LIVE: Kia K5 EX vs. Kia K5 GT-Line: An in-depth look at the differences.

The Kia K5 has an LX model at the bottom of the lineup, and a GT model at the top. In the middle there is a Kia K5 EX and a Kia K5 GT-Line, they share an engine and transmission, have the same wheels and tires (although they have different colour wheels) and are very similar inside. Hi Lisa, I literally asked that EXACT question when we were being trained on this car. I clarified by wording my question as follows: "So ALL Kia K5's will be getting wireless Android Auto, but the versions with the smaller screen will have it from launch, while the larger screen models will receive it through a future software update?" and they answered "Yes" so hopefully that gives you some assurances.

How's the LX vs EX in Canada... I see alot of videos of 2022 LX that don't seem to have blindspot monitoring, leather steering wheel, heated wheel and seats, keyless entry (button on the door handles) yet on the seem to be standard on LX brochure. Is there a side by side of those 2 models? Thx

In Canada, all K5's are AWD except for the very top trim, the GT.

Oh man... tha'ts such a tough question. I already own a 2020 Kia Soul EV, and that's a great car, but I can see myself in a 2021 Kia Sorento with the turbo engine and panoramic sunroof. That's an awesome vehicle. I LOVE the new K5, and the GT-Line has the tech that I'm looking for. If I just wanted a really nice inexpensive car, the new Kia Rio has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and that's a GREAT simple car. The Stinger performs great, and I love driving that car. The Forte5 GT is another car that puts a big smile on my face... It's just so hard to choose one. It would depend on what I'm needing a vehicle for. The Seltos would be a perfect car for my wife if we didn't have the Soul EV... I'm just a huge fan of cars in general, so I can see the good in each one, and have a use-case for each one.

@@BrantfordKia I love the sorento but I don’t have a family yet. I live in NY so the K5 , seltos and the forte would be great for me. Great gas miles. By my absolute favorite is the stinger. Just a little out of my price range. Unless I can get the price of that GT-Line down. You think the 2021 models will be marked down with the incoming 2022 models? I wish Kia made a 2 door coup sports car. That car would be sick !

The Kia K5 GT-Line is far more expensive than my Kia Seltos EX Premium AWD - stick with the Seltos. But I do like the extra upgraded Software on K5 GT-Line. Will this migrate eventually to the Seltos EX Premium AWD?

The K5 is a step up in price, I agree. I don't know if Kia will move these software updates to future vehicles. As it sits now, the 10.25" screen in your car has features that the Telluride does not have at any trim level. I'd like to see Kia make updates available to cars after they're purchased. I think the ability to add a few features for a year or two would be great. We do have mapping updates, but I have yet to see us do full operating system updates, which I personally think should be something that Kia should look into. The same way as your phone gets software updates that add features, it would be nice to see our cars do the same.

When UVO was first introduced, it was available at no charge for 5 years. That's nearly 2 years ago now, so more recently Kia Canada moved the free period to 3 years on the purchase of a new vehicle. Kia Canada has not released pricing on UVO intelligence yet, and to be fair to them, they do have some time to do that. It's possible that UVO is still being improved and there may be features added between now and when they need to price it, so I can understand them not pricing it until they have settled on which features to charge for, and I can imagine that it would be difficult to price a product 2 to 3 years in advance.

Ambient lighting is designed to be seen only at night. You will not see it during the daytime. In Canada, I don't believe either of the vehicles in the video have ambient lighting.

In Canada (where we film) the GT Line is AWD only, and some of the differences that you see in this video have to do with differences between Canadian and American models.

If you're American, you may not have that feature. We're based in Canada, and that's why we sometimes have a few different features than you.

Pretty sure in the US, the GT line does not come with that. My K5 EX I just bought in US has all of the upgrades that the Canada GT line has. Kinda weird. Its flip flopped out here. And I have rear vents. Only things my car doesnt have that the Canada GT line does have is the upgraded rear view mirror, heated back seats, auto folding mirrors and the AWD obviously. Love this car!

Only the GT has the BOSE system, but I have to admit, the standard system is one of our best, non-branded systems. It's pretty good.

Yeah, these have a more premium feel than the Seltos, but they also have a more premium price. The Optima and Optima PHEV are not in production anymore.

Imo they should only have 2 trims for the stinger a 2.5t limited and a 3.3t limited. Drop the regular gt. I was really hoping for awd on the 2.5t k5. Makes my decision harder on deciding what I'd get.

When we had the 4 cylinder Kia Stinger it was not a big seller, while the GT was. The reason that we have the cars we do in the Stinger lineup is entirely driven by sales numbers. I understand what you're saying about wanting AWD on the K5 GT, but I understand their reasoning. They wanted the K5 to be fast enough to take on the Camry's big engine, and adding AWD would take the 0-60 time over the Camry's, while leaving it FWD makes the car faster than the Camry. The K5 is a mid-sized sedan designed to be a great all round car, while the Stinger is performance first. The only AWD systems that Kia has for FWD platforms are all weather traction enhancers, not like the Stinger's RWD platform AWD system which is a performance enhancer that works great on the track. Finally, adding AWD to the K5 GT would push it too close in price to a Stinger GT which is a car that sells decently for us.

@@BrantfordKia I get what you're saying on the 2.0 stinger but that thing was bland and didn't have options really. The 2.5t has 304hp and 311 torque. You put that as an option with a limited package and people would easily buy it. I'd take it over the 3.3t because it's lighter and has pretty good gas mileage as well. I understand what you're saying on the k5 gt but I'm sure most people would take the sap in 0-60 for better traction.

As consumers, I think we'd be happy to see both on a dealer lot. I'm not sure if dealers feel the same way, but dealers like to sell cars, and it would be cool to have two performance AWD vehicles with very different characters available to customers. It's an interesting choice for sure, and I want to be clear, I think the K5 GT is an EXCELLENT car, but I think the AWD would have more broad appeal.

There are a lot of reasons floating around. The two that stand out are that the AWD systems that Kia makes for Front Wheel Drive based vehicles is a poor weather traction system, and will not actually enhance performance. Without AWD the car will be quicker from 0-60 and will have better handling with reduced weight. The other reason is that by the time you add AWD to the GT, you're getting very close in price to the GT Limited Stinger and they want a little bit of separation of price between those two vehicles. Also, keep in mind that Optima SX buyers had FWD vehicles and the GT basically replaces that car, it's a more powerful, better handling version of the Optima SX, not a Stinger type of performance vehicle.

@@bobbymanser5549 That's a test that we're going to try to perform this winter. AWD will help with accelerating but will offer no benefit to stopping, and limited benefit to steering. Winter tires on a front wheel drive vehicle will always outperform an equal AWD vehicle in snow, or even simply on cold pavement when it comes to braking. So I recommend winter tires on all vehicles, however putting them on an AWD vehicle works the best in every condition.

But I also lean towards safety over performance so I may go the gt-line route. At the end of the day both are great options, both look amazing to drive! The wheel speed sensors are used for a lot of safety features, and if you give them just a little bit of traction, they'll perform better than older vehicles. So you can expect good winter performance with modern winter tires.

That's fair, but keep in mind, we're a dealership. We started doing these videos for our local market and have gained a global reach. For the people who actually buy cars from us (which is how I get paid) they can come in and test drive the car anytime. Having said that, we're always looking at ways to improve. We've done test drive videos in the past, but they didn't move the needle too far when it comes to bringing in buyers.
