Hello Peter, I am thinking on getting the Sorento PHEV 2022 7 seater in Finland, all i want to know is, does the vehicle records the footage and save it for later view like a dashcam while drivig and also while parked like the kia sentry mode? Does the vehicle cameras start recording when sense people approaching? If recordding is not available is it possible to easily add it?

Hello Peter, we just received our sorento phev sx prestige yesterday! We have the US version that does not include the ambient lighting. It looks like there is still a place for the lighting to be installed. Can we order the ambient lighting parts your dealership and have it installed in the states?

Yes, the SX will qualify for the Federal $2500 rebate. I'm not fully up to date on B.C. Provincial rebates, so you may have to check with your dealer on those.

Hi Peter! great videos as always! I'm wondering if the SX PHEV still has the plastic cladding/trim around the exterior of the vehicles ? or will it be similar to the gasoline SX version with the painted gloss black trim?

That's an interesting question. If my memory is correct, the EX+ in the gas version has piano black wheel arches, and the EX+ PHEV has more of the matte black wheel arches. So the PHEV that I have here has the bumpers with the piano black accents of the top trim gasoline models, but it's not identical. I expected the SX PHEV to look nearly identical to the SX gas model, but now I can't be sure. I'll have to see what I can dig up because my preliminary data doesn't get that specific.

Great information, thanks! You sold me on letting the engine run when the car thinks it is appropriate but I have a few questions. Let’s assume you have a full charge and a 40km trip in mixed driving. In the summer the engine is not likely to run. But in the winter, if you want to run the heater or defrost, the engine will run. Can you give us an estimate of what percentage of time the engine will be on? How much gas will be used during that 40km trip if the engine is only idling to provide heat? Finally, I have always heard it is better to drive a car after 30 seconds to a minute rather than letting it idle for a long time. Is this long idle time damaging in any way? Thanks!

That's a lot of content for me to work through, so I'll answer what I can, and commit to learning more as we keep this specific car, and others like it, around. In the winter, the car will run a little bit more. That's where I say, pay attention to the fuel economy readout, more than you do to the amount of time the engine runs. It's tough for me to predict exactly how much fuel you will use. There are a WHOLE lot of tricks that you can do from letting the car warm up, and then setting it to "driver only mode" to continue your trip. Some people like to keep the interior temperature a degree or two lower than they might otherwise, and use the seat heaters and steering wheel heaters to keep them comfortable, but when I advise that as an option, people tend to think that this is some kind of compromise car that doesn't warm up. The reality is, it won't get the efficiency of an EV in the winter, but it will get very good efficiency compared to a Sorento without the PHEV system. It's just hard to predict the individual scenario. As far as idling, it's usually best NOT to idle a car for long and to drive gently with it to warm up. The Hybrids are excellent at warming up quickly, and kind of "taking care of themselves" so it's less of a concern with them.

@@BrantfordKia Great convo going on here! Do we need to get a block heater with the PHEV version? I would assume that with the extra large battery I can leave the car out for 6-8 hours at -25 without having to plug it in. Thoughts?

@@hastamorirsociety I haven't seen anyone install a block heater on a PHEV. As far as getting the vehicle to start at -25 I wouldn't expect that to be an issue. If possible, keep it plugged in in those temperatures, but again, it should start.

Hi Peter. Thanks for your Kia Sorrento PHEV videos. My wife and I have watched them a few times already. We ordered our 2022 Sorrento PHEV 2 months ago. Hopefully it will be arriving by the end of this month. One question, do you know how long it takes to charge the battery enough to get the full 51 km Electric range without the level 2 charger? I realize it depends on the level of charge you're starting with, but say I come home with the battery depleted (as far as full EV goes). Will it charge fully overnight with just the basic charger? Thank you

I believe a FULL charge is around 10 hours. So for most people, yes it will give you a full charge, but if you get home late and leave early, and you want to maximize EV range, you may want to consider a level 2 charger which will cut that time down to the 3 hour range.

Yes, when breaking it puts energy back into the battery.

Yeah, a regular hybrid NEVER needs to plug in, and the battery will charge while braking, coasting, or when the engine is running. It sounds complicated, but the computer figures out when to charge, and when to use the power to contribute to exceptional mileage.

Sorry I'm all in your videos with questions lol. I am subscribed though 😃 When you say "you want the engine to run and warmup" Even when someone wants all EV mode. Can we put the vehicle in a mode to where it decides to do that? Say I want basically all EV but also would like the engine to warm up and do what it wants without fully just depleting the gas. What mode do we put it in? Basically if I put in in EV and smart will it still do Basically what you said? Hope that makes sense.

If you have it in EV mode, and don't need the heat in the cabin, the vehicle is very capable of running on pure EV mode. But if it's cold enough to need heat in the cabin, the engine is going to run to, both give you heat, and to protect itself, no matter what mode you're in. A simpler explanation is, generally if you put it in EV mode, it will run on pure EV 3 seasons of the year. The only time it won't is if it is in Sport mode, or if it needs to take care of itself for some reason. The only way to guarantee FULL EV driving is to get a full EV, but in general EV mode will run in purely EV.

