I was off work for eight months on disability. George Washington became a good friend of mine during those eight months. I took a vantage of the time off and studied George Washington by reading biographies and listening to audio versions of them. I also have a book of selective writings. His entire life is fascinating to read about. Right now I’m reading a book of his presidency. It’s been seven years since I was off work and I’m still learning about him. This was a great video thanks for posting on KZbin. I always learn something new from watching these. Thanks

Outhouse/privy/Necessary/Johnny house: If it's 100 feet from the house, that's 100 feet too close in the summer and 100 feet too far in the winter.

@BrowncoatBoaz That's an old expression. As much as I'd like to claim ownership, I can't. : )

Below are the answers to a few questions our experts did not have time to answer while live. Thanks for all who watched! eshri asked-Do you think there might be other foundations of buildings not currently known around the property? Almost certainly! That is one of the strong suits of archaeology: the study of the early landscape and the evolution of the plantation from the property Washington inherits to the one he leaves behind in 1799. This includes several structures that may have yet to be found. McKenna Rowell asked-How many buildings have been discovered since Mt. Vernon has been a historical landmark? Several buildings have been studied and documented archaeologically. Some have even been rebuilt as a result of our work and analysis, in collaboration with our colleges in architecture. The “Dung Repository” and the Distillery were both intensively excavated before being reconstructed on their original footings. Other buildings such as the structure we located in the South Grove, and the Old Necessary, will not be rebuilt, as these buildings were no longer extant in 1799, the year of Washington’s Death. Howie WA3MCK asked-Was “water struck” brick used in the foundation? No. We believe these bricks were made with local clay, and not using the water struck method.

I had read the email about this and looked with fascination at the early drawing showing this necessary. I wanted to know more, so I was excited to see this post today. Thank you, as always, for sharing such info and visuals.

Excellent presentation and very interesting for a variety of reasons. Tricky topic where being detailed is a fine line between clear and detailed, but not too graphic haha. Thank you and all the staff for their dedicated efforts and expertise. Also, nod to the Washington Nationals cap. I’m sure the former owner would approve... and get a chuckle.

Tell everyone about the Ice block house near the Potomac. How old is the ice block house?

I was there 2 years ago. When did they start the digging? I saw a man doing some small excavation just outside the exit of the house tour.

Because it smelled during the warmer months of the year. It also offered a bit of privacy by being out of plain view from the house.

Bathroom is completely misleading. No one was bathing here. It was an outhouse. In cold weather, dark of night or in cases of illness a chamber pot would have been used indoors.

Are we not using ground penetrating radar? Less labor, cost, destruction etc instead of digging all these test pits for potentially nothing? Just curious seems how they keep referring to technology and using it to its advantage at the site.

Hollis. Mt Vernon is totally privately funded, by donations, the gift shop there, and many historical foundations. No tax dollars at all
