You know what i realized about this episode: How did noone realize that Starlight didn't lose her colour? When they lose their Cutie Marks, they lose some of Colour to make it a bit dull but Starlight is the only Bright one.

If you put a little more thought to it, the same thing applies to Rainbow Roadtrip; Twilight and the rest of the Mane 6 didn't take notice of the town's and ponies' gloominess/greyness until much later (in which case the lack in color was more noticeable, kind of senseless not to observe). The ponies' colours as opposed to Starlight's brightness consistency, as I see it, are not a far cry from hers, I'd say. It renders her less discernible, it is not that obvious/can not be distinguished with ease. At least from my own eyes. (I have to concede I took notice long after when Starlight was on screen).

This episode greatly adds to my long-running theory of what exactly cutie marks are, since it's never explained in detail. You pointed out the change in Pinkie Pie after being Equalized, which I think is an interesting thing to pick up on. I'll make this short: According to my theory, Cutie Marks are a direct representation of a pony's inner magic. We all know everypony has them, and once a pony made its personal magic its own (which entails accepting who they are, among other things), they earn their cutie mark, signifying their inner magic to be unique and theirs alone. This is why their Cutie Marks vanished when Tirek took their Magic, and when Starlight took their Cutie Marks specifically, NOT the Maic itself, the magic was still part of the ponies, but it wasn't "their own unique kind" anymore. That's why the equal sign appeared instead. You can see it as sort of a placeholder. In fact, the Equal Sign pulsating and surpressing the Mane 6's traits was probably not directly due to Starlight's Magic, but rather their own inner magic (now damaged) clashing with their personalities. Anyway, my point is: there is a possibility that the particular focus on Pinkie's corruption was not just for gags or self-awareness, but rather to showcase how strong her personality (and magic) is, leading to a much more intense struggle within her.

Personally, I had always imagined Starlight believing Fluttershy falling for her philosophy so soon was just her pretending to, and she didn't actually believe _any_ of yellow horse's words here. This could also explain why she had Fluttershy stay with her during the night, so Starlight could keep an eye on her and make sure she didn't try anything, and Fluttershy waited until Starlight would inevitably fall asleep to perform the plan her friends cooked up. I just don't take Starlight as the kind of pony to be naive and trust what other's say instantly (especially when she was still a villain!) But, who knows. Either way, Part 1 and 2 of The Cutie Map are some of my favorite episodes in season five, and I'm very glad you covered it, even if I'm five years late! I love this series, although I haven't kept up with it in a while.

What i don't like about this episode is why isn't Applejack strong? Her strength is natural because she grew up on an apple farm not because of her cutiemark (if that were the case then she would have an apple bench pressing or something) Why wouldn't twilight remember how many magical items mystic mage had she most likely studied them her cutiemark is related to her use of magic not knowing magic Why wouldn't they be able to run i can understand rainbow dash being slow because her cutiemark is related to speed but why couldn't the rest of them run or why didn't twilight fly

I thought Starlight was just one time villain, which was fine by itself until she shoved as new character to the main group. Not as supporting character, but as a fucking replacement for Twilight! I don't like or care about Starlight to be main character- the semi Marry Sue character who is for no reason is as strong as ALICORN Twilight and has more screen time than any main 6 characters! They should downgrade her to support character and have screen time to Discord or Spike length
