How are you coming along with sewing down your stash? I haven't bought fabric in 2 yrs, but last Oct a friend with 2 full sewing rms died. Her hubby decided the fabrics, tools, etc should go to her quilting buddies. Yesterday I got the first 3 boxes. Each box has about 17 meters and panels and there were also 2 large kits. I'm going to monogram her name into each quilt I make from her stash.

This is the first year of Michigan Shop Hop. My sister and I have been hopping to all the shops in our area; South East Area which is right across from Windsor, Ontario! We found that all of the specialty fabrics were gone by day three. So if you’re planning on going next year make sure you make a plan ahead of time! It’s so fun. We’ve met a couples and have met up with them at several different shops! Amazing friendships are being made!

I’ve always been told to measure from the middle of each pair of sides. Allow for an “ops” factor-you can always cut off an inch or two of extra. Good luck, and bravo for finishing a project.

One identifiable issue with lower grade quilting fabrics is how well the threads stay intact when working with the fabric. Low quality fabrics will fray, and you'll have a lot more issues along the seams/edges. (But this is not a hard rule, just a general guideline).

I’m prepping -or, rather I’ll be cleaning up after my prepping🤣-for a Quilt Retreat that I’m going to in PA on Monday, but I’m hoping to join the Stitch N’ Chat on Sunday! Thanks for another great Q & A. Free patterns can be found on Name Brand Fabric Designers websites-Moda, Riley Blake, etc and KZbinrs. Going through Quilt books/magazines is a Great idea to relieve stress to get back into the quilting mode. Thanks. I love Emma for Hexagons patterns. She is so creative. In Florida there were 75 shops that participated in Shop Hop, this year. Have a Great weekend Karen. Love your KZbins.

When you have lost your SewJo try easy small projects. For example make mug rugs, placemats, table runners / toppers. I made one fabric in the mug rug and then did an easy applique or even running stitch embroidery. Useful items and don't have to be perfect. I had serious burnout which has taken three years until I felt normal.

I agree...when you have a big burnout, it take 2-5 years to feel like your old self

On the question about prewashing, if you starch your fabric before cutting, it will preshrink it so that it matches your prewashed fabric. I am finding I get less fraying and more accuracy, whether cutting with rotary cutter or die cutter, when I starch first so I am leaning in that direction. My biggest challenge is scraps. I don’t starch until I am ready to use fabric, so yardage isn’t an issue, but I have a lot of scraps from before I started starching, and a lot of them are already cut into strips, squares, or hst components. As I have starched fabrics to add, I am mixing with impunity. That may come back to haunt me…

I found my 1" bindings last a lot longer than a super tight 1/2" one. Takes 4 1/2" of fabric tho. I use 1 1/2 yds for a queen size. Cotton quality, hold it up to the light, can you see the light fixture thru it? It's low quality. Hold up a batik... it comes down to the width (denier) of the woven threads AND how many threads per inch. Sheets specify this, as Egyptian cotton is 600 threads per inch. Batiks are about 180. Cheaper fabric is about 100 but using very skinny threads.

In Australia quilting fabrics are now up to $36-37/mtr!! Especially fabric by the more well known designers eg. Tulla Pink, Anna Maria Horner, Alison Glass, Edita Sytar….etc, etc. Makes making a quilt a fairly expensive process if you choose these latest collection fabrics. I’m fairly budget conscious so tend to shop for less expensive fabrics, or wait for ‘sales’.

@@JustGetitDoneQuilts They only seem to offer a discount if you buy 1 metre or more. Otherwise fabrics such as Maria Horner & Tilda are $8.95 & $13.95/25cm!

Fabric prices in The Netherlands: €22 per metre = €19.80 per yard. In US $ that is 21.45 a yard; in Can $ it's 23.44 a yard. So very expensive here. Probably due to the fact that everything is imported here from Us, UK and Japan etc.

Piecing, not piercing. You use thin cardboard shapes, attach fabrics to them with glue or thread temporarily and then attach them to each other by hand to create designs
