"I didn't know if I was going to like it or not, so didn't want to put a lot of money into a van". That is an absolute gem of a statement and makes so much sense. I guess there are folk out there who put a whole lot more into it and then found out it wasn't for them and their losses ended up in multiple thousands, where as you would have pretty much got your money back had you decided it was not for you. Even better that you did enjoy it and saved an absolute mint over the years by stealth camping or camping at the sites you are working at.

Wow great minds think alike I have a very similar minimal set up in my 2006 4wd Toyota sequoia. I use it primarily for kayak fishing trips and off grid camping. The suv already has nice cubby’s/cup holders everywhere. I took the back two rows of seats and I built a platform using a table top I bought off craigslist for $10 and a few 2x4s for legs . I also utilize 3 see through storage bins that slide under the platform for storage which I have access to with out opening any doors. My platform is also on the passenger side like yours . I like that I didn’t have to rip anything out and I can turn it back into a 8 seater vehicle in less than 10 mins. It’s wonderful to have a vehicle like this for traveling as well as the peace of mind knowing you have a safe place on wheels to sleep, eat and get warm in the event of a natural disaster or something happening to your home. I appreciated this video more than you could ever know, I live with my roommate sister who is in bad health, and, I need to be realistic and plan for the future if it comes down to it. Yours and one other video have been the best "no build" van living I've ever seen. Simple, practical, and to the point. And most importantly, aren't ungodly expensive. I roll my eyes and sigh and facepalm at some of these extremely expensive fully built out vans/rv vids I've seen. Good lord, for how much some of these things cost, someone could have just bought their own little plot of land and plopped down a mobile home/rv on it instead. In my small country town, the waiting list for an affordable housing one bedroom apt is several years long. Seeing very complicated looking and expensive wiring setups in some videos has made me feel so alienated before, and I'm sure it makes others feel the same. I'll probably just go with a portable power station from amazon with some solar panels. And use a mix of your video with another I saw. Kudos on the plan of doing several 1 gallon water jugs versus a single huge heavy and unwieldy one. I'll probably do a sleeping camping cot bed on one side with a portapotty and toiletries and storage under it, power bank in one corner, water jugs somewhere, add some storage bins/dressers if possible, and somewhere to put the camping stove and I think I'll be ok. Good point on a minivan being a ton more stealthy and discreet versus a big hulking van. And like you said a minivan would already be insulated versus a bare metal cargo van's back area. Thank you for your comments. Its really important to know what your using the van for, and the type of climate you will use it in. It also important whether you will be putting alot of miles on it. There is no reason why a person has to spend a fortune on a minivan, especially if you are going to convert it. It is not necessary to spend a fortune converting it. Like I said in my video, determine what your budget is and buy a van that you can experiment with. You will find what works for you. In my case I feel I got the conversion right the first time. It's all the little things that take time, and learning how to live in a minivan and get comfotable. What's really important is to get a floor in, and tint the back windows. I would start out with a simple built, you can always add solar panels and power systems latter. People get so involved with a complicated build that takes months to build and alot of money. It can get very discouraging. Good luck with your build.

I like your simple approach - comfortable bed, ability to cook inside. I am maybe 1-2 years or so from full-time van life and figuring out a vehicle - reliability so I can put miles on it to travel, and go boondocking for multiple days, have longevity, yet keep it affordable enough so I won't be out lots of 10's of $1000's if I decide it's not for me after a year. Some comforts so I don't give up too easily. I like the stealth of the minivan and also starting simply for awhile to gauge needs, layout etc.

I want to do this as well. My children (they are grown) do not like the idea of me living "out of a vehicle"... but I absoultely love this idea. I like the idea of the small quiet space since I am getting older, it is very economical, and I do not need a big apartment anymore. You can travel and take your home with you anywhere. I don't see anyone converting an Equinox. Would they be hard to do? Just curious if anyone knows.

I think the newer style caravans with stow and go seating (2008 up) could be adapted well with that extra storage underneath and taller head room I think.

An equinox is definitely smaller than one of these minivans. They are a compact SUV. Also I wouldn't trust the reliability of an equinox, they are infamously bad.

Awesome build/simple van mate! I noticed the butane cooker you're using and wonder if you've heard of Trangia cookers? They are an exceptional cooker that can be used with screw on gas cannisters or isopropyl alcohol/methylated spirits. Definitely look them up or check out reviews and see if it would better suit your needs. My dad bought me my personal Trangia cooker and ive had it and been using it for 24 years. Absolutely essensial bit of kit. I only just recently bought another additional Trangia (the larger version) so my partner and I can cook together, whether it be one person cooking while the other is preparing hot drinks or another part of the meal. Keep up the great videos. More of them please. Like tips and tricks, great camp spots and the like. All the best!!

Trangia is great, but they may overheat sometimes and the big flame will be a big trouble inside the car. It is better to always use them outdoors. I never had this problem myself, but what people are sharing about this possible overheated alcohol stove effect is outright scary. Trangia's original concept is "stormkitchen", they are windproof and great for outdoor use. There were also alcohol stoves on the yachts, but they were more open than the Trangias and i don't know about overheating issues of theirs Thanks for the great video.

