When we were kids me and my brothers would go to my grandpas house to hang out. Every time we were there he always put SpongeBob on, because it gave him an excuse to watch it. I remember him dying of laughter from many of the episodes, especially “Band Geeks”. He once told my mom it was his favorite show. Just imagine an old widowed Vietnam Vet laughing his ass off watching a cartoon about a sponge. That’s why SpongeBob has always held a special place in my heart, because when I watch it I can still hear my grandfather’s laugh.

Being a daughter SpongeBob was actually one of the first ways me and my dad connected. It was the start of our rebellion against moms rules 😅 Ever since then, as I’ve grown, my father and I developed similar humor making it possible for us to bond in positive ways. Now as a 20yo we still find new shows to watch together- mainly adult cartoons such as family guy and Rick and Morty. There’s no one else to thank but SpongeBob for the bond I’ve always loved having with my father ❤

This is exactly my experience too. Me and my dad loved spongebob and bonded very early on because of the show. My mom never hated it, just wasn't her cup of tea. But yes my dad and I have similar senses of humor and I believe spongebob helped bridge that gap. Maybe the bond that grew between me and my dad is the reason i was obsessed with the show growing up. I had a bedroom fully decorated in spongebob apparel much like the west Virginia bedroom shown in the video lol. Either way, we are very close now and always discuss different TV shows with each other. I only associate spongebob as mine and my dad's show. My whole family loves Spongebob, especially my dad. The "Graveyard Shift" episode was my favorite as a kid so now the hash slinging slasher is an in-joke in my family. I do remember some of my classmates in elementary school not being allowed to watch it, which I always thought was weird. The best Spongebob memory I have was when I was about 7 or 8 years old, watching it in my room one evening. The episode ended, the credits started to roll, an eerie feeling crept in as it was getting late and the house was dark (the end credits can be kind of unsettling in the right atmosphere) and for a brief moment, the TV went black in between showing the studio logos and the next commercial. A moment so small and inconsequential but was also exhilarating and creepy.

As someone in animation school, the whole “Caillou strains the brain less than spongebob” argument makes sense. Storyboard artists intentionally have to make sure they keep everything looking “neutral” and calm when working on shows for young children. Think the animation speed and style for fighting animes meant for older audiences vs. Baby shark. Also, children shows often bring on child developmental specialists for insight on what to add to boards and what not to add

Great video. The only thing I disagree on is saying that basically all of modern spongebob is bad, because even though the current seasons are nowhere near as good as the originals I think seasons 9,10, and 11 in particular have some pretty good episodes, not all of them are good dont get me wrong, but theres definitely a healthy amount that are worth at least one watch. I still cant believe Stephen is gone though, he'll always be my idol. Spongebob means so much more to me than just being a silly cartoon with memes.

Glad you enjoyed it! Oh yeah, I rewatched more from those seasons since I uploaded, and I wish I took it easier on them. Found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.

I feel like the pre-2014 seasons of SpongeBob weren’t all that bad if you ignore the grotesque closeups, the ones now just feel like brain melt with excessive references to grand moments from those older seasons

Yeah, am I the only one who watched SpongeBob in it's "golden era" and then seasons 4-present and always enjoyed it no matter which season it was? I just love the show so much and every season has some really great episodes within it. ❤

@@NightCloudI similar for me actually, I think it's still a bit controversial to say this because the first three are just so so well written and hilarious, but for me, because I started watching the show on TV around the time that they were premiering seasons 7-9 with only reruns of season 1-4, it's 7-9 that are really nostalgic for me. I haven't watched the newer seasons 12-13 but I did quite enjoy season 10 and 11 so hopefully it will still be a good watch!

Funny how I haven’t watched an actual episode since I was a kid, yet at 27, I still quote it daily. And it blows my mind that my mom actually liked it. She was the over the top religious mom who hated fun lol, but somehow she loved spongebob. And the way your mom is with stupid, my mom was that way wirh “butt” until I was like 9 years old lol. My dad watched with me when he was home because he would crack up at the adult jokes, but knew I was too young and naive to understand. Also, that “study” is wild lol. Caillou was directed towards toddlers, SpongeBob as you said was older

5:18 man now I know how Cooper felt in Interstellar. It’s like someone just takes you like and smears highlights. I don’t know how to describe the feeling. Like love and sadness being given a hug from happiness in a room of despair.

fantastic video, i really enjoyed it and had a lot of laughs! ♥ i love my parents for letting my sister and me watch spongebob, it's one of our best memories together still today (i'm 31 now) and it shaped our humor so much, we still laugh every week about spongebob. the best cartoon ever made and it had so much moral in it.

It's safe to say that there isn't a show that has universally defined a generation quite like SpongeBob. Be it the classic seasons or the more recent seasons from season 9 onwards, there is quite alot to love about the show, its characters and... well, everything! This video does a great job showcasing the impact of SpongeBob. Great work on this!

The outro sequence is one of the most terrifying things in the world in a dark room, also the walk cycle is extremely skin crawling. I agree 100% with you there.

SpongeBob will forever be so ahead of its time it’s literally the culture, you can’t find anyone that doesn’t know who SpongeBob is or anyone that can’t reference at least one thing from the show, RIP Stephen Hillenburg

This was a really good video, I think something worth noting in relation to SpongeBob's creation history is Rocko's Modern Life. I understand the choice to point out Ren & Stimpy and Animaniacs but, Rocko truly was theunderstand primer before SpongeBob. Rocko walked so SpongeBob could run. Rocko's Modern Life also has alot of ties in its roots with SpongeBob, including Stephen Hillenburg as a writer and a lead creative director on that show and Tom Kenny voicing one of the main characters along with a large number of extras.

thank you for calling out the people putting words in hillenburg's mouth. those people claiming nick is "going against his wishes" while actively misrepresenting what he said. it always annoyed me.

My eldest sister & brother-in-law were one of those parents who believed that whole "Spongebob makes your kids dumb!" shit going on at the time. So unfortunately their kids didn't get to enjoy the early seasons of the show. So many memorable quotes ❤💫🤗.

i was born in ‘02 and spongebob was on the tv since before i can remember. my parents were huge fans of strange esoteric animation (ren and stimpy, courage the cowardly dog, aaah real monsters, just to name a few) and they would watch spongebob without me even being in the room. my dad hasn’t exactly been the best parent to me but spongebob is most of the glue that still keeps our relationship together, it’s something we can both agree on and that he won’t yell at me over and that gives us both good memories from when i was young. no other show has impacted my life and relationships the way spongebob has.

I love SpongeBob! I mean, when something helped you through your darkest moments in life, it's hard NOT to love it. There was a time where I would cry every day, every day felt like a nightmare, but I would always look forward to coming home because I would turn SpongeBob on and forget all the hell. It was what made me smile when nothing else felt worth smiling for. I feel like I can safely say that SpongeBob was one of the things that shaped me into who I am today. Everytime I see something SpongeBob related, I can't help but smile. I may not watch it as often anymore (I mean, when you've watched something over and over enough to the point you can recall every small detail of every episode perfectly, there's little point in watching something), but SpongeBob will always and forever hold a special place in my heart. I thank the little yellow sponge for being a light in my world of darkness
