If he put a buttstock on the 5.56 handgun ( the balck AR STYLE HANDGUN THAT THE OFFICER CALLED A RIFLE BUT IT'S ACTUALLY NOT) then it would be a SBR ( Short Barrel Rifle) since the barrel was less than 16 inches. It is not illegal to own a SBR. Also he can put a sig brace on the 5.56 handgun and it be completely legal as well.

They get called pistols because the barrel length would be too short for them to be considered rifles. Taking off the “brace” would be a safe thing to do so he wouldn’t get into trouble for shouldering the weapon.

“It’s clearly a rifle, he just took the buttstock off” From what I understand, as long as the AR did not exceed a barrel length of 16”, an overall length of 32”, is capable of being fired one-handed and is not capable of being fired from the shoulder, then it is legally considered a pistol. Having a buffer tube is necessary for the AR to function, and you are never supposed to fire it from the shoulder with or without a stock. If it did have a stock, as the officer implied that it should, then the owner of it would be breaking the law as he would be in possession of an SBR (short barreled rifle) without the required tax stamp from the ATF. So no - as long as the AR isn’t too long, every weapon in this “arsenal” was, in fact, a pistol.
