What a wonderful start to the July Festival! Schubert's symphonies are gorgeous, the playing here was superb, and the recording was very good too. There were lovely moments throughout both symphonies in this ravishing performance, and it was made more powerful by the excellent audio that made so many instruments sound clear. The last few minutes of the Unfinished is a favorite of mine, and it was heart stopping here from 1:03:15 or so, especially the final fade at the very end. In addition to the divine music, the camera did a great job panning to emphasize the instruments leading at any one time. The violins were beautiful, moving in such slow motion in quiet yet emotional passages. And then beauty moved from one wind instrument to another as each took a turn to shine both with lovely melodies and focus from the camera. I especially noticed one of the flutes, as she was also the flutist in symphony 5, where she really stood out, at least to my ear. At the very start, at 7:36 or so, the camera focuses on her and the excellent audio really brings out that relatively quiet instrument, and then we quickly get another burst of flute magic around 7:52, and so it goes throughout most of the symphony 5. An especially gorgeous moment is around 15:02 in the Andante, where the flute rings out. While I noticed the flute especially, the whole orchestra made this symphony gorgeous. You made my Sunday here in New York so nice; thank you and now I am really excited for the rest of the July Festival. 🤩

Thank you for the pleasing excitement of Schubert's not played often enough symphonic music..
