That was awesome! A few things I never thought about like the brackets for the gas tank not being too far apart or it will break the gas tank. Thank you for doing this video...

Hello Thomas. Thanks for the video, it was very enlightening, I love watching your videos and I am a fan of UNICAT !!. I am building a truck expedition with my own hands and I would like to use the 4 points and keep the total height as low as possible. We know that this system makes the vehicle higher compared to the pin-spring system because it is necessary to leave a clearance between the body and the fuel tank and other compartments that will be attached to the chassis. To gain a few centimeters of total height, would it be possible to attach the fuel tank and other compartments to the subframe and thus eliminate the need for clearence and thus lower the pivots as much as possible? Is my idea supported? If not, what would be the impediment to adopting this solution?
@UNICATexpeditionvehicles4 жыл бұрын
Hello Nelson, the idea of attaching fuel tanks and storage compartments to the body or the subframe is supported ! We do that since more than 25 years and appr. 20% of all UNICAT vehicles have it. If I remember right, the UM12-Fh was the first UNCAT vehicle with that system. Make sure your subframe is strong enough and make sure you leave sufficient space between the chassis rals and the fuel tanks, both parts still do a relative movement. Thomas UNCAT GmbH

Hi Thomas! Great!! I did not know that UNICAT adopted this system. As the subframe has not yet been made, it will be built in a way that supports the weight of the fuel tank and all compartments. I was happy for the tip, it was very important for me to know your opinion, thank you very much Master!

This was my question! I’m glade that we were not off base. It seems like it makes more sense, giving more clearance allowing for a more accurate and larger tank and compartments and becomes a more unified look. Nice! I wish I could get my wife on board!

Can you please come back to this topic. I (and many others) would like to see a working, twisting, torquing model showing this flexing. Does the center mean the box can rock forward and backward? Ant the two (front and rear) points allow it to rock side to side? If the center doesnt allow the for rocking front and rear, what good is it doing? Ive hear from other sources, never bolt to or weld to the subframe. It needs to twist and bolting to or welding to stops that resulting in braking and cracking subframes. Your thoughts...

Thanks a lot Thomas for this informative session! how do you compare spring mount with torsion free 3 point mount? for spring mount, I mean adding another set of U frame section on top of existing one and add a bunch of springs between these two frames so the lower level torsion won't transfer to the upper level. thanks a lot!
@UNICATexpeditionvehicles4 жыл бұрын
Any type of spring mount is not torsion free because you need forces to compress the springs. When you get twist in the chassis frame, the upper frame will follow that movement more or less, whatever the springs allow in travel. The result is: The upper frame will still twist at least a bit and so will the body - which is not good for the body. The upper frame will stiffen the whole package and will reduce the twist of the chassis frame - which is not good to keep the wheels on the ground. A spring mount system will not allow as much chassis twist. Once it comes to it´s mechanical limit, full forces will be transfered - not good at all. Spring mount systems as described are typically used for trucks with a tank. Those tanks are typically round and long, they don´t like to be twisted, but those tank trucks are used on normal roads, not in off-road.

Hello Thomas how are you? I would like another tip from you, I realize that vehicles with 3 pivot points have a stability impaired by the balance of the box compared to spring pins. In the pivoting system, do you think it would be possible to add shock absorbers to minimize this oscillation without harming the chassis torsion?
@StuFrodsham2 жыл бұрын
Did yo work out that there is no oscillation to be dampened ?

Is the subframe made of steel or aluminum?

Last question(s). I am building a camper for the back of my 2003 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV. I am building a 17 foot (518.16 centimeter) long by 8 foot (243.84cm) wide by 7 feet (213.36cm) tall camper. I was going to frame it with aluminum studs and gusset the frame. I was going to below it straight to an aluminum subframe built into the floor. I was going to use 6x3 with ⅛ wall tube for the subframe. The subframe is going to be 4 points. 1) Will aluminum work for the subframe, or should I stay away from aluminum for the subframe? 2) Do you have schematics, or suggestions on the exact location for the 4 point subframe mount as it relates to the location on the LMTV frame. This if based on the dimensions of the box I am building above. thank you again. Learning alot from your videos for my project.

I have the same plan ish in my mind for a m1088 in my mind of course! Need a few more ducks in a row and projects off the table first. But I’ve pondered and researched. Not that I have any experience. But as I gathered from uncat he seems to over engineer things including the capacity of the truck in regards to the weight. This seems to me a very sound MO. So you will need much more aluminum to equal steel in strength. I don’t know how to gage that but may be it’s not necessary with the ability of such a sturdy truck and its capacity? I’ve seen some four mount systems where the front swivel mount is just back of the transmission etc the rear swivel mount pretty much right at the back and the Center two mounts are just in front of the axle assembly but I think still where all the extra steel is that stiffens up the axle area where every thing spring and shock related attaches to the main frame. This way the forces on the rear of the truck readily transfer to the box with out added stresses to the main frame. This is the stronger more accurate place to allow the motion and force that must move to the box while the other swivel mounts allow free movement with out argument. That’s my useless opinion!! So hopefully now the master will tell us we’re this is true and or false!
