Ghiaurov and Talvela together were simply magnificent. Ghiaurov, elegantly imposing. ..Talvela, the snarling menace, the head of the Inquisition. Both men's voices were tidalwaves of sound. And Verdi's genius to write this duet as a "one-up-manship" declarative vocal line remains one of the greatest scenes he ever wrote. The tension between the two literally is breath-taking!! RIP both Ghiaurov and Talvela. They are both long gone - but egad how blessed we are to have their recordings.

Both Ghiaurov and Talvela are formidable here, but especially Talvela's emotional expressiveness and intensity drives the action forward! He is definitely the number one grand inquisitore! Fantastic duet!!! No one of today's singers can repeat this! Unfortunately!! :-(

Since I haven't heard every performance in history of this duet, I cannot say for certainty that none other was as good as this, but I can say that none other surpassed this, because both of these performances are utter perfection. Two of the basso GOATs, both with stupendously large, beautiful and deep voices, and both of whom sang their part with incredible passion and musical perfection. The genius of Verdi was that he matched these two voices to the 2 top rulers of Spain, the king and the grand inquisitor, and the power rivalry between them permeates the lyrics and the vocal line of this incredible duet. These 2 singers capture the power of the 2 leaders with their voices, and their singing captures the complex psychological rivalry between them. Thanks a mil for the upload.

I honk the siepi and hines duet surpasses this one. I disagree with some of the artistic choices in this version, and while Talvela has a massive voice, it feels like it needs to sound older (which Hines did a good job with). I still like this performance, but I don’t think it’s at the top. Ghiaurov is a beast among beasts though, my personal favorite bass.

Totally agree- opera today is a dying art, houses are more concerned with egocentric producers rather than standards of singing which have been falling at an alarming rate.
@mk52445 жыл бұрын
...Today egocentric directors use the textbook iso la partitura. Music is sometimes secondary. And furthermore during the times of a Talvela and a Ghiaurov big voices were demanded and developed. Today they develop even voices where there is no voice at all . They burn like candles and are easily substituted by the next ones. Dreadful to see male voices on top level opera houses. Mediocrity reigns supreme. Dreadful. RDS

Of the many live recordings of Ghiaurov and Talvela in this duet, the present one from Vienna 1970 is my favourite. Absolutely peerless interpretation of two titanic voices. And with Corelli and Verrett, like Ghiaurov and Talvela, in sensational form, this is one of the greatest live Don Carlo performances on record (pity for the soprano and baritone: Frieni had not started singing Elisabetta yet and Bastianini was already dead; with them the cast would have been the ideal one!).

P. S. Orchestra a dir poco fantastica!