At this point, you can get a 7 passenger version on the two lowest trim gasoline-only models, but that's it. I don't think they plan to change in the immediate future.

What kind of drop in range for Electric can we expect in winter ? I have the soul ev 2019 and I was curious if I should expect expect as much of a big drop for the electric range of a phev.

I have the 2020 Kia Soul EV, and my vehicle receives MUCH less drop than your car, so the more modern vehicles are better. As far as this car, it's tough for me to predict. They don't list that spec because so many factors can come into play. I'll continue to test this vehicle through the winter, so stay tuned for that information. When I share that information, I'll be able to give full context to the exact conditions that we're seeing etc.

So a significant portion of your trip would be able to be done on pure electric power, that would save some fuel, and even when that electric range runs out, you'll still get better fuel mileage on this car when you run out of pure electric range, than you would if you bought a car without this system. I think most people would benefit from this system.

I'm not sure if you've seen the link at the end of the comment. Kia Canada doesn't tell me when they'll update the website, but on occasion we do get a vehicle pretty early on. Sometimes it's just a matter of making sure every dealer that wants one gets one before they begin to advertise it. I'm not sure. I have just ordered a SX pretige trim version through my dealer down here in NC, USA. My questions concerns the Bluetooth system and Android auto. What happens to Bluetooth connectivity if Android Auto is connected via USB. The manual says that the car voice recognition is turned off when Android Auto is connected. But does that mean that everything is then mirrored through the phone including music and phone. Also, does the Bluetooth also allow for streaming music normally when Android Auto is not connected? The manual only talks about making phone calls and not music. And of course one reason for getting the higher trim is for the Bose Audio System, so I hope I don't always need to connect to Android Auto to play music.

I think the short answer is that when you connect Android Auto through the wire, it cancels the BLUETOOTH connection because it can use the wire instead. I regularly stream music through Apple Music over Bluetooth on my vehicle when I'm not using Apple CarPlay, so it should work the same for you with your music on your phone. You may have to set up the MODE button on your steering wheel to allow it to switch between input devices. I set that up so it switches between FM, XM and Bluetooth Streaming, but not AM or other inputs. That just makes it quicker to switch between the source that you want. I'll probably have to make a video about some of this stuff soon.

If the EV sign in the dash goes off and the green car (with the arrow line) does that mean that the petrol engine has kicked in?? I have the hybrid version. Also I have noticed the the SX has metal scuff plates on the door floor and metal scuff plates in the trunk. Is it possible to buy these?? I'm in New Zealand

The Green car with the arrow below should stay on whenever you drive (at least that's how it works here in Canada) but the EV turns on or off based on if the car is purely powered by electric power or not.

To preheat the Sorento PHEV, it will run the gasoline engine. Our EV's can be preheated by electricity alone, but the PHEV's will warm the engine and the cabin together.

The concept is very similar. They're different, but they're both classified as PHEVs.

If you remote start, you should treat it as a gasoline car. The engine could start at any point, even if it doesn't need to create a lot of heat. If you need heat, you can expect the gasoline engine to start immediately.

Acceleration didn't feel instantaneous as I expected, I guess the battery doesn't help there? Also, the dealer told me hybrid mode kicks in when you drive over 50km per hour, is that true? I thought you got 50km range regardless of how fast your went. Cheers

@@hastamorirsociety The feeling of instant torque is programmed to come on gradually, and it is smoother than a full EV which can aggressively launch you. As far as what your salesperson told you... There are some salespeople who I think are mistaken about how these vehicles work. I'll just leave it at that.

At this point, the car can't do that. You can do some updates at home yourself, while many major updates are done at the dealer at no charge.

This is the original Highway Drive Assist. I believe that HDA 2 will not debut in the Kia or Hyundai lineup until the Ioniq 5 and EV6 show up. I could be mistaken, but that's what I'm hearing at this point.

@@frankiejane1109 I'll see if I can be more clear. I just went out and tried it in our vehicle. If you look at the buttons on the right side of your steering wheel, the top left button in that section sort of looks like two pages. Press that button and watch your dash, you'll be moving a menu from left to right, and you're going to want to highlight the "i" with a circle around it. Once you get to that menu, the very top item on that list will be the digital speedometer. I hope that helps!

I think, in today's automotive climate, if a dealer can get vehicles in any sort of volume, they're happy with it. If times were different, I might agree with you, but right now dealers will take anything they can get, and if it's only available with one design of wheel, that's better than the alternative right now.

On 2022 models with 8 inch screens, you will be able to. The only 2022 model with an 8 inch screen that doesn't support this is the 2022 Kia Sportage which will receive the feature in the redesigned vehicle expected to arrive very early next year.

@@rafalkociemski5997 I've asked the highest levels of Kia Canada, and they know that I'm waiting for an answer as to why, and if a future software update will enable it on these vehicles. At one point a Kia person said that would happen on a Kia K5, but I haven't been able to get that confirmed by anyone else. So at this point, if you buy the 10.25-inch screen, you need to be prepared for it to stay as it is.
