He had to use the weapon given to him how it was meant to be used. It doesn't sound fair, but them's the rules. It's really sad knowing that he went against Rin with an eel pie, while she got a three-section-staff, Rin again with a pair of nail clippers, while she had her cats, and Saigusa with a camera, while she had a toy kit (and, yes, she used both weapons to her advantage, the camera to get some sexy poses, and the toy kit was right up her wheelhouse).
