Thanks for a great night of boxing, with some very impressive up and coming young fighters. In the last bout between Gardner and Macmillan, I didn’t see the first 4 rds but from what I saw Gardner looked the technically better boxer. Although I can’t fault Mac for his determination and energy, he reminds a bit of George Groves, his style and appearance, very fast, great head movement and bags of energy and stamina. But he was buzzed 2 or 3 times in the latter rds, once he had to hold on to save himself and Gardner landed the heavier cleaner punches, whilst also blocking and absorbing Mac’s punches. Mac came back strong in the last Rd, it should’ve really been a draw, but with such huge support for Mac that made him the home turf favourite, so I understand why the judges swung towards him. It’s a pretty rough and tough crowd up there in the Manks. I honestly think that Gardner could and should’ve pushed harder earlier on and would’ve scored at least one knockdown, bc he was so close to getting it. But hindsight is a marvellous thing and he had the right strategy for a 12 rd contest, a pity for him it was 10 rds, or he most likely would’ve got the W. He was getting his second wind, while Mac looked fairly exhausted and slightly wobbly. Gardner will improve, adjust and adapt, this will be a hard lesson for him that will spur him, to become a better boxer. Perhaps in the long run, it will be a blessing in disguise, he does have great punching techniques and just needs to improve his movement a bit, to create openings and utilise his hook more. He was slightly 2 dimensional, bc he’s more powerful than speedy/ lighter on his feet. While Mac is the opposite, more fleet footed and agile moving his head more, but less power in his punches. It’s always a difficult balance to get right in training. Imo, all title fights should be 12 rds. Or if it’s a draw after 10 then they do 2 more. The average standard today of young boxers, is higher than 10 - 20 years ago, due to improvements in nutrition and training techniques.

Judges scored the fight for MacMillian by the 3rd rd! Kane's corner should have told him only way you get the win is by KO.
