These live auctions are really interesting, it seems like the majority of winning bids are from phone bids. Were there people in the audience that bid and won as well? I guess they aren't just spectators. I'm glad Sothebys is showing their live auctions.

its amazing what these paintings go for because if you saw most of these as prints at Walmart you would certainly scoff at them and call them tacky...

Yes but these are one of a kind paintings, not mass produced lithographs (prints). Sometimes an artist might have a limited edition art print so more people can buy the design but they go for far less. Mass produced prints at Walmart aren't worth much.

it's a disgrace and a shame that the Art institute of Chicago dare deaccessioning and selling an important Balthus painting, there's not a lot of his works out there, the fact that an institution is selling like a vulgar merchant is an infamy - we should boycott this institution - please don't remove this comment as it's not insulting and just stating the facts.

Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington did this also, they built an extension and they then sold artwork to pay for it. They should have sold bonds. I agree with you, art museums shouldn't be selling important works.
