yes, the Klon is overhyped but I want one. When I heard Jeff Beck uses one, bazinga! But supply and demand dictate what's happening. I totally agree that any circuit can be replicated if the necessary parts are available. loved the addition of the black box when playing solo while demoing the clone before the boss.

I had an actual dream this morning where Josh released the Oxford, his Bonsai/RatPack take on the Klon. I realized after thinking about it that there aren’t enough distinct tones in the lineage of this circuit to make that work, especially not without burning through the goodwill of his pedal making friends. Still, it was a fun dream, and the box with the little dictionary shaped book with a centaur on its cover seemed JHS worthy.

It's the simple homemade nature and story of this pedal that makes it so special. That hand-built look about it with the not-so-slick, and changeable, graphics (and colour combinations). And the fact that you know that one guy built all of them himself, personally. This is the opposite of cold industrial mass production. It has personality, humanity and warmth -- I think that's much of this pedal's appeal.

Lets be real here. Alot, and I mean alot, of manufacturers already proposed this and it didn't happen. What's preventing this to be done is just Bill's will. Think about this. If your product was worth thousands in the resell market, and you had some of your own, and by some it could be a hundred for all we know, it's practically a lifelong savings guarantee for you and your loved ones. Would you be willing to flood the market again with the same product and therefore get rid of that lifelong savings guarantee ? And no, the Klon remake he made with Archer is not the same product. And he knows it. If you have any idea how the stock market works, this would be the equivelent of buying stocks, and then crashing the market price for said stocks while holding those. It makes no sense. So I get what Bill is doing, and I respect it. He isn't upfront about it, probably because he would get bashed and hate by every politically correct person, but it makes sense.
@Mathcartney
@Mathcartney 3 жыл бұрын
@@MiguelBaptista1981 yeah, but eventually the ones that he still have gonna end. Its hard to think about others actions but making a partnership with the right side in some cases can led to much more money than the stock approach, but to each their own. I would probably be a happy person if lets say the jim dunlop company came to my door and asked about buying/making a partnership and then sending me a cool percentage of the yearly or month sells, both sides would be winning by making a shitload of money, having the original klon circuit shit on their marketing and all the customers that like that thing and, the guys that pay 4k for a pedal are a minority and they would pay that anyway for the 90s klon despite what are in the market now, but think about the thousand of other people (professionals or not, thats a huge thing) that would pay 200 dollars for lets say the hypoteticaly jim dunlop pedal. In a year the dude would make more money this way than idk selling his remakes or making that sharehold play, you know, he could asks instead of a cash payment, a percentage of the companys stock, so he could do the same game as you're talking but in a more solid and safer way, but whatever.

Way Huge Conspiracy Theory was my favorite Klone, I’ve tried more expensive boutiques including the Archer Ikon, etc. but that one just was such a good pedal. Currently rocking the Sugar Drive and that seems to get it done too. It’s a very cool circuit but there’s certainly nothing magical about the Klon Centaur in 2020. Buy a Klone of some kind and rock on, from dirt cheap to fancy and expensive they all can sound very very good and will have more similarities than differences.

Great show guys! As long as you're planning more shows featuring the Klon and Klones hear's an idea: I understand that the diode doesn't really kick in until some noticeable gain starts to happen, but for guys like me that's where the magic is for clean sounds especially for Jazz! This is where I think I can sense differences in the different Klones I've tried and owned, not only with subtle sound differences but also with the feel under the fingers. I bring up the gain until I can hear and feel the diode kicking in. It would be cool for you guys to do another shoot-out with this in mind! Thanks for considering.

Klon is overhyped, but I won't sell mine. Bought it off Bill before they went crazy and I love it, but overhyped as you can clone but its my favorite boost and overdrive pedal which is why I have a klon boost. Colour box is my favorite pedal ever created and when it is paired with a klon, you can hear angels crying

I think that the sound of the Klon is fantastic and like the tube screamer is its own defined thing. But because of the mystery surrounding the Centaur with the gooping and the Russian diod its just escalated in a world thats connected via the web. The players that own them that are in the limelight you can literally just Google their pedal board. Add John Mayers black Centaur and the mysterious Blue one, it just adds to the mythos. Great vid.

I've built a couple of klones from kits. A common mod I've seen is separating the dual gang gain pot, to give more control over the "blend" between clean and dirty signal. What I mean is having 2 separate pots. One for dirty and one fore clean signal. Have you done this? Thoughts?

I have a Silver Pony II kit from BYOC that's exactly like this. Not only does it have separate gain, output, and boost pots, it has the drive and boost circuits on separate footswitches.

Awesome show! Great guest feedback and speculation. I have to say I couldn't hear any difference on my end but being there live and actually playing the rig, and actually feeling the response would be the deciding factor for me. At the moment I was thinking about getting the Boss od 200. The tone match was impressive. Still on the fence though.

Boss OD-20 also has a CENTA-OD drive type. Was a good multi-drive pedal back in the day in the early 2000's.

I’m currently at a world class studio. We’re recording with an early original gold centaur. They had this pedal for well over a decade. It’s a professional tool that’s important to have in such settings. That being said, I got a NU-X for my kid and we a/b compared them. It’s pretty close and can be dialed to perfection with a little bit of eq. A real ‘53 blackguard Tele and a Kendrick amp completes this specific chain, so... aim for the tone in your mind, with the tools that you have and play and have fun! A cool Squire Tele with a good replacement pickup, a decent tube amp and a $69 clone will get you 99.99 % as close to the expensive setup, if you know what are you aiming for while dialing for your sound. At the end of the day, it’s all between your fingers and your ears.

Great episode, well done, how an online show should be made. Sorry I made a comment in the live chat asking why the SickAs and Manticore were not on the table with all the other "clones", they were there in their versions 1, maybe because those versions are with a buffer. Thanks for the great live stream.

So, prior to watching the JHS show, I didn’t know what a Klon Centaur was. Now, I know more than I ever wanted to, but at least I’m positive that I don’t need an original pedal, built by the designer, to get its sound. And THAT is ‘gold’! Ty
