This seems to be a very good explanation, I vaguely remember learning this stuff as part of a degree in physics and electronics, but as I've not used the knowledge in the meantime it's mostly evapourated and been replaced with pop culture ephemera. If I could largely follow the content then I'd imagine anyone who actually needs this knowledge would find this very useful. It's some difficult material, and an instructor with a great deal of knowledge and insight is a gift.

Very good video. It's clear and easy to understand your explanations. I literally learned a lot from you, thank you.

This is likely the most meaningful, concise, relevant content for board layout, on the internet. Recommended.

Glad I saw this. I don't care who you are or how long we've been at this game, this is well done and extremely useful.

"Essentially what I'm encouraging here...is early forecast and communication with your supply chain" HAHA, it's 2022 now. What an absolutely true and devastating statement to hear in 2022.

will the impedance rule check in altium use a 3d solver in the future ?

From the Altium Designer 19 documentation, "This release sees the introduction of the Simbeor® electromagnetic Signal Integrity engine from Simberian. Simbeor's model accuracy is validated through the use of advanced algorithms for 3D full wave analysis, benchmarking and experimental validation. The Simbeor engine supports all modern board structures and materials." You can read more about impedance calculations on the documentation page, but let me know if you have more questions: www.altium.com/documentation/altium-designer/controlled-impedance-routing-ad#!what-determines-the-routing-impedance

@@davidhaboud9557 I believe so far it is only used for initial geometry calculation and not in rule checking. I would like to see the rule check fail whenever i have copper features too close my controlled impedance lines no matter what layer the offending features are on

@@timun4493 You have to combine the new impedance profiles with clearance rules. You can set a clearance for any net or net class. Take a look around the documentation for clearance rules. You might need to make some net classes or impedance profiles, but you can do it. We showed how to do this at AltiumLive Frankfurt. I should be able to send you the recording when it is produced in a couple of weeks if you want. If you have more questions, go to the Altium.com/forums and I'm sure some other users will give you some tips to figure it out.

@@davidh6522 i already have 3x height above the plane clearance rules for nets where i really care about impedance, but it would still be very useful to have the rule checker consider adjacent layers to prevent the inadvertently broad side coupled configuration mentioned in the video, being able to reference arbitrary polygon pours in addition to plane layers would also be nice. My initial question was simply wether there were any major changes/improvements planed. Thank you for your replies so far.

I don't know why youtube just started playing this or why I left it on in the background for an hour but I neither understood nor cared to understand whatever this guy was talking about, aside from this: it is SO condescending when a public speaker says "okay" like that, over and over again. Stop it.
