I have slight hearing loss (not enough to need hearing aids but apparently its there) or what but I remember when my cousin was singing "good morning Baltimore" from hairspray I heard "Good morning Voldemort" as in the villian from harry potter. BTW why havent u done book vs movie on the HP series? theres 8 videos right there! (7 books 8 movies). Ironically I think that later became a parody on yt.

I will proudly die on the hill that Gerwig's Little Women is one of the best motion pictures of the 10's. As the father of many daughters, the experience of watching it with them was profound and moving. (Which is a fancy way of saying I was a blubbering mess...)

I'm curious, did Greta Gerwig think the March sisters were raised in a barn? All four, except for Beth, acted like it! I had a similar issue with the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, where the Bennet family appeared to live in a barn for some reason. They were still genteel in the book, with an army of servants. The March sisters still had a maid! This adaptation doesn't compare to the 1994 version.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I love the 94 adaptation as well, but I don't think I agree that in the '19 version they act like they live in a barn. But yeah, clearly they couldn't have been _that_ poor since they still had a cook/maid.
