How long do you think they're going to be 25 million dollar purses w/ no real money coming in for the LIV Tour? Where is their income? They don't have any. What this is is the Saudi's wanting to try and clean their reputation up, so they're trying to do it through golf. At some point the Saudi's are going to pull the plug on this. I have seen this act before in other sports. I remember the USFL in the 80's. Same type of thing, they signed numerous big names. What happened in the end? They folded, sued the NFL and they won a dollar.
@jeffjob69952 жыл бұрын
The PGA tour is certainly not sure how this will play out but they don't have to adapt. All their money that they make (tv, sponsorships, ticket sales, etc.) goes right back out to players and running their various tours. It's not like they are making a billion dollars and paying the plays a small fraction. What they can (and will) do is do what they've done. Ban the players... and let their events (which are nationally and even internationally broadcasted) showcase a better product. Watching Ian Poulter get upset about his ban when he knew it would happen is laughable. Knowing Ian Poulter (who was a ryder cup all star) knows he won't play in any more ryder cups and will never be a captain or have any connection to it is the kind of thing the PGA Tour has to continue to do to get players to not just run for the money. If the Masters follows the PGA Championship and not allow players in good standing with the PGA tour to compete, that will further keep players from leaving. I watched the london event (on youtube) and it had no drama... no climax... and it's really hard to cheer for a guy who is there only because of the money. No American TV network is going to do a deal with them and no major American sponsor will buy ads so its all about how long the saudis want to overpay the players who know they are done being viable on the pga tour huge amounts of money to produce what is in essence a celebrity pro-am. **But most importantly what will keep players put is when the liv tour starts firing/cutting/kicking out players because others who are higher ranked have crossed over. They only want 48 in the field.. if they got to 100 players (more than they need) and they tell several that they won't be in anymore events, that will all but kill their chances of getting more players.

"Forty years ago, it was considered by some a risky move for the guys who play professional golf to break away from the group created for golf professionals." This was about the PGA Tour splitting from The PGA of America in 1969. "The golf breakup occurred largely because of the influx of money that television had started to pump into the game. The top players (Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer among them) wanted to use the additional TV money to pump up the purses." "The PGA of America wanted to put the money in the general fund. That's when the compromise was reached, with the golf professionals and the professional golfers going their separate ways." Sounds a bit like today... The PGA tour categorized itself as a non profit so it could avoid hundreds of millions in tax revenue. That decision is now haunting them since it also means they can't hand out guaranteed money contracts like other professional sports.The LIV tour is doing exactly that so it's not surprising top level golfers want guaranteed money. If someone loses their PGA tour card they're gone with very little support. I don't see how you can treat people as independent contractors and then complain when they go elsewhere.

I think that, as Bryson has thus far dedicated his life to be a golfer, he simply wants to maximize his financial security as he has suffered from some physical problems lately. And, probably the same can be said concerning Brooks Koepka who has yet, IMO, to recover from his knee ailments. Time to "stop and smell the roses" for both, maybe? But, now that both are in the LIV, they have something the PGA Tour could sorely use: their "rivalry" and the interest which that can provide for the LIV. Both Bryson and Brooks are colorful characters but who's left on the PGA Tour who can be as entertaining? Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIlroy are all marvelously talented golfers, but they are about as colorful as a glass of milk. They play the game wonderfully but you can fall asleep watching them. (And, I may digress, but every time I see Rory I think of Howdy Doody, the puppet character from the kiddie show 60-odd years ago. "Hey, kids, what time is it?") Now, Bryson and Brooks? Wow, even if they're not playing well, they're still entertaining to watch. Bryson is the nerd who grew up to be powerful and talented while Brooks is like the bad guy with the black hat in a western movie (think Lee Van Cleef). That's the kind of star power and colorful characters the Tour is now lacking. It was the swashbuckling Arnie, the on course gambler, that made TV golf in the '50s and '60s and then the ascetic, cold and calculating Jack Nicklaus later on. They were entertainers in what they did; can anyone say the same about the loyalists on the PGA Tour anymore?

