I was in Mitropoli outside the church during the King's funeral. I arrived at 06:00 before the sun was even up. Let me tell you, the amount of people waiting to see him was staggering. It took hours to get through the line to pay my final respects. And the amount of love and affection shown by the many thousands who gathered for the King's funeral afterward was overwhelming. When Prince Pavlos spoke over his father's casket, there was more emotion than I had ever seen in such a large crowd. Everyone cheered at the end of his speech. Many cried. And as they carried the King out of the Cathedral, the entire square united in singing the National Anthem one last time for His Majesty. After the King was carried away, the crowd began to chant Crowned-Prince Pavlos' name. People followed the procession all the way to Tatoi where the finally laid His Majesty to rest. I lived through something incredible that day, and emotions I felt and saw will stay with me forever. Rest in Peace, my King.

Seen a few docs were he was interviewed and me being Danish having seen him and his wife at officials gatherings, seemed like a very friendly and humorous man. A day of sorrow for Greece, he would have been a great king. He deserved a state funeral, he had a good soul!😮💨
@leykimayri Жыл бұрын
Actually he wasn’t a good king, his actions (being influenced by his mother and her loyal counsellors) led to a political turmoil for two years which ended up in the military junta in Greece. Being a good person does NOT mean that you are also a good leader. There was not the possibility to have a state funeral because he wasn’t a Greek citizenship. He lost it (was taken from him) and in order to get it back there were some things he had to accept, including the fact that he denies any right to any Greek throne for ever. Of course he didn’t want to sign anything like that or to get himself a surname (as all the Greek citizens have, another important term he had to accept), so he never got back his Greek citizenship. Thus there could be no state funeral for him.

As an American, I agree with Simon Barnow. I believe that the Greeks commenting show a lack of understanding. Constantine was caught in a very complicated situation. There were coups planned all around Constantine, he more or less had to back one group or the other. He was trying to achieve his ultimate goal, of stopping Greece from becoming a communist dictatorship. He was never planning to be a despotic ruler. He stood for the idea of a parliamentary monarchy, in the style of Denmark, Belgium, England, and many other countries. He was trying to stop Greece from becoming a satellite of Russian cmmunism. He loved his country.
@leykimayri Жыл бұрын
@@gijsbertlc You need to study the Greek history in order to understand why. First of all the royals were NEVER chosen by the Greeks, citizens or politicians. They were chosen by the British and French governments for us and they were FORCED ON US. Secondly and more importantly, those royals were responsible for some of the most disastrous moments in the Greek history. In a few words. The first king, Otto was kicked out, basically he and his wife couldn’t produce heirs, so king George arrived in Greece in 1863 (grandfather of Constantine the second who was buried today). King George’s son, named king Constantin the first is responsible for the “national division” since he directly opposed the Greek prime minister Venizelos dividing Greeks into two during WW1 and the period after which lead to the biggest disaster of modern Greece in 1922 and the Asia Minor catastrophe. His son, is responsible for the dictatorship in 1935 and after WW2 basically people were forced to vote for his return which led to a civil war (the war would have happened even without his return but people connected him to that). He didn’t have any children so the throne went to his uncle, brother of Constantin the first, who, although didn’t do something to seriously hurt the country, had a wife that people hated, since she wanted to basically control and rule and spend whenever and however much she wanted. When her son became a king in 1964 he was only 24 and she started controlling him telling him what to do, so basically he followed her orders to drive away a PM and his government who had won the elections with an amazing 53% and for two years was trying to put a royal dictatorship on power without success, until a military dictatorship managed to gain power and take the leadership of the country for 7 years, which led to another catastrophe, this time in Cyprus when Turkey invaded and separated by force the island into two. There are tons of details which I have not mentioned of course and it doesn’t mean that all the faults lie with the royals. However much of the responsibilities are because of them and things would have been different if they hadn’t been around. (Things could have been better or worse we don’t know that, however the way things played led to many disasters which harmed millions of Greeks).

King Constantine was a true Greek patriot. He loved Greece and the Greek people with all his heart and soul. Many Greeks are really fond of him but the leftists don't like him, of course. There were thousands of people this morning waiting to pay their respects to him but the government gave only about 4 hours to the people to do that, so only just a few thousands of people had the chance. Many other thousands were waiting patiently to pay their respects to the King but the time was not enough, unfortunately. The Greek government took that timid and unfair decision about Constantine not to have a state funeral just out of fear of backlash from the leftists. That was really sad and unjust. King Constantine's personality was really great, he was really kind and simple in his ways, kind-hearted and generous and he would have been a great king for sure if he had the chance, but he was unlucky, unfortunately. He ascended the throne in a very young age, in difficult times for Greece and he was really trying always to do the right thing but when you are in a turmoil this is not easy. He was an Olympic gold medalist. He won for Greece the gold medal in sailing at the 1960 Olympic games in Rome. He was a really wonderful family man and a great father and he raised his children with a lot of love, giving them all the great values and ideals. We will always remember him with love here in Greece, the country where he was born and died, the country he loved so much. RIP King Constantine II.👑👑

DONT SPREAD LIES. 70% of Greeks voted AGAINST his return, are you saying that 70% of Greeks are leftist? Do you forget the fact that it was Karamanlis and his right wing party basically that kicked him out, not any leftist party instead? The vast majority of Greeks did NOT give a damn for him. Yes he was a good person but he was a LOUSY leader following the orders of his dear mommy leading the country into the military junta. Give us a break here, yes there are people in Greece who favor his return, but there are also Greeks who have voted for golden dawn as well, so there you have it, idiots can be found everywhere

