They were the saluting the colours. Because across the world, colours or in french (drapeau) are seen to be holy or sacred and they are presented by the Head of State. So its the sacres symbol of a regiment, hence due respect should be given. Just like how the British Royal Family will give a headbow (or salute in uniform) if they pass the colours.

Actually no, it is the royal flag of the family of Luxembourg and the official coat of arms of the city of luxembourg, a few years ago it was made the secondary national flag but only recognized as such in Luxembourg.

The music of the opening hymn is the same music as the Israeli national anthem, "Hatikvah." That melody was composed in 16th-century Italy, so it's long since in the public domain. Someone must have written Catholic lyrics and set them to the same music.

Not an ex-Monarch...deceased Monarch. He didn't abdicate.

Yes he did in favor of his son Henri on October 7, 2000. His mother before him, Grand Duchess Charlotte abdicated in favor him in 1964. Unlike the UK, Luxembourg sees abdication as more kin to Retirement as opposed to shirking your duties. Even in extreme cases when it is clear the monarch is unfit to serve, they'll appoint a Regent , often the next in line to serve in the monarch's place rather than see an abdication. As far as the law goes, the Sovereign is still the Sovereign de jure but as far as de facto goes, the Regent is basically the Sovereign in all but name. That happened with King George III. The future George IV served as Regent as de facto King in all but name. George III's death only made official what was already the case.
