From Wikipedia. The Halo theme was composed by two people, Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori. O'Donnell drew inspiration from his studies on Middle Ages music and decided to incorporate Gregorian chant into the theme, which has since become a staple of the Halo series in its various forms. Music is a universal language, it does not matter were you are from, you will understand the beauty of this song.

It's interesting how something can transcent from what it originally was meant to be into something quite different. Others already pointed out how pretty much everyone in the audience walked home without even the slightest clue that they've just listened to what was written as soundtrack to a quite violent video game. And in this location and context, this stopped being a theme song for a game and became something quite different and beautiful. Cool.
