One of a trio of great masterpieces by The Archers, this, followed by Black Narcissus and then The Red Shoes. Breathtaking work of Genius!

A truly remarkable film - perhaps the most remarkable film I have ever seen. I think anyone who has experienced near death will recognize various elements in this story and anyone who has experienced a migraine headache will know the curious 'hole' at the centre of vision as portrayed so convincingly early on in the film. It really is in a class of its own.

Can you imagine this being made today? The Hollywood bean counters would have a fit!. Most enjoyable and certainly different.

Came across the tail end of this movie on television and had to find it on the net and watch it. This movie is one of the greats that seems to have been overlooked. Way ahead of its time.

They don't make'em like that anymore. Always has me filling up. The first time I saw this flick was one afternoon as a kid faking a day sick off school. Time well spent I think.

Can't believe that I missed this one! I thought I had seen them all! Thank you so much for uploading this film. It seems quite timeless and fresh. The "fantasy" element was deftly played. Charming, humorous, light without being fluffy, not over-weighted with philosophy or excessive symbolism and yet thought-provoking. The careful avoidance of identifying any particular religious sentiment was not anti-religious, simply invitational, so that any viewer would be able to relate. Delightful.

Thanks for the posts "littleiceage". First and only time that I had a chance to see this movie, we had a b/w set, so I never saw this in color. This is one of those movies on my "A list" from my youth that I will never get tired of watching. A few others on that list include "I'll Never Forget You", "It's a Wonderful Life", "Roman Scandals", "The Bishop's Wife" (also stars Niven) and "Here Comes Mr. Jordan".

May 8, 1945), and people were still dying until then-that close to life and safety. Watching the beginning movie scene reminded me of9-11-2001 many cell phone calls from loved ones on the doomed planes and WTC to their loved ones or in some cases to total strangers who are as gripped with the same compassion/pathos/impending doom/ helplessness/ raw emotions displayed by June. I also wondered if some displayed Peter’s bravado, poignancy and yes, sentimentality in the face of impending death.

What a wonderful movie. It's so much in so many ways that it needs to be watched over and over to get it all. What an incredible imagination to create all that scenary. But I got to this movie because I been searching for years about another movie that I saw when I was a kid and I can never forget,. I just recall a guy exactly like this caracter Trubshawe in a scene similar to the opening scene performed By D Niven; but don't know the name of that movie or the actor really.

There was a real incident of a tail-gunner who had to jump from a burning plane during ww2. IN the tail turrret there was no room for a chute and his one had been burned or shredded in the fuselage. Suffice to say he did survive the fall somehow (snowdrift or pine branches broke his fall )I wish I could remember his name, he was quite famous once upon a time but the point is his story of peace and comfort after jumping is very instructive.

THE TRUE STORY of RAF gunner Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade was sitting in the tail-end of a Lancaster bomber when a German fighter plane opened fire. His plane, Werewolf, began to go down in flames and the pilot addressed the crew over the crackly intercom. "Jump," was the order. Sgt Alkemade, 21, scrambled for his parachute only to find it had been destroyed by fire. Dear diary: Nick Alkemade with his dad's diary and, right, young Nick reading about Nicholas's amazing exploits with his mum, Pearl .... www.leicestermercury.co.uk/amazing-story-wartime-raf-gunner-fell-18-000-feet/story-20171154-detail/story.html

@84heroes1 I don't think you understood my comment. What I as trying to convey was that this type of film which makes you' think' would not be made today and it ought to be.! Actually Shakespeare would have a hard job at being published today too as he would have problems with copyright! Now don't misunderstand me, I love Shakespeare. I could have done without the "blockhead"!
