I got in a car accident when this song was out and playing on the radio. My car flipped and ended upside down. I was stunned, hanging upside down from the seat-belt, and all I could hear was this song blaring from the speakers. Lightning Crashes, indeed. I forgot to mention that as the album was being wrapped up, Barbara Lewis, a long time friend of the band was killed by a driver fleeing from the Police (due to an armed robbery). She was only 19. They dedicated the song to her and both her family and the band seem to indicate that her story at this time completely encapsulates the song. She was an organ donor. Due to that, many lives were saved and her story continued.

I always felt that he was talking about reincarnation in this song. "I can feel it coming back again", referring to the life force coming back in the form of a beautiful new human life. This song was written by Ed Kowalczyk (lead singer) in his brother's room. He had a friend, Barb, that passed away from a car crash with a drunk driver/fleeing armed robber. Barb had donated multiple organs. This caused Ed to think about the circle of life and the symbolic "reincarnation" of Barb. "Lightning crashes, an old mother dies Her intentions fall to the floor The angel closes her eyes The confusion that was hers Belongs now to the baby down the hall" Barb's confusion and pale blue eyes are now seen in the newborn baby. This is symbolic of the donation of organs. In a way he's really onto something. Our fears, doubts, hopes, dreams, struggles, debts, expectations, etc ...it all becomes a part of the next generation. We're giving this world to the youth. Total strangers are impacted from the same life experiences as we have. We're all connected and stay connected.

Just to clarify it wasn't the mother giving birth who died it was an old mother down the hall. It represents the balance in all things. As one dies one is born. The moment life begins is the moment life ends. The universe has a harmonious rhythm about it and everything is in perfect balance even if we can't see it.

I’m in my 70s and many of us mothers in Alaska at least 90% of us gave birth at home, sadly we have lost many wonderful women during what should’ve been the most beautiful times greeting our blessed new spirit to be born only to lose the blessed spirit that gave life, truly gave her life for the child. The women of our communities and the fathers of our children always surrounded the husband/father who would now face this world without her. We were community back then and made sure he and his children would never want for anything, we women would make sure the child has the love of our hearts as our husbands helped their father grieve as he had to move forward into fatherhood alone.
