I like Stannis because despite what's said about him, he regularly sees the value in people who are typically dismissed or overlooked.

Unlike what the Nights Watch claims their promotion by merit, Stannis actually practices it. He does the bare minimum to keep the necessary lords happy because they control the armies he needs. However, Stannis’s inner circle does not contain any particularly high born people. Davos and Ser Clayton Suggs are lowborn, risen up by their deeds. Melisandre was born a slave and is a foreigner. Richard Horpe, Justin Massey and Godry Farring don’t seem to come from notable houses. Richard Horpe was hoping for a white cloak, meaning he probably didn’t have a good hope for inheritating favourable lands since he is otherwise kind of psycho who is said to be obsessed with killing. Justin Massey is trying to get any good marriage because he has no land or title. Godry Farring is BFF’s with Clayton Suggs, who is a promoted hedge knight, but is also boastful and hungry for glory. Doesn’t seem like a guy who came from a prestigious house. Also, I just realized that most of Stannis’s inner circle are kind of psychotic. Justin Massey is the most chill one and he gets pushed out. Richard Horpe, Godry Farring and Clayton Suggs are all described as bloodthirsty and itching for a fight. Never should have sent Davos away… As well, Stannis seems to like Jon Snow or at least wants to make him ruler of Winterfell even though Jon is a 17 year old bastard who it seems like half the Nights Watch is talking shit about. That saids, northerners would outright reject say Justin Massey ruling Winterfell.

Occam’s razor, Stannis despised the people on Robert’s council, and Littlefinger is the exact type of person that Stannis hates and would get rid of. Littlefinger wants power, and if Stannis gets the throne he would immediately ruin Littlefinger’s scheming by stripping him of all his power. That’s why Littlefinger opposes Stannis

Stannis very clearly doesn’t like Littlefinger, he talks about him whispering into Robert’s ear and things like that. So I assume the reason Littlefinger doesn’t want Stannis to be king is because he knows he would have his power taken away if not worse.

RedTeamReview On my first readthrough I loved Stannis for his uncompromising nature and rigid temperament. I love even more that he becomes more pragmatic over time and always listens to the counsel of his advisors. Stannis really showcases what a true leader ought to be. Jon comes close to him in that respect.

Literary theme alert! Preston’s beloved Sweet Robin has always reminded me of the falsely invalid Lord Colin from the classic “The Secret Garden” GRRM has openly stated his love for that book (check his talking head blurbs on the PBS Great American Read...) Lord Colin was healed by his expatriate cousin & claimed his birthright by natural “magic” or applied science to use classism against itself to overcome superstition & quackery. It’s a theory worth consideration... considering the lovely “Allstory” plan of GRRM’s “Gardener’s Style” of plot, etc. Thank you for your work, gentleman. It’s a genuinely pleasant diversion for this Old Nan during the quarantine.

But Donal Noye was definitely wrong about Stannis. If Stannis was unmovable iron and would break before he bent, he wouldnt change his mind when he gets good advice. He made peace with the wildlings, because he had to even tho he didnt want to. He changed his plans when Jon gave him a different option. And earlier in the series he forgave all the nobility of the stormlands for backing Renly. Stannis is way more pragmatic than people give him credit for.

Stannis' role as a king is more of an activist's role. in a sense he wants to undo the sociological damage that Robert's rebellion caused the seven kingdoms, by ending the question of succession in following the laws laid down by the Targaryen kings.

I don’t know... he’s kind of fixated on things; he did seem very angered that more supported his brother than he- Jon notes that sense of fixation he has, in his internal monologue - also, his wife is a Florent, & they- among others, resent the Tyrells as upjumped & a dozen of other High Houses have higher heritage than they... whether he would be reckless enough to shake up the status quo that has existed for some 300 years in the Reach, or not, is a bit of an open question...

Lewis Yes, I do agree- they were pardoned by Robert... but Robert’s dead- & a very large portion of people gave their support to Renly *over* Stannis (the elder of the two)- & then, on Renly’s death- the larger majority of _them_ went back to the Crown, only through _the Tyrells’_ going over to them. It’s pretty obvious that Stannis doesn’t inspire love in the majority- maybe some respect his adherence to the law, but people don’t love the cold & unbending - he seems to understand people don’t love him- he just expects to be obeyed all the same, because... law & custom dictates it? People acclaimed Robb, Renly & even Balon as kings, for reasons other than that... maybe that kingship wasn’t the goal of all of them- but it was what happened all the same... because people love & support who they will; who best supports their interests, who best understands their needs- in the North’s case- in the wake of what they saw as ‘Southron treachery’ toward their lord- they rebelled: Northerners wanted a Northern king - the Iron Islands wanted an Ironborn king... Stannis wasn’t willing to forge alliances with Robb or Renly- even temporarily: Baelish wasn’t putting words in Renly’s mouth at that meeting- those were their own thoughts. Though I do ultimately stand by my earlier comment, that it’s an open question- should both sides survive to meet again...

