Unforgettable race and one of Rossi's greatest perfomances, if not his best. This was also a turning point for that 2008 season, as Stoner had won the 3 previous races from pole and had qualified almost half a sec faster here, but from this race onwards (which was also Rossi's first win at Laguna Seca), Rossi pretty much took over the championship

@@AntiPlatitude all the riders have been complaining about the bumpy nature of COTA, especially with heavy formula 1 cars racing here as well. It's difficult to ride at COTA. Laguna Seca was so awesome, especially the iconic corkscrew chicane. Seeing the bikes have that 1 storey drop, drive through it in one row and do some overtakes as well was beautiful. Even Indianapolis is a good track, and looks aesthetically better than COTA at least.

I state that I have never been a fan of Rossi. I add that I was (and continue to be) a huge Stoner fan. It must be admitted that in this race Rossi did a masterpiece: with a slower bike, he managed to beat Stoner, simply making him nervous !!! Very few pilots can say they have done it! I think Laguna Seca 2008 was Rossi's best race, even better than Welkom 2004, because the difference in bikes was greater, and Stoner was superior to the very good Biaggi.
@justinsm Жыл бұрын
i ever fight with my little sister because she choose rossi and i choose biaggi. looks like she was right
@vincenzabenvegnu9876 Жыл бұрын
@@justinsm Rossi was certainly more talented than Biaggi. But it should also be remembered that he had more time to learn; in fact, Rossi has been riding a motorbike since he was a child, while Biaggi got on a motorbike for the first time already "as an old man" (he was 18 years old!). However, the more time passes, the more Biaggi's image tends to improve, perhaps also because he managed to end his career as world champion (something few managed; I remember Stewart and Prost), while Rossi remained racing (and, above all, losing) too much time, traveling along a long and sad sunset avenue which, inevitably, has deteriorated his image.

Listening to the commentators provides good testimony about the received view at the time: Stoner could beat Rossi on speed alone and Rossi was old news. You can hear the commentators explaining Rossi’s persistent lead by ”master tactician”, ”making himself wide” and ”breaking up Stoner’s rythm”. What they fail to recognize is that Rossi’s pace has left the third rider about 24 seconds behind with 9 laps remaining, all while keeping Stoner behind him. He was simply fast that day.

I have seen this race so many times that I have started to look at details rather than the race proper. What is clear is that Stoner was The Chosen One at Ducati and the only rider that make maximum use of the bike. Already in the beginning of the race, he slides a lot while maintaining consistent control though the corners. This is something Rossi could not do. To me, Rosis style is more classic - late breaking and traditional cornering - and it looks very relaxed and elegant with sweeping lines and little or no sliding. But he needed a bike with excellent handling, which the Ducati did not have at the time. Stoner on the other hand could slide the Ducati through corners at good speed just like that and then use the superior power of the Ducati on the faster sections. Different bikes, different styles - same speed round the track this day. Stoner was the favourite based on the qualifiers but it is not the same as racing. That day, I think they were about as fast due to Rossi stepping up his game, not Stoner losing his. In the end, I think Rossi would have won that day even if Stoner had not crashed. Not that he was faster, but his style is very economical on the tires and Stoner's was not at this speed - he had to slide his bike from the first lap. If so, it would have been a typical Rossi ending and it would not surprise me it was part of his playbook in this race. His MO was to stay in contention early in the races, often on harder rubber, saving the tires. Later, it was mostly about maintaining speed when the others were losing their grip. It was a recurring scenario throughout his career. Anyway, one of the most exiting races IMHO even though there were only two riders that mattered.
