Both Hornby and Bachmann are still guilty of that trick, sell a 40 year plus old model as a premium product, when will it stop. These are still be nice models if only they were in a low price range such as railroad I'm sure both companies would sell more as the true premium stuff is getting ridiculous in price. Also not everyone is happy with models so finely detailed and fragile they fall apart if you breath on them.

For the Hornby autocoach, over GBP 20, it is too expensive, anyhow you turn it. I had bought recently autocoaches from Bachmann, you get what you paid for at the price I've got them, arounf GBP 45-50 each. The Hornby model is outdated and should be in the Railroad range, period. Anyway, as a basis for superdetailing work, it can be a good model if you get it at a decent price second-hand.

Amazon were selling these for just over £20 with free delivery recently which seemed reasonable.

Currently available for £27.99 in the Model Railways Direct sale! The Hornby BR version is even cheaper. Finally railroad prices! www.modelrailwaysdirect.co.uk/rolling-stock-passenger/hornby-r4831-63-collett-a30-autocoach-190-gwr-chocolate-cream-shirtbutton/ The Bachmann BR versions are also in the sale for around £35-£40 which is great value for a more detailed model.

I'm surprised the Autocoach isn't in the RailRoad range. I bought an old Hornby one from the 90's and an original Airfix one from the 70's for around about 15 quid each. A great model for its day and I love mine very much but £40 of today's money is overpriced.
@LittleWicketRailway3 жыл бұрын
£15 sounds like good value! I think drop it into the railroad range for £20-£25 then retool a main range detailed model. There will still be demand for these.

Found an old Airfix one for a tenner a few days ago and now I'm hankering for another to run with my Bachmann 56XX "5619" or a 14XX that I have. I didn't realise it wouldn't be authentic coupling autocoaches to a 57XX or 8750 Pannier

The RRP for a model this old is ridiculous. I think the Pullman's with sprung buffers and working table lights are the same price!
@LittleWicketRailway3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the MK1s have sprung buffers, separately kitted pipework, printed info and a reasonable interior for a similar price. I think they're just a bit of a cash cow. Tooled in the 70s, so very little cost to them now, and still reasonably popular. However, the improvements in model quality over the last decade have been dramatic, so it's time to reconsider.

I have 2 Bachmann 64xx's, nice loco's, and good detailing pack. Also i decided to buy the Bachmann auto coaches much better model and there is also a good detailing pack with them as well. They can be picked up for around £50 now.
@LittleWicketRailway3 жыл бұрын
Out of interest, what livery are your Bachmann autocoaches in and what is the cab detail like?
@raymondrichter26203 жыл бұрын
@@LittleWicketRailway I have one in lined maroon and the other is red and cream, as I have early and a late BR Crest 64xx. The detail is fairly good, you have the regulator, handbrake and there is another lever on the floor, but not sure what that is, perhaps the train brake. I had the hornby version many years ago, but the Bachmann version is far superior
@IronHorseRailways3 жыл бұрын
Something which has interested me for a while this autocoach business. Sadly I have to agree though the hornby version is a VERY old model moulding but of course Hornby charge you modern prices for it... BACHMANN well, quality is better but clearly not that much... The loco was great though can't deny that... You know I wonder if a freelance style auto coach could be created using old mk 1 coaches and some surgery...
@LittleWicketRailway3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends how confident you are. The coach ends might be difficult. It might be easier to go for a Bachmann version and respray into GWR colours.

I have the Dapol Autocoach 187 named Didicot. I do not have a 64XX Pannier Tank but my Autocoach is attached to my Lima GWR Diesel Railcar. There is a black and white pic of a GWR Diesel Railcar pushing an Autocoach that I saw recently in an eBay listing for an OO Lima GWR Railcar.

Nice little layout and it looks almost finished which is very different for the usual KZbin half arsed hardly started layouts. Those Airfix Autocoaches are easy and cheap to transform for next to nothing; Separate the body, Wash and dry, Sharpie Ultra fine permanent red marker around the drop lights, cheapo passengers and driver?, Ebay magnetic cube couplers? Six Autocoaches looking almost as good as the latest Hornby version for less than half the price of 2 new ones. And thank you for posting this and keep up the good work

I love GWR Autocoach combos, and I have several that I have bought, in different states of repair, from as little as £8. The most expensive was a never used Boxed Hornby Gold Seal blood and custard for £21 inc postage. These are great for enhancing your weathering and restoration skills.

First bought one of these Hornby (then Airfix) coaches in 1979. Long overdue for a new GWR autocoach. The recent Bachmann one is sadly Hawkesworth BR era so of no use if you model the GWR
@LittleWicketRailway3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, either re-classify it as railroad and charge less or give it an upgrade. It probably doesn't even need a full re-tool, just some modifications. I couldn't find a GWR Bachmann version, only the BR one 🙁 I don't like modifying models, but I think I'll have a go with these, especially on the interiors.