Amen. Why the PGA Tour did not seek a compromise and not fan a spark into a full blown blaze is strange to me, Then again, the Tour considers itself the plantation and the idea they have is that the members should be happy to work the fields for whatever money they can make and intangibles like "tradition" and "history." Intangibles like that are nice, but the old saying is so true that "money talks and BS walks." Pros play for money and this is the salient fact here, that the LIV can provide enough money to make a pro's life comfortable enough to remove the stress of keeping a card, finishing in the top 125, etc. If the LIV ever decides to invite 27 handicappers who are 72 years old to play for big $$$s, I hope they give me a call as I wouldn't care about politics or from where the money came.

I love watching the PGA Tour, The PGA Tour has basically got a monopoly on Golf. The US PGA tour says its all inclusive, that is obviously not the case, These Pro Golfers are independent contractors and professional golf is what they do for a living, The Saudi's have put a shit ton of money to entice players to play, it's very tempting, If you are a Pro Golfer and are looking to make money LIV Tour is for you, if you are a Pro Golfer that is about records then US PGA tour is the tour for you. I don't think the Liv Golf Tour will take off. No ranking points system, how do these guys that sign it expect to get into the Majors if they aren't inside the Top 50. If you aren't playing on the US Tour, European tour or inside the top 50 you ain't playing Major Golf period, end of discussion. I know being a professional sportsmen is very demanding, take Golf for example, travellimg, Accommodation costs, caddie costs, there is 45 PGA tour events plus 4 Majors, an Full time Tour pro would play in Average 25 events plus Majors, now a tournament is 72 holes, 36 hole cut, Thursday to Sunday, Pros would normally get to the event 1 or 2 days prior play a practise round and tee off Thursday, The PGA tour is ultra competitive and 1st prize is 17-19% of the purse. You basically ha e to make at least 1 million a year to breal even as Pro, Travel expenses and Accommodation are the most expensive overheads, These Pro's stay in 5 star accommodation and normally fly private Jet, but a Pro who is still truing to win for the 1st time will be doing economically maybe going to the event with another guy sharing expenses and that. The LIV Tour 8 tournaments are shotgun start which is just insane, no ranking points, yes big money p, but 54 holes no cut, no Fed X cup points. 30 players, maybe 50 players. Some players may used LIV to accumulate a healthy bank balance then try make it on the USA PGA tour. Either way I'd be going on the USPGA Tour.

It’s weird, but the same guys who would yammer on and on during PGA pressers are very short in their responses now. It just seems strange to me.

probably because of all of the backlash from the public not really strange.... normal really given the circumstances...... any time someone that is a public figure makes a decision that pisses a lot of people off and they are asked about it publicly they don't go into detail until after the fact..... sometimes ppl do go into detail but it usually just makes the public backlash worse.

@@robd1811 Yeah, you’re right. That’s probably a very big part of it. Hadn’t thought of it that way.

I agree with Bryson it's his life and his call to make who are we to make that decision for him anyway? Anyone who disagrees with this clearly never had to raise their own family before as it costs a lot of money to raise a family. At least by joining the LIV Tour Bryson can retire early and spend as much free time with his family as possible. I would also make the same decision as Bryson as the more money I make the more things I can do.

Who are we to say what someone does with their life? I still love the sport. I wish him well.

Well, they’re now funded by Arab-Hitler. So congrats to them? Funded entirely by a terrorist.

For every one at the golf Channel hating the Liv golf league they sure do give it alot of air time talking about it. Free advertising from the competitor.

The Golf Channel is not an unbiased observer of world golf, their talking heads' bias is such that they should change the name to the PGA Tour Channel. Brandel Chamblee's sanctimonious rants against the LIV make me nauseous as does the commentary of the others. Not one dissenting voice, not one charitable comment about the LIV, not one idea of understanding why these golfers are abandoning the PGA Tour. It's a Union Shop and the PGA Tour is the Union and I guess if you work for the Shop, you'd better spout the Union line. That is what I find shameful.