You're similar to me. I believe in simplicity and practicality. SOme people want to make their tiny home look pretty, I just want it to be functional. I'd lose the sink with the drain. It's only used occasionally and the bucket or your pot will work well enough. just dump out the water and wipe clean after use. I'd use the bucket for doing #2 with a liner and toilet seat top and when not in use it serves as storage for bulky items like paper towels, TP, and things you want easily on hand.

I'm in the process now of trying to figure out how to organize the inside of my Dodge Caravan camper. You've given me some great Ideas and I thank you soooo much! I took screenshots to save. I can't figure out why your head doesn't touch the ceiling though. I'm 5-9 and can get a crick in my neck from not having room to sit up straight on my bed without the top of my head touching the ceiling. Since the floor in mine goes downhill but my bed is level, I don't have much height on one end to store things under my bed like you seem to be able to do. Also, I'd love to know how you attach your curtains. That's my next project. Thanks so much for your help. I'll look now for more of your videos. joyce.

Thanks for watching. Look at my video again. You will see when I turn the platform over, there are 3 2x4 walls supporting it. Notice the direction the 2x4s go. Those 2x4 walls are the same height. I don't know what year your caravan is but in the older caravan up to 2006 were the same. I don't worry about the bed being level because it never is unless your parked level. As long as those walls are the same, that's what matters. The bottom of my plywood platform is 9.5" from the floor. Tho top of my bed is 14" from the floor the ceiling is 40" from the floor. My head has 3" of clearance from the ceiling.

It's important for me to have enough head room when sitting on my bed because that's my main sitting area also. I'll be sitting on the bed while also doing my paintings that I sell part time. I adore your video! I don't plan to live in my van, just take happy trips and try to learn stealth camping for fun. This is an exciting hobby!

However it seems to need repairs every few months even without me driving it on long trips. I live on a month to month budget and I'm wondering if I should sell it and try to find a mechanically better van, or is it normal to need repairs every 2 or 3 months. I only drive maybe 40 miles a week. I've almost got it ready for camping but I hesitate to go far from home. Any advice, without seeing it? I have a great mechanic and he checks it out with every repair.

very cool, i do the same i have a reg cab tacoma with a high rise shell and just sleep back ther. I love the AC and heater is already ther and you just reach ober and turn in the car. I might look into something like this with a toyota sienna😃

Or become a truck driver and do your loads from 1:00AM to 11:00AM Trust me you safe more in a truck than your own vehicle, i use to live in mine to, when i got into OTR is when i saw real money, if you got alot in ur bank to not be controlled by no one, you can talk to your dispatch at a serious level to get your loads only at the time that you feel like it or want to drive, i use to do my loads at day time and i just couldn’t accept the traffic people and the noise im an owl 🦉 by nature so i told them either give me loads at night or ill find another job and they did.🙂

@@chriscrom3135 I live and travel in a minivan too and you've given me some good ideas. I overdid it on the bed though. I put a big full size memory foam in mine. There isn't much room for anything else so my clothes and stuff stay in bags along the back door I use them as a headboard when I sleep. But I want to try to build collapsible shelves overhead for my stuff. Like, something that attaches to the roof (inside of the van) that I can pull down kind of like an attic door. Do you think that could work? Hope you're having a good day!!

Thanks for watching. It's difficult to attach to the roof. What I suggest is you cut that bed down in size, between 30 to 34 inches. If you saw my video you see I have 4 totes underneath for storage. The bed platform is not hard to make. I'm going to do another video showing how to build the platform. If your living in the van you need to make it more livable.If your mattresses is form you can usually cut it with a big sharp knife. I've done it a couple of times. What I do is measure both sides and snap a chalk line across then cut along the line.

Well, you have a terrific, creative mind. For me, i think it would stress me out to have all that stuff inside that small space. I guess a lot of it was from the cooking. Love the bed and the counter top next to it and the bed doubles as a sitting area. But to make meals on a hot plate propane burner and to have a spice rack, geez, that really is home cooking. But i would chose to forego all that and simply buy affordable premade hot meals at the grocery or economy eateries or use a small microwave oven hooked up to that electrical inverter and buy healthy frozen meals that have everything in it, rather than cook too manually, scratch meals. But its a tremendously wonderful video that helps people with very amazing ideas by you. Best wishes to you. Take care.

Thanks for watching. You are correct with your assessment. I don't cook everything from scratch. I do buy ready made meals from stores. I do cook omelets every morning and heat up water for my instant coffee. I also use the hot water for cleaning, myself and pans. I also heat up ready made things, like canned goods such as instant soup or chili. I also make sandwiches for lunch. I have used a microwave with my inverter but they take alot of power. I may have to get a better Inverter and another battery but I don't want to make things to complicated.

I actually cooked on one of those stoves supported by a plastic cutting board in between the two front seats resting on the centre console. I think you can put it on the shelf.