@@c.a.r.i7785 Kings and communists are not compatible, my friend. Lions and hyenas. And after the end of the second world war there was in Greece a horrible and devastating civil war between the regular army of the Greek government and the communists rebels who wanted to establish a communist regime in Greece. King Paul, father of King Constantine was the head of the state and the head of the national army at that period.
@leykimayri Жыл бұрын
@@c.a.r.i7785 The kings in Greece, during the 20th century, always brought division and schisms in the society. Not only between the royalists and communists, but also between royalists and liberals, royalists and socialists. It’s not just the leftist who didn’t want a state funeral, but also the VAST MAJORITY of the Greek society. More than 10 million people live in Greece, 3-4 thousands went to his funeral. If the king was so popular as some brainless jerks claim, millions of Greeks would have gone to the cathedral trying to see him, and with so many foreign kings and royals arriving and foreign media covering the funeral everybody would know. Less important things were organised in less time attracting hundreds of thousands of Greeks resisting in the streets, while the planning of the funeral was known for at least 3 days in advance. Also look at the comments of the videos in KZbin, if the deseased was so popular the videos would have had already millions of views and thousands of comments. They don’t, Greeks just don’t care, not even to write anything against him anymore. They just just indifferent, they have more serious problems to deal with. And because the economy is still bad, paying from their taxed incomes the funeral of someone so unpopular, would have actually led to people protesting against that.

c.a.ri The monarchy has conservative values the exact opposite of the leftist and communist values. You saw the beautiful family of the late king. All class and full of respect. The way Prince Pavlos greeted the mourners shows good old fashioned manners. The left and communists ousted King Constantine II. They exiled him even though he was born and bred in greece. He served in the greek armed forces, won the first olympic gold medal for greece in the modern olympics, and brought in investment and tourism to greece which every single govt has destroyed since. A monarchy in greece will bring back stability, honesty, humility, govt for the people and above all out greek orthodoxy. His ancestors were german but he was and still is a HELLENE!!!

Why can't we rest in peace when where alive? I am sure the King had a good life . People who struggle with poverty ,illnesses , and injustice , can use this line "rest in peace" . Death is the end of ones tormenting struggles . Life is not easy for many people.

A good king does NOT bring his country in a political turmoil for two years losing every control and letting a few colonels get control of his country and then legitimise their illegal coup and illegal government while he still gets paid 7 million drachmas annually (around 2 million dollars annually today’s money) during the whole 7 years the junta ruled. Oh wait, I forgot you wrote you are not a royalist, looool 😂😂😂😂
@RadRat1138 Жыл бұрын
@@leykimayri That's just it: he didn't bring his country to ruin. He tried to save it from authoritarianism. They took advantage of his extreem youth. Had he just went along with the Junta then I'd say "you're correct." But you're not correct lol

@@RadRat1138 Hey moron, he made the Papandreou government resign and he tried to appoint a government under HIS control, the Apostates, and when he failed he kept on trying for two years, bringing a political CHAOS in Greece until the coup d’etat of 1967. That is the DEFINITION OF TRYING TO GET AN AUTHORITARIAN REGIME INTO POWER, m0r0n!!!

He was a really good man and a great king but he was unlucky, unfortunately. He ascended the throne at a very young age and he was always trying to do the best but there was a political turmoil in Greece at that time. So, it was not easy for him. The point is he loved Greece and the Greek people with all his heart and soul and we will remember him with love always.

@@leykimayri You wish but this not what happened. This is a VERY BIG LIE. What do you know? You are in the other side of he world. I was there and there were thousands of people waiting and hundreds of people were constantly coming from allover Greece. At the first 2 hours only, five thousand people paid their respects to the King ACCORDING TO THE GREEK POLICE (they said that on the TV news) and the line of people waiting was getting longer and longer. And it was Monday morning. Most of the people were working and couldn't leave their jobs. You can imagine what would happen if it was Saturday or Sunday. This the truth. Anyone has the right to like or not like the King but no one has the right to spread lies he/she just imagined. Ιf the government had the guts to let all the people who wanted to pay their respects to the King, to be able to actually do so, you'd see what would happen. I saw real sorrow and disappointment in the people's faces who couldn't pay their respects just because the time was not enough. But they said nothing. They didn't protest. They were all decent, good people who didn't want to make any trouble. They just left. Shame on the Greek government for this. They could be a little bit more fair and brave. Only a few members of the government and the government party were brave enough to declare their objection to the timid government decision.

He was honoured more than he deserved for a deposed king, 70% of people voted against him. Had he died during the ‘80s or if he had tried to interfere and return, the Greeks wouldn’t even let him get buried in Greece.

@Andries Sibarani You are so right. And many thousands of people were patiently waiting to pay their respects to the King but they didn't have the chance to do it because the timid Greek government gave only 4 hours to the public to pay their respects and that time was not enough, of course. At the first 2 hours only, five thousand people paid their respects to the King according to the Greek police and many people were coming constantly all the time from allover the country, so the line of people waiting was getting longer and longer. And it was Monday morning. Most of the people were working and couldn't leave their jobs. You can imagine what would happen if it was Saturday or Sunday. The Greek government is really unforgivable for this. I mean OK, there are the leftists haters but what they could do? Anyway, that's what happened.

A great man in the face of adversity and betrayal. Polished, well-spoken, a true monarch in every sense of the word. He will be missed by those who knew him, those who knew of him and those who loved him. Yet, in his death the Greek government, fearing a resurgence of monarchist fervor, denied wholeheartedly the simple request for a lying in state until public opinion forced them to backtrack. The man did nothing to harm Greece yet most of the Greek political establishment did much to harm him even in death. May God watch over his Devoted Servant Constantine and may he be admitted triumphantly into Heaven. Requiescat in Pace Your Most Gracious Majesty. You Shall NOT be forgotten. Amen.