No, it makes sense. Stannis wants to value law and duty above everything else, but at the beginning of the story one of his main character flaws was how he would hold grudges and never forget any slights toward him. He would not punish the Tyrells, but he would definitely sideline them out of power, so considering how ambitious Mace is, conflict would happen eventually.

I feel the baratheons for the community are the most looked down on for the casal fans overall. Renly in his brothers words is a fairy overall and failure in how hypocritical he was yet liked. Stannis and Robert win thier battles and looked down on since rhegar is the "perfect" prince Overall hopefully stannis wins over the north

The Boltons aren't going to defeat Stannis, guaranteed. It has nothing to do with the strength of Stannis's forces and everything to do with the fact that the Boltons are despised by the other families in Winterfell. When Roose sees the Manderlys and Freys at each others throats in the great hall, we see fear in him for the first time. It's because he knows his rule over the north is very tenuous.

The Frey’s are the ones who had the red wedding in their own castle, the terrain is better suited for fighting than the North. (Although it is snowing, it’s no where near as bad as the North). It occurred to me when Preston mentioned GRRM leaving deaths of characters ambiguous so he can write more story for them later... I rewatched Series 1 last night and it made me realise... Benjen going missing is just another plot event to force Jon to question his vows and realise the realities of coming of age :( His disappearance represents Jon’s conflict between his loyalty to the Starks and the Watch. GRRM’s left his death open so he can pick it up again later but probably doesn’t have a definitive idea how to tie up that plot line...

Littlefinger was absolutely lying to get Ned on his side, or at least to get him off Stannis’ side. Stannis is a character who values justice above all, and he even says that men who fight for Joffrey might be deceived into thinking he was the lawful King, but those who followed Renly knew him for a traitor, but the problem is that this is something he told Davos, a man who made a concerted effort to get to know Stannis. I mean really, if Davos were not a POV character, would Stannis have any fans at all? Littlefinger might have been able to deduce the truth about who Stannis actually was, but he knew the reputation even more, and since the reputation of Stannis was the only one Ned knew, LF exploited those fears to make him think Stannis was less of a sound move than Ned believed.

Yes, and even though he wanted to bring justice against the lords who followed Renly, he was not the brittle iron by which Donal Noye described him, as he realised he had to ignore their treason in order to advance his cause. Littlefinger is just making sure the plans of a Stark v Lannister conflict come to fruition, while also maintaining his own power and position on the Small Council, both of which would not occur if Stannis was able to assume the Iron throne in King's Landing. There would still be a war, but the North would probably not be as involved as Littlefinger wanted.

Little Finger schemed to kill jofrrey with the tyrells but when they tried to marry sansa off, LF told Tywin and suggested a marriage to Tyrion. At the purple wedding joff’s wine AND Tyrion’s pie was poisoned and they were both supposed to die. LFs plan makes more sense if Sansa is free from her marriage. LF was planning for 5 years of peace under Tywin controlling Tommen. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. Thoughts?

Tyrion is technically married before Sansa, so either his Tysha marriage (which was consumated afaik) was dissolved without the High Septon, opening that possibility for Sansa now, or Sansa's marriage to Tyrion would be moot anyways, since he was already married.

I wonder if Bronze Yohn and Nestor Royce are working together. There is no indication for that, but for some reason Martin decided that they are both Royces just different branches. I mean, he could make Nestor a member of some random small house who was trying to marry Lysa and now is trying to make best out of Baelish like the upjumped greedy man that he is. Instead he made Nestor and Yohn share an ancient name of Royces. We also don't know how are they related. They could be brothers or cousins and so their cooperation could explain Martin's choice.

Im listening to this podecast. And all pf the sudden im realizing that all of westeros has a lot of foreshadowing about the 7 kingdom's being separere states in the past. And if you think about it, they're all in this track, like super fast: The north can or will be independent with robb/sansa/rickon/jon snow The veil can or will be independent with harry the heir and sansa if they want to retake theirs queen theone. Riverrun can or will be independent with lady stone heart/ the brotherhood without banners The iron isles are independent basically. I know this is commenting on a wicked old video, but I just have to say I think there is a ZERO percent chance Stannis would hold a grudge against Mace Tyrell and Paxter Redwyne. Stannis himself admits he had a tough choice to make during the rebellion, loyalty to his king, or loyalty to his brother and liege lord. Mace and Paxter have no such conflict, they did exactly what Stannis would've done in their situations

Wow. Carmine really thinks little of Westeros’ battle commander. 😆 TV show Stannis is a clown. Book Stannis towers over Jon Snow and has some Napoleon-esque qualities such as Napoleonic law where a lord can’t buy his way out of trouble. The Battle of Ice reminds me of Austerlitz where Napoleon’s forces are outnumbered but he turned the elements against Russian & Austrian forces. George is not going to let one of his favorite characters take the “L” twice in a big battle. Think Stannis’ fate may be vs Fake Aegon. Stannis was onto Cersei & Littlefinger way before Ned was on the scene. The three Queens have to be Cersei, Daenerys, & fake Arya which is one of the reasons why Stannis & some North tribes are trying to re-take Winterfell?
