LIVE: Fall of Assad puts Russia's Military Footprint in Syria at Risk | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Syria remains in turmoil as rebels are expanding their control over territories beyond Damascus. The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime is a significant strategic loss for Russia. Recent satellite images show that a number of Russian ships have left key Syrian port of Tartous which remains to be Russia's only overseas military base. It is unclear whether their departure is part of a permanent withdrawal from Tartous. The port helped Russia to project power and monitor NATO forces in the Mediterranean region. Further, Russia has a significant military footprint in Syria including 7,500 troops and two military bases, the other being an air base at Khmeimim which was necessary to support the Assad regime against rebels. The Russian officials are hoping for a deal with rebel group ABU Mohammed al-Golani-led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and discuss the future of Russian deployments. "Everything possible is now being done to get in touch with those involved in ensuring security," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the reporters. If Russian military is forced to leave Syria, they might try to reposition themselves in Libya, though it is presumed that Russia won't be in the same position in the region as they were under Assad's reign.
