I have a friend in GTMO working i I used to work there as well, Russia has beenn there before what's different about now? They go once a year. I even told her about this Monday, and she didn't care at all. She made me feel dumb for mentioning it. They do go to Cuba nearly every year. What's different about now? Any thoughts?

I could be wrong here, but I don’t think there have been any larger-scale public visits to Cuba by Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. I think the optics of an entire Russian naval fleet, complete with nuclear-capable submarines, arriving in Cuba during a period of open hostilities between Russia and NATO reminds many people of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The crisis was revealed to be even worse than what was thought at the time when it came to light that a singular Soviet submarine officer, Vasily Arkhipov, had prevented the launch of nuclear weapons at U.S. ships. The submarines present in Cuba now are said to not be carrying nuclear weapons at this time, but no one knew about the presence of nuclear weapons in 1962, so one can see where this naval exercise is contributing to escalation concerns, particularly amongst the public.
