Water is the only thing that Will go in my water bladder, the bottle after listening to you. I like that idea of using both now. Thank you and thanks for sharing, great video.

Excellent video! I prefer bottles for backpacking and carry them on my chest and waist belts as well as side pockets. I use bladders for long dayhikes (and take one bottle as well sometimes). I use electrolytes (sugar free) in my bladder without issues. I have an insulated tube for hot weather and I blow the water back into the bladder after each drink.

I never thought to blow the water back into the water bladder so it doesn’t get hot. Good idea!

Finally! Someone with some common sense. I've just watched several videos that seem to think it's an either/or situation, which makes no sense. I normally carry a 2 or 3 litre bladder, as well as my Grayl Geopress. This video is way more in-depth and well though-out. Great work.

Great info. Thank you for sharing! I think the combo bladder and a bottle is the perfect solution. One thing that I would like to add is taking a water bottle that can hold boiling/hot water to preheat your sleeping bag and help to keep you warm at night. I got really cold on my last camping trip and wished I had brought a nalgene bottle!

This makes much more sense than those telling you why one is better than the other as if its a "one size fits all" situation......

Also important: You move the center of gravity of your back pack closer to your back.

They make a insulated line for the blaters to keep them from heating up or freezing I used the overseas in Iraq and Kuwait and have used them here in the state side in single digits. My recommendation is use both bottle and blater where you carry one bottle empty or full and a blater full that way it gives you the best of both worlds. If your blater burst and I have seen them do it, you still have a bottle as a back up and something to mix Gatorade in

Thanks very much! Very helpful. Both for me as I need to drink regularly with bladder and small bottle for hydration salts especially.

Yeah I like the large bladder small bottle combo for hiking. I live at decently high altitude in the desert so even for a couple hour hike I need multiple liters to stay properly hydrated. But because I’m drinking that much it’s good to have some electrolights with me as well. Best of both worlds. Also I have no really convince the way to store a water bottle so the tube is really great and means I don’t have to stop whenever I need water.

Thanks for the video! Was trying to decide between bottle or bladder and you've definitely helped my decision!

Thanks for the video, it has been very helpfull! I will try both at the same time, smaller bladder and two small bottles, seems to be a good solution.

I've had the water tube freeze on me, but was able to defrost it enough to get water. The thing I don't like about the bladder is that is usually sits against your back in the pack and seems to affect breathability along the back during warmer weather.

I normally have to pack all my water so I do both! A bottle for camp water, a bottle with electrolytes, and a 2l bladder. I’m packing heavy but I’m hydrated 😆 great video there are definitely times when one is better than the other but it depends on the situation 👍

I have a question about this. I’m actually looking for a solid combination of the two, so a bottle that fits in a side pocket of a hiking bag, combined with a tube to ease the drinking. For me that would be the best of both worlds.

Both are tools and have their place in my toolbox for different situations and whether running, hiking, etc.

"Cleaning" a bladder is not really an issue. As long as you keep the bladder dry and don't use any sugar-containing liquids you should be save.

New to your station, looking at water bladders, never had one. Have to find a video about the pack just for the bladder.

@lauren - hey! How’s it going!? So that means you use bladders for longer >40 mile bike rides? I don’t think I’ve ever used a bladder for bike rides personally, I figure my back would get pretty sweaty. But now you’ve made me curious.

Little Campfires it’s going well :) your back does get a little sweaty but my osprey pack is good at whisking the worst away. I can also keep snacks and tools in there. With a bladder and two water bottles I’ve never run out of water, even on 100mi rides (I usually refill at lunch and that’s it).

You can soak the bladder with baking powder and lemon juice for 30 minutes or so. Drain, rinse a few times, fill and forget it.

I have walked in Sub-Zero freezing weather with my hydration pack on with only a poncho over the top and guess what when you're drinking it doesn't freeze up... In my backpack I also carry a bottle of Gatorade and an extra bottle or two of water in case I do run out.... I'd be more interested if you covered bulletproof bomb proof indestructible bladders that will never leak even if you lay on the damn things!
