You're right, and I actually listen to it on the Internet in English very often. I also hear it in English at my parish every Sunday morning :). However, I very much enjoy listening to it in different languages...I find the Romanian and Russian versions to be the most beautiful, in my opinion. The point I was making is that no matter what language it is (and whether you can understand it or not) the Liturgy still speaks to us and still moves us in mysterious ways. After the Mongol yoke fell, there was a blending of Mongolian and Rus, though they have many more Turkic roots then other Slavic tongues. Then Moscovia took the name of the Rus they had betrayed to give themselves a historical narrative in the 17th century. Novgorod dialect was Rus, most similar to modern Ukrainian.

I always wonder about the "thumbs down" votes on things like this. I understand voting that way on things that are poorly done, or hateful, or offensive, but exquisite and beautiful music like this? Certainly, tastes can vary, and maybe it could sound monotonous to people who are not familiar with the context, but if it's not to your taste, just don't watch the video. It's certainly well done and is a great work of art, individual tastes aside. Let's save "thumbs down" votes for things that really deserve it.

I don't unserstand it either. Even when I was more of agnostic, I had an appreciation for almost all types of music, both sacred and secular. Music has always spoken to my soul in ways that human language alone cannot. As far as Christian musuc, I've had a love for old Gospel, some (very little)contemporary and rock. But I've always had a deep oive for cathedral chorr music. But no worship music as soothed my soul quite like Orthodox liturgical music ever since the first time I ever attended a liturgucal service. While I still listen to my favorite secular music I grew up with, more and more my quiet moments are filled with song from the Ancient Church. I know people who have greater faith in Christ and His work in their lives than I do who just don't feel drawn to the Orthodox Church or to this way of worship. They just don't feel it does it for them. I don't know. Maybe it's because Christ meets us where we are at each moment of our lives and speaks to us at that level i. order to bring us one step closer to where he wants us to be? We, in turn, must choose whether to oo Pen our hearts to His voice or close it. God forgive me for all the other times you speak to me in so many orher ways and I've closed my heart. God also forgive those who are not ready or not willing to hear Him when he speaks to them in a way they are not used to (such as beautiful chant that chants his Word).

Is is disrespectful that I listen to Orthodox Liturgies everyday, while not being Orthodox or even particularly faithful as a Christian? I can feel the importance of this music in my chest.

if you feel something when you listen to this it means God really wants you:) maybe one day you will embrace the orthodox faith, you won''t regret. God bless my friend :)

Well, my Orthodox mother would say: If you are listening to it only for your own pleasure, then yes, it is disrespectful... this is not "art", it is worship... if you are hearing it with a worshipful heart, and it changes you for the better each day, then you are doing the right thing... while you listen to/hear these sounds, always keep The Jesus Prayer on your lips and in your heart and mind; you will be blessed and begin to be able to be a blessing to others.

I disagree with your mother. Christ works in mysterious ways , if our liturgy reaches the hearts of men than God is working on his soul through our prayers. Not for us or your mother to sit in judgement, only He sits in our judgement.

Alla Miller Upon revisiting this thread, I see that I may have made my mother sound "judgemental" and also may have misconstrued the meaning of the original post... (I'm afraid I misrepeated something my mom said to me, and was herself probably repeating something someone told her)... what I meant was: As far as I know, It is not the intent of the composers nor the performers that people should casually consume these sounds as pure entertainment, or even as some sort of beautiful yet obsolete artifact.

Valaam and Vatopedi are both great Orthodox hymn destinations, but this particular rendition by this particular choir may very well be my favourite. Having said that, some of the Vatopedi performances are equally as superlative but there is something about the 'Liturgy of St John' that is especially moving.

O Θεός μαζί σας, αδέλφια! May God bless you, my orthodox brothers and sisters. The New Rome will rise again, the Evangelion will conquer the world with every word spoken. Remember our Martyrs, who defend their faith in every corner of the world.

If I understood you properly, you asked me in what language I left my comment. My comment was in Serbian. And it stated: "A huge thank you for this posting. Can we know who posted it on youtube so we can pray for that person for giving this gift to all of us around the world? The only desire that a listener has after listening this whole liturgy is to start saving money in order to personally visit Valaam Monastery."

It’s the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, the ancient Christian church service for the Holy Eucharist, practiced to this day in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The text is fully available in many languages such as English.
