Join Post reporters as President Biden delivers the 2024 State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on March 7. The speech - his fourth time addressing a joint session - comes as Biden faces scrutiny for his handling of the Israel-Gaza war and immigration and concerns about his age ahead of the 2024 election.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), alongside Vice President Harris, will preside over the address. The parents of detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will be in attendance, as will Elizabeth Carr, the first person born by in vitro fertilization, or IVF, in 1981. Shortly after Biden’s address, Sen. Katie Boyd Britt (Ala.) will give the Republican response.
Libby Casey and Rhonda Colvin anchor live coverage from inside the Capitol, while James Hohmann and JM Rieger provide analysis from The Washington Post newsroom. Of course we all wanted out of Afghanistan but the exit was not safe at all and it undid 20 years of resources spent and sacrifices made by people like that Marine. Trump initiated the withdrawal when he brokered a deal with the Taliban directly and excluded the Afghan government from the negotiating table. It was shortsighted. He did this for clout so he could say he ended the war. We abandoned those people. And then once the wheels were in motion the Biden administration went through with the hasty withdrawal and woah what do you know, the Taliban immediately attacked and took over. And just like that 13 troops died along with countless civilians, and now generations of Afghan women have lost their rights to safety, education and dignity. Personally, I'm sick of our invasive foreign policy, but you can't just make a giant mess and then dip. We won't be safe in a world where we allow human rights and our credibility on the global stage to slip away for the sake of petty politics.
