There are generations of musicians who will look back on these sessions with the same reverence that we look at things like Bill Evans’ 1961 run at the Village Vanguard. We’re watching history being made, every Monday night.

John Splitoff, vocals 1:38:25 Funmi Ononaiye Delivers Words of Insight for MLK Day 1:40:27 Better Go (Ben Webster; Harry “Sweets” Edison) *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *It’s not enough to love the tradition, we know as jazz, and neglect the pulse for justice, that gave birth to the genre.* The *’spirit to overcome’ lives in the DNA of this music…* And this is precisely why we feel hope, each Monday night, amid the weight of a pandemic: #BlackAmericanMusic 🌏🙌🏼🙌🏾 As we celebrate his legacy, *the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,* bear wisdom for a lifetime. What we know as *‘Love,’* he identified as *“the heartbeat of the moral cosmos.”* *~*~*~*~*~*~ Jazz family, we can not “love” this music, strictly because of the benefit that it affords us. *Love is not transactional . . . It is not merely something that we do.* *Love is something that we ARE.* 🌎♥️🧬 Each week, we unite with some of the hardest working cats whose love shines brightly. *~*~*~*~*~*~ *Emmet Cohen, Russell Hall, and Kyle Poole were joined by tenor saxophonist Ruben Fox,* following his return from the U.K., and welcomed *trumpeter Benny Benack III,* back to the living room stage. Ruben creates *deep human connection through his supreme warmth, gorgeous articulation, & spacious tones.* 🎷🎼 He infuses a ballad with *soulful certainty* & blesses us with a soft-landing after flights of virtuosity. - We hear *shades of the great tenors,* as well as the *elegance* of his original work. *Benny Benack, III, is a warrior of sound* and performs with the same passion that he gifts the music scene. 🎺🎙 His lines are *delivered with meticulous execution* and instill an explosive awareness of how beautifully the music can be -both- played & sung….with *cool regality & savage sensitivity.* *~*~*~*~*~*~ 🎹🎻🥁 The trio excelled with *Kyle Poole’s technical brilliance at the drums,* as he reveals the genius of his gene-Poole. Once again, *Russell Hall’s* energy at the bass is a devastating display of *musical intuition & sophistication* - matched by *Emmet Cohen’s razor focus and meteoric runs at the piano.* 🎵🎶🤺 - The trio was also joined by *special guest vocalist John Splitoff,* who offered a sweet & soulful outpouring of a rhythm & blues classic. 🎤 *Thank you, Emmet, trio, & guests for creating a space to celebrate the beautiful range of the Black American musical tradition…* You inspire us to connect with Dr. King, not out of convenience,…but through our *human* experience. *~*~*~*~*~*~ *Jazz family, may we feel the security to be “the grandest version of ourselves,” and let others live in their expansiveness.* 🙌🏾🙌🏼🌍🔥 *There is enough space in this universe to love and thrive, without extinguishing another’s flame.* *Burn brightly, as you define your own ‘cosmic heartbeat’.*

Thank you Mr. Cohen for doing these concerts! I started watching about a year ago. I'm always in awe at the musicianship and talent of the players you put together for your weekly concerts! The talent and musical joy just oozes out of the TV! Besides the ridiculously good music you produce, I am equally in awe of the good nature, love and respect displayed amongst you and the myriad world class musicians you assemble on the bandstand. Besides the fantastic entertainment, I'd also like to thank you and all the musicians that perform on Emmets Place for inspiring this 55 year old saxophone hobbyist to go to his basement and practice! While I'll never be a world class saxophonist, your presentations help me to latch on to and want to bring the joy and gratitude for music you present in your performances into my own playing. THANK YOU!

Your production values just keep getting better and better. Would love to see a behind the scenes segment and put some faces on Alex and Grant as well as some eyes on the gear. Are those the Earthworks omni piano mics? Sure sounds nice without a ton of leakage.

Outstanding musicianship tonight! I was wracking my brain why the tune "Prayer To The People" (starting around 50:15 - 57:39) sounded so familiar: It's a gently jazzed up salute to Malotte's "The Lord's Prayer" renamed by Clifford Jordan. Exquisitely soulful version played by Ruben, Emmet, Russell, Kyle on MLK day!
